I've never seen a firefly in real life - have seen it just on television till now. But what I've heard about it is pretty interesting! Apparently, fireflies don't look so pretty at daytime, they look like any other ordinary insect, but come night time, and they produce their own energy to bring out light from within them. Their inner light shines through and makes their external appearance breathtakingly beautiful. Who would have thought, that a normal, un-attractive insect could look its best in total darkness? It is when the darkness, the unknown, and the blackness is present that the firefly infuses it's light diffusing the shadows, and ushers brightness, beauty and illumination!
Khushi and Arnav are just like those fireflies.
Khushi has always been full of light even in the darkest of circumstances. Her inner beauty shines through when all the chips are down, she draws energy from herself to combat the evils and dangers, and she keeps her optimism burning even in the bleakest situation.
ASR and Arnav. One is the exterior mask, while the other is the hidden light. ASR was the tough personality that instilled fear and awe in almost everyone. A man who was firm about his decisions, a no-nonsense attitude, a man who snubbed emotions, kept a tight reign over feelings and for whom profits, deals, winnings and success were all that mattered. Arnav on the other hand is the boy who was lost during his wrecked childhood. The boy, thrust into sudden responsibility hid himself in a corner of ASR, and relegated himself to being invisible within ASR's skin.
However, unknown to ASR, the true inner light of a person can't be overshadowed by even the most dominating exterior persona. The little boy inside ASR shone like a beacon of light every now and then. There were flashes of him, glimpses of him - and these were all noted by Khushi.
Darkness is when the firefly uses its inner light to brighten up the surroundings. When Arnav was captured by the kidnappers, when he was tied to the chair, when he spoke on the phone to Khushi, when he cut the ropes binding him, when he ripped apart the net to save Khushi, and when he protected her from the goons - they were all dark times, a time when it seemed like the end, the whole situation reeked of game over. Who emerged from this darkness? Who overthrew the deathly verdict? Who illuminated the way out of the kidnappers clutches? Who used their energy to protect someone else?
The little boy, the inner light - Arnav!
When Khushi opened the earthen pot which had the firefly within it, the light from it shone on both of them, transferred its own light on to them, making them look like fireflies themselves, which they are! Khushi and Arnav's inner light is what makes them who they truly are, and it is this light that drew them together. Together now, living for one another, protecting one another, giving in to one another, loving one another.
A firefly is also seen as a symbol of Hope, Illumination, Attraction, Guidance, and Awakening among others. Khushi and Arnav have maintained these qualities throughout their winding relationship.
Khushi exerted herself to find Arnav when he disappeared. She didn't give up hope. She tried tackling it on her own at first, but then got the company of Maamiji. Along with her everlasting optimism, Khushi kept looking out for clues to find her lost love. A love that she has begun to be aware of, begun to realize, and a love yet to accept ' hope is present "shayad hum ye nadaani kar baithe" this is an expression of the unsaid hope residing deep within her, knowing that the end may be futile, and yet loving him inspite of it all.
Arnav never gave up on his love for Khushi. He might have been pained that she loved another man (in his eyes), but that didn't stop him loving her. A tiny bit of hope was always there in his heart that she reciprocated his feelings. His "Khushi tumne mujhe bataane zaroori nahin samjha?" on the bridge just showed how much he wanted her to consider him as an important person in her life. A glimmer of hope that he was holding on to in his heart peeked out through that question.
Khushi and Arnav keep illuminating the darkness in each other's lives. They pull each other in varied directions, cross swords every other time, meet and part innumerable times, drive each other to the edge, sacrifice themselves for each other and put themselves before the other under trying circumstances. This constant friction has brought so many facets of their personalities before each other, thereby illuminating their hidden qualities which other people in their lives remain unaware of. Khushi in the past took the help of Arnav's shoulder to cry on when she found out about Shyam's true identity. Arnav turned to Khushi when he wondered if his mother would be proud of him. They sought out each other when either of them is facing trouble. Why is that? Because each of them know that the other is their ray of light in the dark world? Because the sense the blackened emptiness within each other? Or because it is their love for one another that makes them shine the way for each other? Take your pick...
In a strange, subtle way, Khushi and Arnav have guided each other during their relationship. Tiny, baby footsteps for sure, but they've made a lot of progress in their relationship! Look where it lead to today! Constant trial and error has made them know the other better. The situations they faced too added to this as they stumbled every now and then while going forward. Khushi has now seen the ugly side of Shyam (she still has some more dirt on him coming her way), but for now, she has finally realized that he can't be trusted. Not everyone in this world is good, not everyone cleans up their act after being given so many chances to redeem themselves, and this follows what ASR told her long back about the world and people. ASR has realized that the heart when given a chance can be strong and right. When you listen to your heart, you are listening to yourself. He listened to his heart, he knew it was right, he didn't require any proof of Khushi's innocence, his heart spoke through his voice to Khushi and brought her right where he was! Khushi has touched his heart unlike anyone else, and her genuine care, and concern for him showed him the door to letting one's guard down, because your love will always be there for you!
Khushi and Arnav have awakened to their love for one another. While Arnav has verbalized it - Khushi had at first been filled with joy, but later took it up as a hint that he was in trouble. Khushi, though aware of her love for him hasn't yet completely accepted and admitted it to herself, let alone saying it to Arnav! Verbalized or not, understood or not, their love has always directed their actions without depending on conversation. I guess the motto for Khushi and Arnav's love is "Actions speak louder than Words!" Today too, Khushi fumbles as she attempts to answer Arnav's question on how she knew he was in trouble. Arnav too feels awkward to speak about his true feelings for her again. Their love coupled with passion and desire instead pushes them together into physical intimacy.
Khushi and Arnav are fireflies for each other. Selfless souls that they are, they have always used their inner energy to brighten up each other's lives. Yes, more often than not they are in the dark, but if it weren't for that dark they wouldn't have shone so bright in each other's eyes! Their relationship is just like the firefly in the earthen pot. Their love, the light of their lives is kept safely within their hearts, born in that safe chamber, reflecting its brilliance on their face, in their eyes and smiles. The light of their love helps them see each other clearly even in the darkest of times. Their inner light channels itself through their loving, caring, thoughtful actions toward one another.

THOUGHTS
Loved the whole 'firefly' scene, easily my favourite scene in the episode! A symbol of hope and awakening - perfect for Arnav-Khushi!
The earthen pot might have some significance. All I know is that, an earthen pot or a pot, represents the womb, it is also the symbol of Mother Earth - the source of life. Could be something to do with Anjali. (Need DB and Tants to be my fireflies for this - illumination on this point please, Mummy aur Papa!!) 😆
It was nice to see Arnav bringing that light for Khushi since he knows that she's afraid of the dark, and then Khushi saying that she is no longer afraid after the firefly flew off. Arnav was by her side, and like I said, woh bhi toh firefly hai na, toh darr kis baat ki? 😉Okay, how sweet was it when Arnav turned down the light to stop being tempted at looking at Khushi's silhouette while she was changing!! Didn't last for long though, he turned off ek batti, only to see the real light of love shining over there with the moonlight over her body... plus, Khushi the firefly ki roshni bhi was radiating, bituwa could hardly not get attracted to that 'tempting light', no? 😛Oooh, the return of firm, passionate ASR!! I had a plate of bhel-puri in front of me (one of my favs.) and all I could do was watch with mouth agape at the way ASR held Khushi, caught her hand firmly as she moved away, pulled her back to him, picked her up, controlled her arm when she rolled over out of shyness... aye hayye, all wide-eyed and wide-mouthed it made me... I must've looked like a bull-frog I'm sure!! 😆 My poor bhel-puri got my attention only once the show was over! 😃
Was in the seventh heaven of dreams when Saiyyan was played... perfect lyrics for Khushi-Arnav and with the nice music, though a more mellow song would have been better... I was thinking of the title track from the movie Socha Na Tha (Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia) - that song is so melodious, soulful, and full of first love ka ehsaas!!
And yes, I'm happy there was no con... I do want a con to happen between them, lekin abhi nahin. Thank gawd those heavy kidnappers feet made thunderous noise to snap these two into attention!
I literally screamed when Arnav hit Khushi with the stick. Bechaari, second clout in the day!! I am surprised she didn't suffer from concussion after those two thwacks!
Aaah, their mutual self-sacrificing natures, their stubbornness to leave each other in danger, their instinct to protect each other... loved watching every bit of it! Both of them not ready to let the other face danger alone... awwwieee 😊
Blooper-ve... too many bloopers to count... Bush has taken care of this, gave me a solid good laugh.. thanks Bush!! 😆
And lastly, a big applause to Barun Sobti - from ASR to Arnav! 👏 👏 The expressions that let the audience know which personality is present is simply awesome!! Ek minute passionate ASR khada hai, doosra minute selfless Arnav! Mar java...
Sanaya... was it because of the BD that she couldn't bring out the subtle shyness, uncomfortableness of the situation? Apart from breathing heavily, her shyness, or reluctance toward the love of her life increasing the physical tension, failed to come across. But, she was great in the 'firefly' scene, counting the numbers - cute kiddo she was here, even arnav couldn't resist her innocence and blind belief/faith in him... she was good before he picked her up, and after the goons crackled their approach.
If you catch a firefly
and keep it in a jar
You may find that
you have lost
A tiny star.
If you let it go then,
back into the night,
You may see it
once again
Star bright.
