okay, this question would have been asked by many before. i apologise if i cause any inconvenience.
why did akbar marry his paternal cousin ruqaiya?
as far as i know, mind you i havent done research, this might be wrong. she is humayun's youngest (or some brother, not really sure) brother's daughter. how is that possible?

dont sujamal and jodha share the same relation. not degrading any relationship here. arent jalal and ruqs like siblings?

it is possible that you may have clarified it somewhere, and i havent reached there yet. i am trying to read it all in order. if you have, please tell me the link. would be grateful if you could pm me the answer to my query.

We muslim can marry our cousin brother or sister. We don't have any problem with it. But I heard hindus have some binding they can't marry their cousins.
As Jalal and Rukkaiya r cousins they can marry each other.

So Salim fall in love with Jodh bai. Then where does NurJahan came from? Did he love both of them. No wonder Nur disliked Jodh.
Baap, beta, pota all are same 😆 . Its really a very cute coincidence.

so far i read that it was a spring festival of Nauroz in 1611, where Jahangir first set eyes upon her. historical reports say that she was a remarkable beauty and it perhaps is not surprising that Jahangir married her within two months 😆 He first gave her the title Nur Mahal which he changed in 1616 to Nur Jahan, or "Light of the World." nur jahan & jahangir hunting story from jahangirnama 😳 the poet called nur jahan '' tiger slayer & man smitter'' 😳

56 KHUSRAU'S MOTHER.

sacrificed a thousand sons and brothers for one hair of
mine. She constantly wrote to Khusrau and urged him to
be sincere and affectionate to me. When she saw that
it was of no use and that it was unknown how far he
would be led away, she from the indignation and high
spirit which are inherent in the Rajput character
determined upon death. Her mind was several times
disturbed, for such feelings were hereditary, and her
ancestors and her brothers had occasionally showed signs
of madness, but after a time had recovered.
At a time
when I had gone hunting, on Zi-1-lrijja 26th, 1013 1 (May
6th, 1605), she in her agitation swallowed a quantity of
opium, and quickly passed away. It was as if she had
foreseen this behaviour of her unworthy son.

My first marriage and that at the commencement of my
adolescence was with her. After Khusrau's birth I gave
her the title of Shah Beo-am. When she could not endure
the bad conduct of her son and brother towards me she
became disgusted with life and died, thereby escaping the
present grief and sorrow. In consequence of her death,
from the attachment I had for her, I passed some days
without any kind of pleasure in life or existence, and for
four days, which amount to 32 watches, I took nothing in
the shape of food or drink. When this tale was told to
my revered father, a letter of condolence of excessive
kindness and affection reached this devoted disciple, and
he sent me a robe of honour and the auspicious turban tied
just as he had taken it off his head. This favour threw
water on the flame of my grief and afforded complete quiet
and repose to my unquietude and disturbance. My intention
in relating these circumstances is to point out that no evil
fortune is greater than when a son, through the impropriety

abhay can you plz explain the underline part 😕 is there any pshycological matter 😕

Najma,
Ruqayya Begum was daughter of Hindal Mirza, who was paternal uncle of Akbar, and brother of Humayun. And, they can marry, as far as i know, in their religion.

BTW, Akbar banned 'SUCH' marriages between cousins, and HE HAS ALSO given a REASON for this BAN. You can see the FIRST comment on Page-1, of this thread, about the BAN and the REASON. Link: Click here.

Hi,

I have already answered the same question, in one of earlier posts. I am quoting the same "trail" of comments here as well. See below.

Would add one line here that. It was a Rajputana Practice/custom that - " If they used to take a vow for something, they were required to DO IT " . For them their WORD meant a lot. And, in case they were NOT able to fulfill it, then they EVEN considered ending their lives, rather than living.!!!!!!!.

This practice of standing by their words, and fulfilling their oath, regardless (without caring) of their lives, is what is termed as madness. 😕

{
I can give one example i remember, demonstrating such an act. There was a Hindu ruler Jaipal Shahi in Punjab, around 1000 A.D. He had vowed to defeat an enemy, but he could NOT succeed. So, his vow was not fufilled. Hence, he gave up his life, and entered his OWN funeral pyre, ALIVE.!!!!!!!!.
This is what i was mentioning about the Rajputana Tradition, of STANDING BY THEIR WORD, despite any circumstance. Now, it is upto a person, he may call this anything.
}

But, this speaks TONS about the faithfulness, high ideals, and honesty of their words. ( In the present case, Jahangir talks of the Amer Clan and Man Bai in particular. )

BTW, Abul Fazl has given a reason for selection of Man Bai as the first wife of Salim. He writes --> She brings a " FINE GENETIC pool " with her. Link: Click here.

Jahangir notes that:

" She was at times disturbed, for such feelings were hereditary, and her ancestors and her brothers had occasionally showed signs of madness, but after a time had recovered. "

^^^^
Similar thing has been noted by Abu'l Fazl and Badayuni about Bhagwan Das, of Amer Clan, especially.

By madness, Jahangir means that at times, the Rajvanshis even attempted giving their lives if they found their "WORD" getting wronged somehow. As they held their word in HIGH Regard.!.

Originally posted by: history_geek

Hey..!!..

That is ONLY a way of expressing. Nothing to feel bad. This is INFACT, as you mentioned relates to their faithfulness, honesty, and high IDEALS, that they were TRUE to their WORDS.

Originally posted by: RadhikaS0

madness sounds bad in English but deewanapan will not sound so bad! In India, we call people we like pagal or silly quite affectionately. So need to take offence.

I knew this statement would lead to questions. But included this statement 'coz many times this issue has been raised. Anyways the presence of this statement also depends to an extent on the translators version and also how this word was used in those days.

Hence, there WAS NO "psycological matter" involved. :)
