A few hours later, Dr Devika knocked on Dr Neil's door to get the final signatures for the internship program.
"Dr Neil, Interns are starting tomorrow, 3rd of July and as the head of this hospital, you are meeting with them at 10 am", she announced.
"3rd July? I don't work on 3rd July, Don't you know?", he thoughtlessly blurted out, lost in the papers in front of him. "I... I.. didn't know that, But Ragini said, you were available.. we.. we will make some other arrangements then. May I.. ask why?", she hesitantly questioned.
"Here you go", he handed over the papers. Then, as if something had dawned on him, he muttered, "I will be right back" and rushed straight to Ragini's.
Excitedly announcing, "Ragini, Ragini, tumhe pata hai kal kya hai?", he barged into her cabin.
"Haan Nachiket", she replied causally, barely looking up from the file. "Ragini, dekho toh yahan", he demanded, closing the file in her hand.
"Kal bahot khaas din hai. You know what? we should go to the beach, you love beaches na, ya phir, we should go do shopping all day, just me and you, but that might be tiring. We should get out of city, how about going to Panchgani, or I think, we should take a leisure trip to RK's farm house.. We should make this day memorable, Ragini! Tell me how you want to spend the day?", he enthusiastically concluded, catching his breath.
"Nachiket, Nachiket Nachiket! Baap re, itne saare options..", she said smiling at her husband's rush. "How about not taking the day off?"
"Ragini", he started in a rather serious tone, "Ragini tomorrow holds a special significance in my life. You know all those years, when I was away from you, I would secretly take this day off and escape to the beach. Spend the whole day sitting on the sand, gazing aimlessly at the sky, at the ocean. I think, I tried to find you in the blue gushing waters, in the vastness, tried to find myself.. all alone. It was on this day, I let my tears flow freely, pondering on all the "what ifs". But now that you are with me, I want to erase the memories of tears attached to this date, a date that stands for the most blessed day of my life", he finished, taking her hands into his and gazing deep into her moist eyes.
"Nachiket, I want to revive this date, more than you. For, I dont even remember how I passed this day, all those years. How will I? I was only physically here. My heart, my mind, my soul, lost in those memories of 4 years, lost in the what ifs, desperately searching, waiting, hoping. in the void. May be I was there on that beach with you, may be I didnt exist.. I dont know", she sobbed.
After a while of silence, wiping away her tears, he spoke again, "toh bolo kahan jaaye, kya kare?", the excitement returning into his voice. "Usse pehle ek baat batao, its going to be 22 years tomorrow, but its actually only our 5th year of togetherness. Tum anniversary, kaise celebrate karna chahte ho? like its our 22nd or 5th?", she asked with a smile.
"Of course 22nd", he exclaimed with pride.
"Toh Dr Budhdhe Khanna, hum roz ki tarah kaam pe aayenge aur shaam ko sab ke saath restraurant jaayenge aur family dinner karenge. Aise hi manate hai 22nd anniversary.", she said, pinching his nose.
Nachiket thought for a while, admiring the gleam in his wife's eyes. He argued otherwise, insisting on them taking the day off, but was countered on every argument. Finally he gave up. "Are you sure?", he asked one last time. "Yes!", she said confidently with a winning smile. He unwillingly agreed, with a frown, at which her grin widened.
Closing the distance between them, he leaned in and whispered, "phir hum raat ko 5th year anniversary manayenge, ok?", instantly turning her winning smile into a deep blush.
