It's like sad but romantic, because whatever he did it was for her, or so he thought.
I don't know if he was getting a death sentence for his own deeds or for someone elses, but him thinking this was the best for her was so wrong. I like how Shlok is flawed here, he had his way of thinking and that's probably why he didn't rebel and tried appealing for a lifetime imprisonment or retrial instead. Sigh, if only.
