This is a question from the writers. PLEASE BE HONEST IN THE POLL.

The nice thing to do is read, like, and comment to show that you appreciate the hours of work the writer put in (even if you don't agree or like everything in the fanfic they want to hear it). I comment on every FF I read and will at least like if I am too busy. Though, I can't be too busy if I have obviously put in 10 minutes to read the piece am I? So I come back to comment if I can search and find the fanfic again.

I am a little put off today because of some posts I saw criticizing all writers (not talking about criticisms to any of my writings or writings in general which I love). Do you know how long it takes to PM everyone? Why sign up and waste the writer's time if you don't comment but read? We are writing and PMing for free anyway, but can't we expect comments at least?

It is funny that there is time for criticism (again not talking about people who write on your FFs saying what they didn't like, that is much appreciated) but no time for comments. I am really speaking for other writers because I thankfully have a lot of wonderful people commenting on my pieces. I comment on everything I read and feel guilty when some of my loyal readers write something I can't get around to reading pieces they PM me for. We writers appreciate our readers but it is time we are appreciated too. I am talking to YOU silent readers and likers.

On a separate note, if you don't feel like commenting don't just write "update soon" or "continue." That really hurts the writers' feelings. It says nothing to the writer. It is rather an order: Ok so I see you wrote this, WRITE AGAIN!

The writers are not looking for compliments, they want you to comment on what you think worked and didn't work. When I demand comments from my readers it is because I want to have a conversation going about the alternative to the soap I am putting up, not because I want to hear compliments and compliments alone. The idea is that you write a response about some part of the FF that spoke to you or bothered you. If you feel like compliment, no writer minds. People are all a little vain at the end of the day. But don't feel forced to compliment, feel compelled to respond.

Hello Mary,

We have recently indirectly communicated on another post. And again this time, I entirely agree with you and your opinion.

Sometimes I get writers telling me "Do not ever end at a cliffhanger. Ok. Fine. PM me next time you update." First of all, MY piece of writing, which gives ME the sole rights to end wherever the heck my heart desires.

Secondly, the lack of the word "please" really annoys me. When I was a child in kindergarten, one of the first things I was taught was: "There are four words that you must remember and use appropriately for the rest of your lives: Thank-you, sorry, excuse me, and please." & till date, I follow that. I am not really asking for a jewel if I expect you to add in a little "Please" when you request me to PM you next time around. You could also throw in a little "Thank you" if the writer made you happy with their writing.

Thirdly, I completely agree with you with regards to reading but not commenting/liking. Writers REALLY are doing this just for entertainment. We don't get paid for writing Fan Factions, we don't get awards from the show makers, we don't get called to write the next scene for IPKKND. We write because we believe it is appreciated by people.

Fourthly, I am not asking for an essay of a comment every single time. If you didn't like it, TELL ME! If you liked it but only a little bit, you can leave off a simple comment saying "Good one :)". If you REALLY liked it, shouldn't you make it obvious so I'll continue doing what I am doing?

And I couldn't agree more with your point that: "I can't be too busy if I have obviously put in 10 minutes to read the piece am I?" If you have enough time to go through numerous pages on IPKKND and FF forum PLUS time to read an update (most take about minimum 10 minutes), you surely have 5 seconds to click "Post reply" and another 55 seconds to leave a few words of encouragement.

If this is not enough, there are people who DEMAND certain kinds of writings. Writing is a creative activity. Just like you can't thrust a paintbrush and canvas in someone's hand and order "PAINT", you can't thrust a pen and paper (or keyboard of a laptop and word) in a writer's hand and say "WRITE SUCH AND SUCH." If you really honestly like a writer's style of writing and want to see them write something else, kindly request. If the writer can find the right words and can imagine things from your perspective, maybe they'll be kind enough to write. But there is NO excuse for demanding.

Now, just because I don't want to leave off on a sad note, I am honestly thankful to every reader who has commented on every FF (be it mine, yours or anybody else's). And this post does not mean I am going to send threatening emails saying "You're OFF my PM list unless you comment." It's just a matter of manners.

p.s. I am usually not this aggressive, actually never this mad. But all the criticism has made me walk to the edge.

hie,
Marybarton,
i really loved ur ff but what i didn't get is what is the difference between criticism and comment...
i mean personally i only comment saying loved it and please update soon.. but if the writers have said both positive and negative criticism is welcomed, i read the ff thoroughly like a paper and reflect upon the best and improving part...
for example in ur avenging angel i loved the imad and anjali connection but thought arhi scene could be more dramatic ... but i didn't mean to offend ...

so i just got the feeling that u are hurt by someone comment.. and i am hoping my comment didnt offend u as i am early waiting for part 10 everytume after work i check to see ur update

i voted for i read and like but too busy to comment. but the busy part is not true. I usually read and just like and dont bother to comment because one there are omg number of pages filled with comments and two because mostly everyone already said my words or thoughts. Recently i have started commenting on every os/ss/ff i read but then i forget to like :p

No no, I very much appreciated your criticism in the comment. I am not talking about criticisms to my piece. I am talking about separate posts telling all writers that we are not creative enough because we don't write stuff readers agree with.

I encourage you to comment because I gurantee that your writer reads and appreciates every comment. Yes, most say the same thing but that doesn't mean it matter less to us. We will read it on page 1 and on page 206.

Agree on all points but I am very aggressive so I do take off people I don't know. Usually they are people with zero posts who expect PMs but never write anything via PM or replies. I didn't mind at first but now that I have to message hundreds of people, I keep it to my friends and people who comment. Doesn't mean that I do no like the likers, but they can find piece posted if they like to read my pieces. It takes a second to click like and honestly PMing silent likers take a lot more than one second and I don't have the time for it. I am honest about it. I hope people don't find me rude. I read the silence as undue demand on me.

I can understand your point of view. I get the feeling that you are a more established writer than I am so you probably face this issue more than I do. But lately I have had to go and literally stalk my "outbox" to see who has requested for PM once upon a time but now doesn't even bother to open my PM about the update. Without saying much or causing a scene, I delete these people.

I agree with you about time exchange. It takes A LOT more time to write a piece AND then send out PMs than to "Like" something and leave a short comment.

If people find honesty rude, they are going to find both you and I extremely rude.
