Happy 4th of July Divi!
Thanks to work I've not been able to makes posts on 2nd and 3rd July episodes, but, it's all good now.

Today's episode was good. And I say this by comparing it with sob-story we were shown for quite some time. A few things that I liked,
1. Though Jalaal is reluctant to raise his sword people around him, are preparing themselves for the imminent war. Firstly, Todarmal and Atgah Khan. The fighting sequence was well one of those regular dandiya affairs, except for Jalaal of course, who I feel spoke to the PH and told them, look you want me to act chummy and cute, I am ok with that, but, I need at least one fight scene every week, so that I don't lose my mind. Todarmal took a much more practical way of handling things, by calling in a strategic meeting, and basically nudging Atgah into believing, kuch hukmon ki taameel nahi honi chahiye. Loved that part.
2. Jodha's Amar Chitra Katha moment - Knowing what a fan Jallu is of Krishna, she preferred to use the example of Kans to make Jalaal understand the importance of punishing the one who erred, even if they were blood.
3. Ruqaiyya's scene was again a well shot and well-acted one. Appealing to her long lost friend, the sang dil sipahi, who had punished the near and dear ones when they tried to harm him and his beghum's relations, she made a great point. I wondered if Jo had lied that Shen had stubbed her toe on purpose, Jalaal would have dumped her in the dungeons for good.
4. MA's folly - For some reason, I feel, it was in a way prophetic that MA put CB in the back of her own hojra. Adham meanwhile makes full use of his new-found dimaag (the way his foster bro is basically exploiting his new-found dil with overflowing emotions), and looks skeptic and seems to have grown a degree of self-preservation. He knows, for the continued pleasure of harassing bandhis, he needs to be alive and in the mehel. 😆

That said a few observations -
1. Kahan gaya helmet? There was a ahem helmet when he arrived at the scene of chaos, but next scene, it's gone!
2. Changing necklaces - When Jo was talking to him, in the profile shot, it's the necklace with 3 brooch, but in the front shot it changes. So how many times do they shoot a scene? God that's tedious...
3. Changing clothes - After basically spending an entire day in one jaama, both he and Ruqaiyya changed their outfits for the match. Par kyun?
4. Ruqaiyya got a new jhumar.
5. Precap scene - Observe Jalaal's eyes and voice, both look and sound like he had a long night. But, the words were what I was dying to hear. Finally, Akbar was back.

It was funny that Jalaal said, the Akbar that people had named would play fair and square and would not snatch the right from his sister. But, wasn't it his duty to protect the very people who had given him that name?

Atgah saab, your dhamki to behead that hapless soldier who had brought the new of MC's army was seriously laughable. Given what a sham Mughal espionage is at this moment, killing a few that are actually good is a major folly.

So how did the beakmen manage to come so soon, and why was nobody informed till they reached Punjab? You would think, they dug an underground tunnel directly from Kabul to Punjab. 😆

All in all a better episode than usual.

Raksha, your take on tonight's episode is a scream, and I can barely see the monitor for tears of laughter. But folks and my dear Divya, here is my impressionistic take on the whole.

Shyamala Aunty

Jodha Akbar 278: The Shahenshah is back!

That was just it, folks, WHAT a relief it was!!

And Ruqaiya had a truly grand scene (how come the CVs let it thru intact, with all those splendid lines?😉) which was the clincher in bringing Jalal around. She was not just forceful, she drew on her lifelong acquaintance with Jalal to press all the right buttons. In no particular order:

The naam of the Jannat Aashiyani Shahenshah Humayun, the shaan of the Mughal sultanate, the awaam.

She demanded that the old Jalal rise again. The Jalal who had picked up the shamsheer at 9 and become Shahenshah at 13. The Jalal who had never forgiven an enemy of the Mughal sultanate. He now had to decide whether to write history with his shamsheer, or let the sultanate become history.

That the Shahenshah first and primary bond was with the takht, and all his loved ones came only after that.

She very neatly wove in his dil and his mohabbat and then swept them off the board by asserting that the sultanate and the awaam did not now need an dildaar aashiq or an affectionate brother, but a sangdil sipahi who could destroy his enemies and protect his awaam.

The terrible fate that would await his begums if he did not fight, and the degradation that the conquerors would inflict on his mother: that was truly a master stroke.

Even while dismissing Nigar's claims on him as his sister by citing what all she had done to him, she gave Jalal a way out by pointing out that he need not raise his shamsheer against his sister, but raise it he must, to fulfil his vow and his duties as the Shahenshah.

It was like the best drill sergeant's rallying speech I have ever heard, and no wonder, with her exhortations and Jodha's more ponderous lines ringing in his head, Jalal finally comes around.

The thing is that both she and Jodha essentially said the same things, about the Shahenshah's duty to his subjects, about the need to set personal relationships aside to fulfil this duty, and so on. The difference was in the way Ruqaiya put it.

She was far less staid and preachy, and she couched her arguments in a way that was far more accessible to Jalal than the very strong Krishna-Kamsa example (one presumes that Jodha did not mean this to be taken literally re: Nigar!).

Plus, Ruqaiya drew on her intimate knowledge of Jalal and her years of experience in handling him. She also appealed to his pride in his heritage, his love for his father, and his deep sense of responsibility for all those under his care - his begums, his mother, or the awaam - far more tellingly and effectively than Jodha.

Who was, for the first time ever and to my great astonishment, given a sharp rebuff by Jalal and summarily dismissed. It was noteworthy that he did not say anything dismissive to Ruqaiya, for all that her bhashan was far longer and far more assertive than Jodha's . Plus he turned up in the human chess room when he got her message, even at such a time. Clearly, the habits of a lifetime were asserting themselves; he has long been used to listening to Ruqaiya, plus they share a fierce commitment to the aan, baan aur shaan of the Mughal sultanate, which is visceral and instinctive, not a recently acquired loyalty like Jodha's.

It would never have occurred to Jodha to summon the Shahenshah to the chess room! But one has to hand it to Jodha. She has no ego, especially when it comes to gathering support for any cause she holds dear, and she is objective enough to realise the advantages that a childhood friend would have over her in such a situation. I only wonder whether she ever found out that Ruqaiya had gone to Jalal after turning down her request to her to do so. I hope she did.

Now I suppose Jodha and Ruqaiya will go to war against just Nigar, while Jalal & Co. take care of Mahachuchak's army, plus Abul Mali's henchmen. One is thankful for small mercies; I had fully expected that Jalal would sit weeping in his hoojra while his begumath took to the battlefield.

Mirza Hakim is apparently still in the role of Lakshman. Wonder what Mahachuchak would do to him when she gets her hands on him!

  1. Surprise thay Ruqaiya didn't tell Jodha - see what a mess and weak kneed jerk you have made Shahenshah into. Had he been my old Jalal the very shatru who are prahaar-ing Agra now, would have been vanquished evenbefore they dreamt to place their toe in the territory of Mughal sultanate

Shreya
Remember, Jalal was hesitant to fight BK too in the initial episodes. So it wasn't a surprise that he hesitated to fight his sis. His relatives were always his weakness. When hit by your weaknesses you do need your better half ( halves here) to pull your strings back. Just a day's hesitation-it is admissible. I do call him lallu many times. But today he wasn't. He was just pained and temporarily paralysed.

Very nice post Shyamalaji. What I feel was that Kansa and Bhagwad Gita example didn't work
on Jalal because he never heard about it before , Jodha came in his life.Though he must be dealing with Hindus before but with Jodha now a part of his family ,he is now becoming aware of these Hindu beliefs and scriptures. If somebody is listening to Mahabhartha stories or hymns of Gita from childhood ,for him it would have been effective.
Well Ruku is his friend. And sometimes a friend can reach to your heart more effectively than your beloved .Ruku's speech was mind blowing and she put forth all valid points. For me Ruku and Jodha giving advice to their husband and he listening to them is not a big deal. What Shiv- Parvati do on Kailas Parbat or Laxmi and Vishnu do on Sheshnaag ? They do discuss matters and many times these devis have given advice to their respective godly husbands. They have listened to them.Same here.
Jodha going to Ruku for help shows that she doesn't want to just enjoy being Jalal's fav nor does she want total control on him.She understands importance of others also in his life.See she didn't go to Salima who is known for her advice but she went to Ruku as she knew who is going to have more impact.
But the main thing is Jalal ,the warrior is back and I will bow to him with respect.

sometimes you need a hard slap to get out of self pity and emotional deluge...and this is what exactly ruqaiyya delivered and there is no one else in the sultanate who can slap him and get away with it...he needs that jerk ,the jolt...ruqaiyya is practical and hardened ,not one to be swayed by emotions and for her the mughal sultanat and the Emperor comes before everything even her best friend...hence it is not surprising that she laid out before him the repercussions of his no stand ...jalal knew everything but it was necessary that he hear it loud and clear without any sugar coating ...

i really fail to understand what exactly are the cvs planning with ruqaiyya...why are they taking her to the extreme opposites...when one starts liking her ,they will push her to the other side with one more of her silly plan
