Heyyy :) So, I'll offeR my perspective to you: I never watched any indian shows before IPK1. In fact, I used to make fun of people who watched Indian shows (no offense, people). Then I accidentally watched IPK 1 one day with a friend of mine and I absolutely despised Arnav's character. I literally watched the next few episodes for Sanaya Irani. However, as the show moved on, I started loving Barun's portrayal of Arnav. I actually have taken acting classes and let me tell you one thing, OTT acting is never considered good. Acting is done best when you can convey your emotions and expressions in a very subtle way and Barun is very good in doing that. The reason being: acting should make you think as if the situation is happening in reality. To learn more, you can read Audition by Michael Shurtleff. It is a really good book and explains the art of acting really well. All the best actors don't do OTT acting. As a neutral person, I would say that majority of Indian audience is used to actors who clearly show their expressions when the camera is double zoomed on their face with loud BGM playing. However, in other countries, the approach towards direction of tv dramas is different and the actors also play their parts very subtly. I've watched a lot of Pakistani shows and trust me, there is not a lot of shouting and changing facial expressions with a gazillion camera zooms. The most seasoned actors are able to convince the audience to connect with their character without any OTT acting. Just to give Barun a fair chance, watch him in Tanhaiyan. He has done a fabulous job in it. Even in IPK3, some of the really impactful scenes IMO were the first time he enters Vashisht haveli: you can feel the pain he is feeling, the poetry he recited for Chandini, the hatred on his face in the dupatta burning scene, all the nani-advay scenes where his hidden emotions really do come out and many, many more.
But I guess, to each their own, It is completely okay for you to have an opinion regarding him or to like or dislike him. It depends on the kind of actors you are used to watching. Also, if you do get a chance, try watching his movie Tu Hai Mera Sunday. He has done an amazing job in that as well. Lastly, just to alleviate any concerns, I'm not a blind fangirl. I live in Canada and am doing my Masters currently and I barely have time to spend on any activities other than school so for me, to take out 30 min or so each day is a really big deal and I only spend time on stuff which I think is worth investing my time in and I really do think that entertainment wise, Barun's acting is worth it because he i naturally very good at it. The plus point is that he's also a great human being at heart which makes me feel good about supporting him :)

Anyhow, long story short, try to follow the show regularly if you can and you'll get accustomed to his acting style. Its a bit different than others so maybe you just need to get used to it. If not, then i really hope you can find a show that you enjoy watching. After all, its just entertainment, right?

All the best to you :)

Voice modulation doesn't mean one only has to change a bit of the texture to sound different. That's a given. It's the change in the fabric of the voice and diction. I have so much problem with that. Actors must necessarily master dialogue delivery and shift in the fabric of voice. That one small shift while crying isn't it. It's a balance of forcefulness, good diction and constant motion.

Clearly you know a lot about acting , I don't really know anything about the science behind acting ... I know Barun Sobti is not a trained actor, so obviously many of the things you mentioned might be problem areas for him... He goes with what the director asks and what he feels the character should do ...similar to many actors on TV. Then why is he so big ? I guess he is lucky or just maybe people like me simply like the way he acts ( no matter how terrible he is in your book )... It's a matter of heart over head for millions of us and he tugs our hearts like no other actor does. A heart wants what a heart wants ... And we want to see him regularly no matter how shoddy the screen play is or how ridiculous an ad it is for sunglasses under water.

For love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love; Cannot be killed or swept aside. 😆 ( Lin-Manuel Miranda during his Tony acceptance ) 🤗

I'm not indian, and i tried to watch all kinds of shows and films all over the world.. American, british, mexican, turkish, arabic, etc..
Honestly Barun is the only actor that leaves a strong impact in me everytime i watch him and his acting👏
It's phenomenal! By one look to his expressive eyes i can relate to the character!
I really can't understand your opinion and can't take it seriously, i really can't beleive that there is someone can't enjoy his brilliant acting!
But there is always an exception, that is you!
Anyway that's your opinion.. And that's mine..
Hope in the future you will change and improve your taste😉, because he is an extraordinary actor, and for me the best actor i have ever seen!
Peace 😊

Same here ...I'm neither Indian nor do I speak Hindi and I had never seen any Hindi serial before IPK1. I'm a sci fi fan , watched LOST ( 2004-2010) and was looking for something to watch while recuperating from surgery ...and I stumbled upon Barun Sobti and IPK 1 ... and I totally fell in love with this lanky brooding guy with awkward gait and what not ... and then I watched BHPH and my mind was blown ...what a versatile actor he is ... Maybe I'm a simpleton and don't know how to analyze acting but I sure can recognize Barun Sobti's universal appeal ... He is simply fabulous as a person as well as an actor ( to me and to millions )

I am Bengali. Why do you think I won't understand this?
Tagging me 'insane' because I don't agree with your opinion of Barun's acting?
😆 Also, the fact that many of you are not and have not been acquainted with Indian television is visible. But yes, nobody knows what attracts someone to some actor and what repels them. Personally I feel most Gul Khan romantic M&B stuff gives OTT popularity to unskilled people but others believe otherwise. I look forward to seeing his films and other acting sometime though, since he is claimed to be "the best actor" in Indian Television industry. We'll see how he does in future, or even in this show. I maintain that he is a fluke because his acting is nothing special to me. You think otherwise. Guess time will tell.

I actually don't see the subtlety in his acting. Subtle is something else. Subtle is something like Sonakshi in Lootera, this is just a severe lack of emotions. I neither care for, nor ask for OTT acting. But what Barun is doing here, isn't subtle IMO. It's just stilted with bad dialogue delivery. But yes, thank you for respecting my opinion and I'd try watching if he does something different in future and hopefully, my opinion will change for the better. Look, I don't question people supporting him. It's their prerogative. I also feel like I reserve the right to dislike someone's acting. Thank you for this post overall. It made me think more than most other posts did so yeah.
