sati-partha, is this rule foolowed by Ragvanci ladies yes or no.
Rani Rupmati .?. The Mistress of Baz Bahadur.?. She ate poison when Adham Khan tried to take her under his control...🤬.after defeating Baz Bahudur in Malwa in 1561..SHe did NOT commit Jauhar.
Sati was prevalent since Gupta rulers times, around 4th/5th Century AD or even before perhaps. And, initially it was ONLY voluntary and done if husband died. But, later became rigid. It was NOT ONLY confined to a single community.
Jauher was done esp. by Rajvanshi ladies if their kingdom lost a war. They used to jump in fire to save their honor from the invading armies. There were different types of Jauher(can't be discussed here.😳.). Details are given in - Padmavat by Malik Muhammed Jayasi(1540's). Where Rani Padmini and other ladies of Chittor did Jauher,(around 1302) to save their honor. The idea was that even after dying, their bodies should not be present for the enemies to be seen/touched.
Hence, they preferred to be reduced to ashes.😕
