ASR seduced us... not the actor playing him

I have been watching some old episodes and some other serials to understand why I got addicted to IPK. Here is part 1 of my reason. Part 2 is Khushi and in this case the actress did make a difference because he character, though it started out strong, lost its was. But the actress made all the difference in keeping us glued.

(My Khushi post: http://www.india-forums.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=3341389)

Here goes...

One of the real reasons why ASR was such a powerful character was because he was such a modern man. He was guy of today: he knew his mind and was not afraid to speak it out. He was mostly progressive and non interfering kind of guy, self-made to boot and very dependable. Brother, aunt, in-laws'all could depend on his. Hell even ex-girl friends and sis in laws could depend on him without him coming across as a pushover even once. Do your thing and I will do mine, was his motto. The new characters on TV don't seem to be about that. Nothing irritates me more than a man who says "you are my sis/ mother/ bro/ wife hence you cannot do this because I forbid it or I know best. And that is why no matter who plays that role; the character just does not endear you like ASR did. I don't think the writers even realized how much of a strong character they were creating and why a modern/ progressive women could not help but be attracted to him.

Also, his relations with women except for Khushi were wonderfully defined. He was respectful but could not be manipulated. He stood his ground against older women, indulged his sister beautifully and let his girlfriend be. He was kind to his sister in law and when he accepted that he loved Khushi, he was the best boyfriend/lover you could ask for. I mean all the flirting scenes and remarriage scenes were to die for.

His famous scene with Nani when he tells I will not marry and I want to be with Lavanya without marriage was fantastic as was his scene with Dadi when he tells he Khushi is my wife and if she has no place in this room then I do not want to be here either or when he says Khushi can do what she wants in this house. Very seldom do you see such characterization of a man in telly serials. I have been trying to watch some soaps off late to see if any man matches up but not really. Standing their ground without being rude or being sacrificial lambs just does not happen in serials does it?

His relationship with Anjali was well define and very, very touching. He is the younger sibling and yet the way he takes care of her and how he indulges her every whim with minimal protests was super. You could argue that it was borderline incest but that only happened when the writing was bad. Initial few months it was clear that he was a devoted brother. His attitude towards his jijaji was nicely shown too. He knew jijaji was imp to sister, hence to be accorded respect. Well portrayed.

Lavanya relationship was a little more complex. She was his girlfriend who wanted to be more. Most times he did tell her be yourself. Do not change for my family. That is modern thinking. That is about accepting Lavanya for who she was initially. But when Lavanya decides to change, even then he does not interfere with her relationship with his family. It was a goal that Lavanya set up for herself. ASR did not ask her to. So there was no question of helping her or defending her. It was her choice and her cross to bear. I like that. Very precise thinking. Also I liked the way he was honest with her the minute he realized what was really happening in his heart and had accepted it.

His relationship with Payal, Mamiji, Garima, Shashi and Buaji was touched upon briefly yet once again he was respectful and caring. Who would not like that in a guy? Sure he could have defended Payal a little more, and told Mami to back off but surely that was Aakash's job.

Khushi: well this is tough relationship to talk about. This is where he was most unlike himself because he was most involved her when he did not want to be. So in way it was easy to understand his OTT behavior. While quite a lot of it was not right, and quite barbarous, at least there was a reason behind it'he did not want to fall in love and certainly not with a woman like Khushi who was his anti-thesis in every way. But even in all this nastiness, there were moments of pure guilt, regret, caring and compassion that were hard to miss and disassociate with his real nature. And when he turned around (remarriage and after) he did show Khushi how much he loved her. There were many blips (but that is poor writing again) but in the end all I can say is that much of IPK's success lies in how ASR was written.

Yes ASR was indeed a gr8 role. It was perfectly written n yes its ASR that most ppl liked n not the actor. No doubt Barun enacted flawlessly b4 kidnapping but even if there was another actor then he also would have been famous if not more than equally...

Ppl were not ready 2 accept the replacement coz they were in a habit of seeing him daily. Their eyes were accustomed 2 him. If from day 1 any other actor would have been there then v would have been accustomed 2 see him..

just a change in opinion.
for me it was initially story later Arnav and Khushi but after sometime it was just Barun and Sanaya.

The writing was amazing but after some time I watched it for Barun. He made me glued to the show.Even at worst tracks. So,i feel it was Barun for me more than ASR

And to some extent I also feel the writing for Arnav was weak compared to ASR.And Arnav was inconsistent.

I am not sure whether I would have continued after Barun's leave but I feel the justification that Barun did with his character was above perfect. And I guess thats the reason Mr.Rajan Singh once told "No one can justify ASR more than Barun"

I still remember how with least dialogues and with his expressive eyes Barun used to bring ASR into character.

The 1st laugh of ASR while everyday I used to watch Barun laughing offscreen but onscreen Barun and ASR looked so different.

The pain in eyes during Anjali's miscarriage and without any dialogues just made ASR asTHE ASR.

And I guess the best compliment an actor can get is if he is able to make the character real and Barun made ASR alive.

Your post remind me of my professor who told once "If you can forget the actor playing the character and if you can see the character more in that person acting thats a true compliment for the actor"
Gosh never thought will analyse a show this much.

and just a request to save this post from war if you wish you can change your post title to "me" istead of "us" because some of us do not share the same view.

Beautifully written...definitely this was one example of mass seduction which actually succeeded. In the real world rarely do you meet such principled, completely true to their conviction people who like to take on everyone's problems and have the weight of the world borne on their shoulders alone. Amazing man...the complete man in that sense of the word - ideal brother, perfect dad when he wanted to be, obedient grandson, dependable nephew...and of course the most wonderful husband and lover...all the while also someone who only did what he wanted to or what he thought was right? Idealistic much? Well, ASR was the archetypal Mills & Boon hero - how could he be anything else...and he certainly captured hearts...amazingly enacted by Barun Sobti of course...so Barun, you do owe ASR a debt of gratitude for giving you the dream role of a lifetime...it was a win-win from day one! And we were goners right then...

Great job dissecting!

I totally agree. Sometimes this off-screen mastis confused me, and I made the silly mistake of not distinguishing the characters they play.
Yes, the character of ASR had seduced most of us because he was the blend of east and west, so beautiful protrayed and executed.
End of the day, BS does deserve the allocades for acting, as he is nothing like ASR in real life.

Well put. He was an incredibly flawed individual, but knew his mind, had incredible drive and will power - a very masculine metrosexual!

The writing for the character was superlative until February 2012 I think. The PH cast the role well and the actor did it justice.

At least the one good thing out of this whole mess is that ASR did not die. That would have been such an ignominious end to a great character!!

Very well written, agree with you! The characterization of ASR/Arnav was very well written..Its purely guess work whether someone else could have played this part equally well, as some things are destined to happen, but yes the cvs did incorporate these qualities in the character which made women go gaga..a man with a deadly combo of a strong unwavering mind, ethical, respectful(for the most part),successful, suave and most important passionate in love and committed in a relationship..Plus it was played by barun who is rugged and hot..who can resist?!

Well written post.
But you must agree that if you are able to write reams about the character and perceive so many things about him, it is because the actor did a phenomenal job in bringing them forth. Every little nuance was expressed beautifully which is why one so feels deeply about ASR.

Yes it is well-written character but could have fallen flat in the hands of a less intelligent actor. Kudos to the makers for conceptualizing this character and kudos to Barun for making him come alive.

Good post ... But I think both ASR and Barun were responsible ... ASR got me to notice this love story and fall in love with Arshi love story progression but barun's little touches like the way he lifts up 1 eyebrow when 1 st time khushi scolds him for not telling where he had gone .. Payal mehndi day ... His powerful m.. Mm.. Main walk towards khushi after Teri Meri ...,the quick changeover of eye expressions when khushi is screaming at him for paying her fathers hospital bills .. From concern to irritation that she has misunderstood to acknowledgment of her mental state and then love and understanding ... All these are purely Barun mannerisms ...as on director couldn't have fine tuned the actor 's acting so much na ...so yes it was Barun as ASR which kept me spellbound and I am looking forward to his next work coz whether it is a blockbuster or not a successful show or not .. Barun would have acted well in it
