Awesome analysis of ASR, the character which made me glued to the show. But I think its Barun charisma, facial nuances that added the character more believable. I am watching other 2 shows where the actor character is rude/arrogant(I think everyone knows which shows I am talking about), but I am not finding their acting that appealing and convincing. After watching their acting I am finding how Barun was brilliant in small small facial nuances taking ASR character to whole new level. I don't know if some other actor have played would have become as famous as now becoz I am watching other shows so I cannot confidently say Barun lived into the character and SI is amazing too.

Agree with you. If I saw Barun on the street, i wouldn't even bother to glance at him, however, if I saw ASR, I would deinitely do a double take! Having said that, there are instances in life that are just meant to be. And I think that this role of ASR was just meant to be portrayed by Barun Sobti. No-one could have done justice to it. Although, when push came to shove, he did begin to lose his appeal (the abusive behavior AFTER confessing his love - we could almost forgive him his barbaric behavior BEFORE he confessed as he was fighting demons, I know, poor excuse for violence, but still as a progression of growth in the plot and his character, we could almost give him this morsel of forgiveness. But his behavior AFTER having cheated death, conquering familial tensions, the way he treated her threatening and abusing left a horrible taste in the mouth. And this time, the excuse that this is the way he is could not work, as he was supposed to love her more than his own life. The Sheetal track was the last nail in the coffin. No spousal realtionship would last the way he behaved. Whereas with Kushi, it went the other way, Sanaya's appeal just became stronger as she was able to carry the OTT behavior that no-one else would have been able to survive with in this industry! Of course, the blame lies entirely with the CVs as ASR was created by them. However, that is another post/topic!) I am still in love with ASR and I am sure given the chance, another actor could have done as much justice to it. It is after all, the dynamic with the female star that works it's way to the surface, and as we know, Sanaya can make ANYONE look good and hot!

It was the character - ASR that had me hooked, very well portrayed by Barun. However, I do believe another actor with the same team would have been equally successful. I am Indian, but having been born and raised in the Western world I relate ASR character to my western friends and colleagues.
I checked Barun's previous serials and did not like him in any of them. After ASR, he can do no wrong...I am a fan. I do hope he loose's his unkempt look and clean up!! :)
Also, I believe that Khushi's character was very well written to maintain ASR edginess and to eventually quell his inner demons. There were some flaws with both, but I also believe that was due to change in writers and poor follow thru!!

Great post!
ASR was an excellently written character and beautifully layered, infact the best male lead in Indian television so far but i think as much credit as the writers get the same credit should go to the actor. Barun was superb in his portrayal of ASR. He lived the character and brought it to life like no other actor could have.
The shrewd man with a golden heart was brilliantly written and enacted. By the time he changed completely to Arnav both the writing and the acting began to slacken a little and towards the end when the script was complete crap and the characters both Arnav and Khushi were terribly assassinated i think it was just SARUN that kept as glued to it.
So while i agree what was an excellently written character to start of with ended with the actor being bigger than the character both in case of Barun and Sanaya.

WOW what a wonderful analysis of ASR's character & the others that surrounded him. You define his role really well. In essence you are saying that IPK was about relationships & the way that they were portrayed & you know that you are 100% right.
I fell in love with the story first - Liked that there was this autocratic business man that looked down at this "needling" girl that was a constant irritant to his orderly life & the fact that she kept cropping up over & over to create havoc. Then I fell in love with Khushi & then ASR - then Arnav in that order.
I loved the relationships though- that was really clever of the PH - because this strengthened the story brilliantly. The first would have to be ASR & DI - so well portrayed- went a little off as you say later on but what a beautiful foundation to start with. Then there was Khushi & Buaji - latter actress is brillaint - very RUSTIC - loved her character. Payal & Khushi - real sister bonding. Aakash & Arnav - real brothers. loved it when Aakash would say BHAI. Mami - & her intercation with Phati Saree & Khoon Bhari Tang & so the list goes on - not discounting NK of course. No other drama does this networking so well. This was also part of the success behind the drama.
Best was of course the meet of the 2 characters- their continual intercation - the build of their hatred that turned to all else before the love bug took place. When the story lost it - it was the love of these 2 characters that kept the fans glued & loyal!!

Ppl were not ready 2 accept the replacement coz they were in a habit of seeing him daily. Their eyes were accustomed 2 him. If from day 1 any other actor would have been there then v would have been accustomed 2 see him..

Yes maybe we got used to Barun. But the fact is that ASR was writtern very very well and as a character very hard to ignore

just a change in opinion.

for me it was initially story later Arnav and Khushi but after sometime it was just Barun and Sanaya.

The writing was amazing but after some time I watched it for Barun. He made me glued to the show.Even at worst tracks. So,i feel it was Barun for me more than ASR

And to some extent I also feel the writing for Arnav was weak compared to ASR.And Arnav was inconsistent.

I am not sure whether I would have continued after Barun's leave but I feel the justification that Barun did with his character was above perfect. And I guess thats the reason Mr.Rajan Singh once told "No one can justify ASR more than Barun"

I still remember how with least dialogues and with his expressive eyes Barun used to bring ASR into character.

The 1st laugh of ASR while everyday offscreen I used to watch Barun laughing offscreen but onscreen Barun and ASR looked so different.

The pain in eyes during Anjali's miscarriage and without any dialogues just made ASR asTHE ASR.

And I guess the best compliment an actor can get is if he is able to make the character real and Barun made ASR alive.

Your post remind me of my professor who told once "If you can forget the actor playing the character and if you can see the character more in that person acting thats a true compliment for the actor"
Gosh never thought will analyse a show this much.

and just a request to save this post from war if you wish you can change your post title to "me" istead of "us" because some of us do not share the same view.

Ok point noted. Will change to me. Actually I do agree that for me the line between ASR and Barun blurred long ago. He did do justice to the role.. but it was very very well etched and that is what also helped him work with the character

100 percent correct!

I always felt that IPK was written for ASR. His character was built on a good soul with layers of darkness and with every episode these layers were unweaved giving us ray of hope and brightness.
But if you see the initial episodes you realize that SI was doing such a wonderful job with Khushi's character that you will start hating ASR. But slowly it changed. The character was so strong and the scenes were so well directed that you start falling for both of them Arnav and Khushi and fell in love with their lovestory. Also we can't miss the point that Barun acted this role very well.
I always felt that BS was director's and story writer's actor. He will totally surrender himself to the director and out come is an epic role. That's why I amapprehensive about his Bollywood career. He must choose his production house very well.
All the actots have potential to do wonders when given strong role and good director, but this fact does not take away any credit from BS ... Also this is also a fact that certain actors can do justice to any role and SI falls in this category. She did OTT comedy also very well just as emotional scenes. That is why IPK has been an epic story...

In the real world rarely do you meet such principled, completely true to their conviction people who like to take on everyone's problems and have the weight of the world borne on their shoulders alone. Amazing man...the complete man in that sense of the word - ideal brother, perfect dad when he wanted to be, obedient grandson, dependable nephew...and of course the most wonderful husband and lover...all the while also someone who only did what he wanted to or what he thought was right? Idealistic much? Well, ASR was the archetypal Mills & Boon hero - how could he be anything else...and he certainly captured hearts...amazingly enacted by Barun Sobti of course...so Barun, you do owe ASR a debt of gratitude for giving you the dream role of a lifetime...it was a win-win from day one! And we were goners right then...

Great job dissecting!

Anupama

Thanks. Barun become Barun for us only because of ASR. If the character had not been written in this way he would just have been another good looking actor who plays that role...

The writing for the character was superlative until February 2012 I think. The PH cast the role well and the actor did it justice.

At least the one good thing out of this whole mess is that ASR did not die. That would have been such an ignominious end to a great character!!

Yes.. masculine. That was the word I missed. That is why appealed to us about ASR too. He was a man's man.
And yes the writing went for a toss after feb. Pity...
