the influence of hindi cinema on all writers is pretty obvious. gautam hegde tried to expolore that passion in mb, unfortunately, not my kind of thing and i felt the pitching was all wrong. in asr, they found bits of anand, amitabh's angry young man, and perhaps even little notes of the offbeat shammi, that way of sitting quietly looking at nothing, a bit gur dutt, definitely something dev anand... oh the influence is clear in dialogues. so many references. but somehow it all gelled here. that was the nice thing. and mr sobti of course took all the cues and then created a character who had many archetypes whispering in him, but his asr came together and become ek piece ekdam.
actually our hindi cinema is such a treasure trove and a culture wrap, part of all of us whether we know or not. the writers and other creatives of this industry especially up to the early eighties were uff...yet, it was considered popular mass stuff, not high enough. sometimes i listen to songs and wonder which part of this is not art. or see a shot from a normal commercial movie like, let's say "khamoshi" and go uhhh that was so good, but they'll say it's just a movie, yaar. 😆
grew up in delhi. my hindi is still pretty awful. but i love that josh of it, and with a bit of urdu chucked in, muaah muaah. recently in benaras, heard, banarshga... sweet like its paan.
