There are two factors that lead to the viewers like/dislike a reel character.

One is the actor who plays the role and the other the charecterisation.

The reel Maham Anga was hated of course but nobody disliked watching Ashwini on the screen.

But the actor playing Salim is very ordinary. He is an average looker hardly like the son of the dashing Rajat and gorgeous Paridhi. Discussing actors is probably not allowed but this actor's acting is too medicore and he has a pathetic smile. As such nothing impressive.

Coming to the character he is so blinkered and effervescent that he alows himself to be influenced by all esp Ruqaiya . There is no strength and firmness. He never sees the other person's pov. He is so swayed by his emotions that he never pauses to think that another angle might be present. All smarts and no feelings is not good. But all feelings and no thinking is worse.

Salim and everyone else unhappy with Jalal's decision can criticise him but did any one have a better idea that would not hurt anyone's dil? No. What did Salim expect? That Jalal sticks to his decision and shah shahs him and leaves the praja to forgo haj? Either his mother has to be forced to convert or the praja go to hell or inspite of being currently weak they force a war on Shah-i-Iran and lose the lives and livelihoods of multitudes, but his becoming Shah Shah was now suddenly a must as he wanted to make his sweetheart MEH?

He reserves the right to refuse Waliahad Taj as and when it pleases him and wants to be made Shah Shah if it pleases him again. HE can switch his intentions if it pleases him, but the Shahenshah cannot. Wasn't the Shahenshah insulted when he refused the Waliahad Taj? His dad's feelings don't matter at all, but his and his alone does. This all about I, me, myself, my feelings, my Anar, my wish, me, my, I is what makes Salim (reel) deplorable.

He is just as Jo was in the grina days. Blinkered and fussy on self feelings alone without even a tiny consideration to the other person's thinking and feelings. Being upset or angry is natural. But Salim makes no attempt to understand Jalal's pov even when Jalal comes personally to explain.

Salim is pathetic. (Ofcourse the reel one. The real Salim inspite of his differences with his father, had his own pluses. His interest in sciences and his sense of justice though emotional again, is impressive in some angles. Also it is very tough to be the son of a very very famous father. Comparisons are inevitable. But he didn't come a cropper. He carved a niche for himself in Mughal History)

Sandhya

Well written 😊 Esp lines in bold are valid points.

Why drag in Jodha here? That's an old issue with nothing to do with current track.

Radhika,

Finally, posting my views now...
I only want to tell the following thing in short about REEL Salim's character not looks..

Utter Disregard for his father. No matter what, a son should NOT go to the extent of shouting in front of his father. Or, calling his marriage with his mother "Najayez". Not only this, he said the same to his mother today. He refers her mother by her names and titles but calls Ruqs who fed him Afeem as his Ammi Jaan. Brain is something which has NOT been planted while writing the character. Right from childhood, his character is written horribly. Remember, he spoke a lie and got Salima Begum in trouble for the afeeming case. A person who knows i am NO GOOD EITHER and is a lier too, keeps raising his fingers on others. His problem is that, he lives for HIMself , thinks for HIMself , professes right and wrong as per his convenience. First he wanted to get the Wali-Ahad title for his aawam's khidmat, and now he wants it for Anarkali. Has he gone bonkers when he repeatedly said i want the Shah Shah Khitaab for making Anar the next MEH.! Doesn't he know what non-sense he is speaking about.

My lament is more when i compare him with the REAL one. Though, he rebelled, BUT NEVER he opened his mouth in front of his father. Infact, he had no choice , he could not open his mouth. He respected his mother and put her next to God. Here he is opposite, he disrespects his father and his conduct towards his mother is just opposite of what it was..

This Salim of JA is no where close to that..

Abhay

Thanks for sharing your views. 😊

@Bold: Agree totally. I cannot add anything more to these points 👏

But I give you the award for the best post on this thread for just one sentence:

Brain is something which has NOT been planted while writing the character.

I am still 🤣 reading this. But seriously, what can you expect from these CVs ?

THis oscillating pendulum behavior of the CVs is good in a way - if they want, they can change Salim overnight and make him more likable, without needing to explain the change.

VERY TRUE RADHIKA

THE SCENES WHEN JODHA DIES AND WAS REVIVED WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD POINT TO SHOW THAT SALIM REALLY CARED FOR JODHA AND THAT HE WAS DISTRAUGHT TO HEAR/SEE HER SICK

THAT SITUATION WAS APT FOR MOTHER SON LONG AWAITED BONDING. AND ONCE JODHA AND SALIM BONDING WAS IN PLACE JALAL SALIM MUS COULD HAVE BEEN REDUCED

BUT WHAT WE GOT INSTEAD WAS ONE DIALOGUE WHERE SALIM TELLS JO HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT HER - IT WAS SO BLAND AND LACKING IN ANY SORT OF EMOTIONS, THAT IT SEEMED TO ME LIKE HE WAS TALKING ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE, AND NOT ABOUT HIS OWN MOTHER BEING SICK. FRANKLY I WONDER WHY THE CVS EVEN BOTHERED WIT THAT DIALOGUE AT ALL

Most of the points you have raised have been covered in the summary post by Sabdabhala above. 😊

But you have raised a few additional points, which are wonderful.

1. People were prejudiced against Salim even before his entry because they didn't want the leap.

2. Comparison with Rajat. This was inevitable and on this forum, at least, it is rare for any actor to be considered as good as, if not better than, Rajat. The actor playing Salim had no chance at all of making a mark opposite Rajat.

If the actor is to be replaced, it would be quite difficult for the PH to find someone who can match upto Rajat in looks and acting.

WELL RADHIKA AND SUGANYA

I FEEL WHAT YOU HAVE SAID IS ONLY PARTIALLY TRUE.

MAY BE WE ALL WERE A LITTLE NEGATIVE ABOUT THE LEAP, AT LEAST THE FIRST ONE WHERE SALIM EMERGES AS A NINE YEAR OLD, BUT TRUST ME, IF THE CVS HAD GIVEN A GOOD CHARACTERIZATION TO THE KID SALIM (LIKE THE START, WHEN HE RESCUES THE INJURED BIRD), WE WOULD HAVE WELCOMES HIM WITH OPEN ARMS

IF HE HAD BEEN SHOWN AS JODHA AND JALAL'S LOVING SON, WIOUT THE INFLUENCES OF THE AFEEMING RUKS, ALL OF US WOULD HAVE INSTANTLY DEVELOPED A BOND WITH HIM. SPECIALLY WHEN THE KID PLAYING THE CHARACTER WAS SO SWEET AND ACTED WELL. ALL THIS NEGATIVITY BY THE CVS MADE US PUT OFF WITH THE CHARACTER.

ALSO THE INTRODCUTION OF ANAR SO SOON WAS ALSO A BIG REASON FOR THE OUT OFF. INCH BY INCH CVS STARTED PULLING OFF JODHA AND JALAL AND REPLACED THEN WI NEGATIVE CHARACTERS, LIKE RUKS AND LIKE SALIM WHO HATED HIS PARENTS

FINALLY WEN ADULT SALIM APPEARED, WE STILL HAD HOPES THAT HE WOULD HAVE FORGOTTEN HIS PAST AND THA NOW HE WOULD BEHAVE WELL WITH JODHA AND JALAL - BUT WHAT WE GOT INSTEAD WAS A BRUTE OF A MAN WHO BOASTED ABOUT LOVE AND EMOTIONS, WHEN HE HAD NEITHER IN HIS OWN HEART. ALL HE HAD WAS THIS HUGE HATRED FOR HIS PARENTS

THAT, I GUESS, WAS THE FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN

FRNKLY MY POV IS THAT COMPARISONS OF SALIM WITH JALAL WOULD HAVE COME MUCH LATER - AFTER BASIC ACCEPTANCE

BUT SINCE WE HAVE NEVER ACCEPTED SALIM, THE QUESRION OF HIS COMPARISON WITH JALAL DOES NOT ARISE AT ALL

Great post Radhika. 🤗
Hoping this will help the CV's change a thing or two about our dear Salim Babu. 😆

In terms of characterization, I have lots against Salim Babu.

--> He is always wallowing in self pity. They should show him as strong and firm minded.

--> Respecting his father. Whatever said and done, Jalal is the emperor, and according to norms however much you despise the emperor, you are not allowed to raise you voice, even if you are his son.

--> If he is able to speak about his problems to childhood foe ANarkali, why not to his own mother or his brothers who he is shown as so fond of until now.

--> GET A GRIP ON YOURSELF SALIM. it is okay to show Salim as ambitious for the throne, because at that time everyone DID want the throne. But can his reasons for ambition be maybe helping people or even power, rather than wanting the throne JUST to make Anarkali MEH.

--> More feelings for his Mother. That time he heard that his mother was back to normal, he harldy said anything and went ahead to thank the 'ladies' [Anarkali again] who helped in applying the medicine.

--> To not be so self centred and think everything that happens revolves around him and him ONLY, and that every decision that his father makes has some hidden agenda to defame him.

--> And last is to MAN UP, and deal with all his problems than rather crying it out to Anarkali ALWAYS.

Pheww. All that venting fell good. 😆

Despite the TM makers req a lot of the discussion has moved to discussing the actual actor on a physical basis along with people posting in CAPS etc .

Please take this as a warning with regards to the above any further breach and this topic will be closed

Thanks Radhika.

I was not expecting a quick reply today as i know you are occupied on other fronts. I simply wrote my views about the "characterization" of Salim and not his looks , as your post also demanded the views on his character ONLY.

And, i would request to stick to the topic of the TM , as also pointed by the MOD. Don't want this thread to be closed because of no particular fault of TM, especially when the link of this thread has been shared with the writer. At least he must know what's wrong with the characterization of Salim, if he reads views of many members.

BTW, I still have some expectations left from the CV's after watching the precap. LOL.
I think they will make Akbar aware of all the mess going on, an if not, then we should be ready for another long dose of emotional torture. I hope Akbar comes to know SOMEHOW about this incident, koi to bata de usko.

Lavanya

This post is about the adult Salim. He is the one who is being increasingly disliked.

I am not getting into what if's here. So let's leave out kid Salim and what might have been if CVs had kept him cute. Even if he had been accepted then, the adult Salim has drawn so much flak that any initial acceptance and goodwill would be lost.

Comparison is inevitable in my opinion. When 2 actors are pitted against each other in confrontation then, viewers will compare. Esp when the leads are well accepted and well loved.

Btw, Lavanya, pls refer to Mod Note. Avoid using all Caps while posting.

Aadhya 🤗

Great points! Hope the CVs read your post and get some cues. 😊

I am happy about one thing. Even youngsters like you are very clear about what is acceptable behavior and what is not. The fact that even most youngsters feel Jalal and Jodha are correct and Salim needs to grow up indicates their maturity. 👏
