A couple hours later, as Ragini sat, folding up the laundry in her room, she heard the door click open. "Kaun hai?", she shouted from inside, as she started moving the clothes out of her way. "Main hoon maa", Aagam replied, as he walked towards the room, with his backpack. "Arrey, tu abhi abhi toh gaya tha na, 2 ghaton mein college khatam ho gaya?", Ragini inquired curiously. "Arrey maa, woh 2 din baad se exams shuru ho rahe hai na, isliye aaj ke baaki ke classes cancel ho gaye, toh mein ghar aagaya", he explained excitedly. "Oh achcha, Par tu itna khush kyon ho raha hai?", she asked, matching her smile with his grin, that had never left his face since he had entered and seen her. "Mom mom mom, aaj pura din mein aap ke saath rahoonga. Hum saath mein bahot maza karenge.. Koi disturb karnewala nahi!", he cried excitedly, and took her into a bear hug. "Tujhe padhai karni hai, exams hai na? Jao aur padho, hum baad mein bhi maza kar sakte hai", she said sternly, giving him that mom-ish look. "Mom, aap mujhe padhai karvao", he exclaimed. "Kya? Tu college ke final year mein hai, 4th standard mein nahi", Ragini said, dismissing his silly request. "Mom, jab mein 4th grade mein tha, tab aap nahi the na, tab aap ke saath nahi padh paya na. Meri hamesha se khwaish thi, ke meri mom, mujhe padhaye", he said, with a tear at the back his eye, as he remembered those tough days without her. Ragini, hugged him tight and wiped her own moistened eyes. Then, taking a second to pull herself back, "Achcha theek hai baba, kya padhna hai", she asked, happily losing the battle with her son.
Aagam, in all excitement claimed, "Mein abhi aya" and quickly sprinted to his room downstairs. In no time, he returned with the fattest, bulkiest book Ragini had seen in a long time. She nervously looked and gulped as the book moved closer and closer. "Kaunsa subject hai?", she asked timidly, staring at the tome in his hand. "Economics!", he answered as he found a comfortable spot on the bed. "Tumhe pata hai na, mein medical student thi, economics padhoge mujhse?", she asked embarrassed at what she had gotten herself into. "Mom, aap apne student hone ki baat karte ho, toh bahot achcha lagta hai", he said with a blush. "Chup kar! Kuch aur nahi padh sakte?", she said, unable to explain her nervousness. "Nahi! Mujhe aapse yahi padhna hai!", he announced, opening up the book. Ragini sighed and saw no escape, "Ab bata plan kya hai? Economics mein, main kaise madad karoon?", she asked genuinely in all her innocence. Aagam confidently pulled out a printed sheet of paper, from between the pages and handed it over to Ragini, "Mom, aap yeh question poochiye, and I will answer", he said, much to Ragini's relief. "Ok, fine!", Ragini said and started off with the first question, to which Aagam answered expertly fairly matching the answer on the sheet. So Ragini continued with the rest of the questions, and Aagham aced each one. 5 questions later, Ragini put the paper down, "Tumhe toh saare jawab aate hai!", she said surprised. "Exactly mom! Yeh maine pechle hafte hi padh liya tha. Ab yeh book main se padhe?", Aagham teased with a straight face, bringing back the dread on Ragini's face. "I was joking mom, dont worry", Aagam revealed with a hearty laugh, then in a serious tone, he pulled out a thin notebook from between the tome, "Mein is book ki baat kar raha hoon, mom. Main chahta hoon, hum saath mein yeh padhe", he said softly. "Yeah kya hai?", she said as, she accepted it curiously. "Mein US gaya tha na, tab isko dhoond nikala. Bachpan mein, jab mein aapko miss karta tha na Mom, toh mein aapko imagine karke, aapke liye, poems likhta tha. Yeh woh poem book hai meri. Yeh meri secret hai, Suhani ko bhi nahi pata iske baare mein", he said, gathering his strength.
As they turned the cover. the first page had a single line in a crude childlike handwriting and read
"Mommy, my Mommy - where are you, I miss you. When will you come?"
"Yeah maine 3rd grade mein likha tha!" Aagham said embarrassed. "Bahot sweet hai!", she said with tears, realizing the 8 year old's longing for his mom. Then they read on, his poems got crisper and deeper with age, each one equally drenched in the growing thirst of the boy. Ragini was overjoyed and over grieved, at the same time, as she read each of them over and over, before moving on to the next. Then, there was a special one, decorated with golden stars and a naive picture of a woman..
My joy today knows no bounds
For a glimpse of you I chanced upon
Innocent, simple and beautiful, you are
An angel, a shining star
Cuddled in your arms, warmly I smiled
with your touch I shined
Not a second, away from me are you
Mom, do you love me too?
"Yeh bahot special hai mom, maine us din, accidentally, dad ke purse mein se, hamari family photo dekh liya tha. usme aap the.. mujhe god mein liye huye", he whispered softly, lowering his head. Ragini, put the book down and took him into a hug, the tears were rolling down. Aagham cried too, he cried his heart out, letting out all the tears he had held back to himself for all these years. Although, he hid well, they had built up in him and he had never found the right time, to vent it out, to overcome the pain of longing he had experienced for 15 long years. Finally, the moment of relief had found him, in the arms of his dearest mother.
