Choosing between Abhishek, Akshaye and Salman

Says Mona Singh, "The film has been titled Main To Chala. It is produced by Bobby Pushkarna and directed by debutante Ramanan, who is from LA. I have a role very different from the clumsy Jassi and the fashionable Jessica. But I can't tell you the story. I have been sworn to secrecy."

Pushkarna is talking to Abhishek Bachchan, Akshaye Khanna and Salman Khan for the male lead. Who does Mona prefer? "Any of them would be great. All three are equally wow," she laughs.

Actress Mona Singh, seen in character as Jassi Walia in the top-rated nighttime soap opera "Jassi Jassi Koi Nahin," will be grand marshal of the India Day Parade in Edison and Iselin. Also attending the event will be her co-star Gaurav Gera, shown in character as well.

India Day to be marked with parade

ISELIN — The Asian Indian community is inviting mainstream Americans to its cultural strip for a parade next month.

"What we are trying to achieve here is to show Indian hospitality, harmony, love and the wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi," said Kulraaj Anand, program director for the Monmouth Junction-based South Asian radio station WTTM 1680 AM.

The India Day Parade recognizes India's independence. Gandhi's leadership and nonviolent form of protest forced the British out of India on Aug. 15, 1947.

The Aug. 14 parade will march down Oak Tree Road, an Asian Indian center with more than 300 shops and businesses straddling Edison and the Iselin section of Woodbridge.

"This parade is not just for Indians alone," said Jasal Amin, a member of the Indian Business Association, which is organizing the event.

Along with the celebration of

culture, the parade aims to attract a new set of consumers to the shop-lined street that offers Indian cuisine, 22-karat gold and saris, a traditional body-wrapping garb for women.

"We want more people to be aware of the area," said Mahesh Shah, president of the Indian Business Association.

The parade is being supported by 30 Asian organizations, including groups in Bergen, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties.

For those steeped in today's Indian pop culture, the parade's grand marshal will be Mona Singh, star of the top-rated nighttime soap opera, "Jassi Jassi Koi Nahin." Singh's co-star Gaurav Gera will also be attending the parade. Their show can be seen Monday through Thursday at 9 p.m. by viewers with Dish Network's Asian package.

Next few weeks in Jassi... are filled with suspense
Pooja Rawal has played a variety of roles in several TV serials, the most prominent being the ones in Kutumb, Kyunkii... Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Mehndi Tere Naam Kii. But, what's getting her rave reviews is her entry in Sony's most popular serial Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin.

Your character in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin is being watched with a lot of anticipation.
Yes and I am very glad about that. Though I have accused Armaan in the sexual harassment case, I don't think mine is a negative character. There's lot that is going to happen but as an actor, I have no right to give away the story before it is aired. So I can't say much but the next few weeks in Jassi... are filled with suspense.

You are also a key character in Rabba Ishq Na Hove…
Yes, I play the character of Amisha and complete the love quadrilateral which also has Sangeeta (Ghosh), Varun (Badola) and Nikhil (Arya). It will be aired soon on Zee and I am eagerly waiting to know its response.

How was it working with Aroona Irani?
I have worked with her in Mehndi Tere Naam Ki and it was fun coming back together after so many years. Besides, the best part about the sets of Rabba… is that it is the only set where you have more women than men. Right from the producer to the director (Nandita Puri) to the actresses in the serial, all create a fantastic environment. It's different because everywhere else, you have a male-dominated unit.

As an actress, what do you consider as your parameter to measure success?
I don't have any set parameters for myself. In fact, I think there should not be any ideal thing to do in acting. An actor has to be extremely selfish and keep on trying new roles.

Tell us about the Paritosh Painter play that you are doing…
It is called See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil. It will be my first performance on stage and it is always said that theatre is the most difficult platform to act. There are no second takes and the lines have to be memorised thoroughly. I play a blind girl in the play and was very apprehensive initially but I have learnt a lot from Paritosh. Theatre is an extremely beautiful thing to do.

What do you look forward to after a long day at work?
The minute it's pack-up time I rush back to my son Raaj. He's four years old and a great fan of action movies. He has seen more James Bond movies than me. I love playing gun fight with him or taking him for horse-riding or simply shopping with him. My life almost revolves around him.

What is your dream possession?
My house. I bought it with my own hard-earned money without any help from anyone. Trust me, there is a different feeling when you walk into a house which does not belong to your father or your husband but only to you.

Sony to bring Bankimchandra's novel, 'Durgesh Nandini' to screen

After Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Sony is all set to introduce its next do-gooder on screen.

The poster of the 1965 film directed by B. Mitra

This time the lady is going to be called Durgesh Nandini. The show will be an adaptation of famous novelist Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay's first Bengali novel of the same name, published in 1865. The novel has been made into a Bengali and a Hindi film as well. The show will be produced by Shobhna Desai Productions and directed by Vipul A Shah.

The novel, a milestone of sorts during that era, had a Rajput hero and a Bengali heroine as the lead pair. Our sources tell us that the Sony show, based on the Bengali novel is a family drama that deals with the complications that arise after the family patriarch's death.

The show, touted to be the next big thing on Sony, has been compared to Jassi…in the way the plans are being made for it. The launch date though is not yet fixed. The preparations for the show are much under wraps, and a mere two to three days' shooting has been canned. The tentative cast has been decided, but some of these may opt out due to date problems.

While the lead protagonist is likely to be played by Bhojpuri film actress Rinku, there are

Mihir and Maninee : first time on screen together?

several prominent television stars, scheduled to play major characters in the show.

"Yes, I am doing the show, and have just shot the pilot. I play this out and out negative character, who is the bahu of the house and who tries to manipulate her husband into doing things according to her whims and fancies," says Sonia Kapoor.

The story is based on the age old fight between the good and the evil. The head of the family appoints Durgesh as the trustee of his property and thus she incurs the wrath of the rightful heirs. They gang up against her and try to drive her out of the house, only to realise that it has been bequeathed to her by their own father. From thereon begins Durgesh's struggle to make the brothers realise their folly and become worthy of the wealth that is theirs to claim.

"I play one of the three brothers and it is a good role. He is rich but cannot claim his wealth," says Anupam Bhattacharya, who has been known to do negative characters earlier.

Rajesh Kumar, who plays Rosesh in Star One's Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, has also shot the pilot, but he is a little unsure about doing the show due to severe time constraints. "I would love to do the show. But I work 18 days for Ba Bahu…and then there is Sarabhai as well. I haven't taken a call yet," says Rajesh.

Maninee De, who has recently quit The Great Indian Comedy Show to do movies has also been approached for the show along with hubby Mihir Mishra, but the pretty lady is undecided about committing to the show. "It's a negative character and I don't know if I want to do it," sighs Maninee, while also agreeing that she might give in to the temptation of the opportunity of acting with Mihir, but she has her own share of date problems too.

Although the show's tentative cast is ready and raring to go, the time slot and the days that the show will be aired on remains to be decided.

This is the tentative cast of the show...

Amit Sadh played the lead in the Star One show, Guns n Roses. After the show went off-air, this will be Amit's latest offering.
Anupam Bhattacharya played the conniving brother in Zee's Koshish Ek Asha. His kitty seems to be full with Sahara's Woh Rehne Wali... and Star Plus' Dekho Magar Pyar Se
Maninee Mihir Mishra just quit The Great Indian...and has done an epiosdic for Star One's Remix and also has a role in Zee's Sarrkaar. Busy doing films like Krish and Sare Sath Phere, Maninee might opt out of the show. If she decides not to, then this will be the first time that the real life couple, will be seen first time together on screen.
Mihir Mishra, who is currently playing the lead in Sahara's afternoon show, Hare Kaanch ki Choodiyan will also be part of the show. He was also part of Zee's Kabhie Haan Kabhie Naa and Star Plus' Sanjeevani.
Vishal Puri plays the lead in Piya Ka Ghar and plays Puneet in Star One's Remix.
Rajesh Kumar plays Rosesh in Star One's Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Subodh in Star Plus' Ba Bahu aur Baby. He too might opt out due to date issues.
Sonia Kapoor plays Sonia Ray in Star One's Remix. She did a cameo in Kabhie Haan Kabhie Naa

Runaway Groom
Apoorva Agnihotri on wanting a makeover, getting married to Jassi and being the sidekick.
Sulakshana Gupta
So are you and Jassi finally getting married?
We've already been married some three or four times in our dream sequences. But I'm told it will soon happen for real. (Catch the wedding on August 5). Are you still under an exclusive contract with Sony?
No that was till last year. I'm free to take on other projects.
Sulakshana Gupta

Is Jassi... going the melodramatic way because of falling TRPs?
It's difficult to sustain something that's been consistently different. For two years, we managed to stay ahead and people imitated our work. Also, audiences are easily bored—gimmicks like song and dance sequences keep them interested. Are you happy with the way Armaan Suri's character has shaped up?
There's no room for creativity in a daily soap. Unless the plot's going haywire I try not to interfere. I butted in when my character was becoming too negative. Anyway, ten years down the line, viewers will only vaguely remember who Jassi and Armaan were. Doesn't it get lonely these days? Most scenes are romantic moments between you and Jassi?
I definitely miss the old office gang and hope they manage to weave them back into the story. Parmeet Sethi's one of the finest comic actors I've seen. And these days Vikas Bhalla and I have really bonded. Were you ever threatened by Purab's (Samir Soni) popularity?
No one person can carry a show on their shoulders. Plus, I wasn't intimidated while shooting with Shah Rukh Khan in Pardes. This was a piece of cake. Did you ever consider quitting?
I'm under no illusions. The show is called Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin not Armaan Jaisa Koi Nahin. I have no hassles with doing television. I know tracks change and the spotlight can't be on me all the time. How would you have wanted Armaan Suri to turn out?
When I took the role, he was a business tycoon who'd go to any length for his company. Today Armaan is someone who's learnt from his mistakes. Sometimes I feel the character's achieved its purpose, at other times, no. What did you think of the Jassi makeover? Would you undergo one?
I loved the new look. On the sets we welcomed the change as we were tired of the glasses and braces. I did try long hair for a while but everyone hated it. Now friends are saying I should give it another shot.

If you had to rewrite Jassi..., what would be different?
I'd definitely have a scene showing Raj crying. I'd

KBC on comeback runs into 'bride' Jassi
CHANDRIMA S. BHATTACHARYA
Bachchan: Ready for big day

Mumbai, July 31: This Friday, life will be very hectic for television watchers.

It will be Kaun Banega Crorepati vs Jassi's marriage.

Sparked off by Amitabh Bachchan on KBC 2, a war will erupt on the small screen, with the two most popular entertainment channels marshalling their biggest stars.

While Bachchan will be back on the small screen on STAR Plus with his quiz show, promising Rs 2 crore and four lifelines instead of three — the fourth called Flip — Sony will field its biggest icon Jassi at that time in marriage gear to fight the TVR battle.

In a one-off episode at 9.30 pm on Friday — Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin is telecast between Monday and Thursday — Jassi will finally get married to Armaan at the very same hour that Bachchan will be gently quizzing the man on the hot seat from 9 pm to 10 pm.

Sony denies that the muharat of Jassi's marriage to Armaan, so long overdue that it is late now, has anything to do with KBC, but the timing seems to be too much of a coincidence.

But if it is Bachchan and Jassi leading the two channels from the front, they will be backed up by an army of other stars from the fold of the respective channels.

Flanking KBC 2 will be all the highest TVR-earning saas bahus on STAR Plus.

In a recent reprogramming decision, the K-serials, which did a Monday to Thursday shift so far, were stretched to Friday.

Jassi: Wedding bells?

On August 5, with Bachchan, Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi will also make a Friday debut at 10.30 pm, to be followed by Kahiin To Hoga at 11 pm.

Both will be telecast on Fridays for the first time. KBC will be preceded by Kasauti Zindagi Kay, which has been telecast on Fridays for a month.

A new serial called Baa, Bahoo aur Baby, which seems to be no different in its story line from the K-serials except in the choice of the initials, will kick off the same day.

If STAR Plus is pumping in so much programming into Friday, Sony is trying to deck Jassi up in as much publicity.

The marriage is meant to be as glittery as it gets and Sony has also planned a huge wedding campaign for the bride, which got washed out in the Mumbai floods.

Jassi will be dressed up by Aishwarya Rai's designer Neeta Lulla, who has already made an appearance in the serial. The bride will have her jewellery made by former actor and now successful jewellery designer Neelam Kothari.

On the wedding day, musical bands would be placed in high footfall areas, with placards inviting all to come Jassi's wedding.

At entrances to malls and railway stations, women would be placed in wedding finery, probably sprinkling rose water, the channel says.

The entire Fame Gurukul team is also very likely to turn up, said the channel spokesperson.

But Jassi will not finally make it to the wedding.

Whether there will be many viewers for Jassi, despite the wedding, the finery and the runaway bride, will be clear this Friday. But Bachchan has already got his set.

The programme has received a "record-breaking" 1.3 crore telephone calls, says the channel.

First look: Jassi's wedding

Jassi & Armaan

Finally, the time has come.

In Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, the Walia and Suri families are bustling with preparation for an extravagant wedding.

Jassi's dream of marrying her longtime love Armaan Suri is finally coming true, and the special wedding episode airs on Friday, August 5, at 9.30 pm on Sony Entertainment Television.

Wedding preparations are on full-swing at the channel, and designer Neeta Lulla is crafting an exquisite trousseau for Jassi. The wedding outfit is a pink lehenga choli with an aqua-orange dupatta. It weighs around 5 kgs, comprising exquisite embroidery and zardozi work, crystals and semi-precious stones.

The celebrity guests are buzzing with excitement. Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant, who had sung a special love song for the couple, will be in attendance.

Queenie Dhody, who played a major part in designing Jassi's new look, gushes, "Finally, our shy little Jassi has taken a step into the major part of her life. I can't imagine how pretty she will look on the happiest day of her life."

Mandira Bedi is also 'super-excited' about the wedding.

So, prepare yourself. Everyone's invited.

Maddy talks about leaving Jassi

August 04, 2005

First noticed for his role as Gautam in Tara, Rajesh Khera enjoyed much popularity as the over-the-top, gay fashion designer Maddy in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin.

While his character has been put on hold, Khera cannot stop fuming at his producers' behaviour though. Vidya Prabhu caught the actor in a candid mood, and grilled him about Jassi, and his forthcoming serials and films.

Your role in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin has apparently come to an end...

I am not permanently out of the serial. It's just that my role has been sidelined for now.

When will you be back?

I am as clueless about it as you are!

What was your reaction when the producers told you about your role being put on hold?

They didn't inform me about it. Which is what annoyed me the most.

Would you come back if they were to call you again?

I can't say anything right now. Let them call me first!

Didn't the role of Maddy propel you to fame?

It did help me get recognition. For the first time, my co-stars called to congratulate me and appreciate my work.

Does that make Maddy your favourite among all roles you have played so far?

It was a different role, a challenge in that I was playing a gay character, as opposed to the negative roles I was playing until then. So it helped me break the mould and display my versatility. But it would be unfair to call it my favourite as I equally loved doing the roles of Gautam in Tara, Ranjit in Swabhimaan and Rastogi in Saaya, not to mention my work in the serial Patang.

How did acting come about?

I always wanted to be an actor. Even as a child, I would participate in skits and dramas. I had no guidance to pursue acting right away though, so I dabbled in marketing, appeared for various competitive exams -- just because my friends were doing the same thing -- and made no headway. When I was 24, I finally decided to pack my bags and come to Mumbai to pursue acting. One year down the line, bingo! I landed the role of Gautam in Tara. That's where it all began.

What is the first thing you look at before you take on a role?

It needs to be a substantial role, and not necessarily a big one. Then, of course, there's the money aspect.

You have never worked on any of the saas-bahu serials...

I've never been offered a role by the makers of these serials.

Almost all of your roles have been negative roles...

Yes, I was slotted in that category. But then I don't exactly have the chocolate-boy looks.

Your ideal role would be...

The one essayed by Al Pacino in the movie Scent Of A Woman. I would also love to play the role of an army man. As a matter of fact, I did play the role of a BSF jawan in the movie Tango Charlie, but I would like to do more such roles.

Any regrets?

I regret doing only five roles in a career spanning 11 years. I wish I could do many more.

What are your forthcoming projects like?

I am doing a movie called Gabbarsingh.com. It is an out and out fun movie, more along the lines of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. It stars Rajpal Yadav and Sanjay Suri among many others. I play the role of an assasin, Rajan Pillai. It's a serious role with negative shades. As for TV, I will soon appear on a serial called Sixers, which will go on air in August. It revolves around cricket, cricketers, matchfixing, the works. I play the role of Dan, a star player's manager.

Do you plan to take up movies full time?

I want to strike a balance between TV and films. But yes, movies get you more recognition, more money. Also, things are much more planned when it comes to shooting for a film. In that sense, movies are a better deal than TV, which lacks on the grounds of both, creativity and planning.

The name's his claim to fame

We don't know if Tony and Deeya Singh consulted anyone when they gave Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin its title, but we do know that the duo have the blessings of Sanjay Jumaani for its next venture.

DJ's, the company floated by the Singhs, will debut its next big show on Sony soon. And although neither Tony, Deeya nor Jumaani are willing to reveal the name of the new serial, Jumaani confirms that the two had come to him recently to get his approval and the title appropriately tweaked. Jumaani definitely has his hands full. He recently named a Balaji serial, Kalyani, for a South Indian channel, and is busy advising Gaurang Doshi and Vipul A Shah on the names of their new film ventures.
