Thanks for the update - I too missed much of the episode!

I watched a bit of the introduction - Brihaspati & Tara enter the court of the devas, and are welcomed by them. All of them do charan-vandana of both Brihaspati & Tara. Chandra does it for Brihaspati as well, but for Tara, he doesn't exactly touch her feet, but casts a spell there which gets her feet above the ground. Tara notices it and wonders to herself later why Chandra didn't touch her feet like everyone else did.

Later, Chandra was in Rohini's room, and imagined that he was seeing Tara, and praised her beauty. Rohini was impressed, until @ the end, Chandra let out Tara's name. (This was the point where I stopped, and switched to the cricket match that was going on)

I too thought that the reason the moon goes thru phases was due to a curse from Ganesh, so obviously, they've modified the story here to attribute credit to Shani dev. But didn't Chandra have, what, 27 wives - all daughters of Daksha? So did Shani divorce them all from him, leaving him w/ only Rohini?

I also agree that Shani's not saving Tara was strange, given that he saved Achala from Kama. I didn't know about the background story about Budh. In the episode, I thought that the Devas assured Brihaspati that Budh was indeed his son, not Chandra's. And I think the Budh planet could have been born to Brihaspati as well - didn't need Chandra's helpful intervention.

In today's episode, Shani started off by describing how a woman, upon her marriage, takes birth a second time, w/ all her dreams, hopes & aspirations poised to get either fulfilled, or broken. Once she marries, she embraces a new identity, new family, new culture & customs. Which is why, the right to choose her hubby is her birthright and can't be taken away. The showcase today is Visakha, the princess of Vidarbha.

Princess Visakha was a devotee of Shani, and was praying to him to get the husband of her desire. Her father king Bhyumanyu comes in, and tells her that he's selected a ruler he wants to give her to - King Virbhadra, and asks her to choose him. Visakha refuses, angering her father. At the assembly hall, Visakha passes all the kings, and ignores each of them. Virbhadra is eyeing her lustfully. When she arrives in front of him, he is lost in thought, but ignores him. He is shocked. Then she sees a statue of someone and goes and garlands it. She then leaves the assembly. Shani praises Visakha for asserting her rights and garlanding the one she chose.

The kings are furious, and Visakha's father apologizes to them. He then goes inside, and tells Visakha that the reason he asked her to marry Virbhadra was so that Virbhadra doesn't ravage his kingdom and making widows of several women and ruining several lives - he concedes that he sacrificed her rights for the well being of his subjects. He returns w/ Visakha and tells them that she will choose one of them. The kings all get up, and say that she's made her choice, now they will decide who marries her. Just then, Shani enters, and watches them, and says that they all have to pay for their sins. All the kings draw their swords and start fighting each other, and at the end of it all, all of them - except Virbhadra were dead. Virbhadra claims victory, and demands that Visakha be handed over. When Visakha refuses, he draws his sword and severs the head of the statue. 😲 Visakha is upset and runs to it, and Virbhadra grabs her. Shani in his disguise tells him that for 3 days, he should not force Visakha to do anything against her will, or else, he will suffer.

Shani then takes the head of the statue and asks Bhyumanyu whose statue it is, but the king doesn't know. He then goes to a sculptor, who is working on something else. The sculptor is shocked to see it, and asks Shani who did it. Shani tells him a sinner did it 😆 and asks him when did he last see the subject of this statue? The sculptor tells Shani that this is the statue of someone named Surajbhan who was a hero among folks, and once saved some women who were being chased by Virbhadra's guards. Surajbhan was posing for the statue when on seeing this, he intercepted the guards and defeated them. However, he was then hit on the head and knocked unconscious and taken away. Shani tells him that he understands where he was taken, and flies back to heaven.

Virbhadra drags away Visakha to his palace, and asks his priest to marry them. Sitting in heaven, Shani is furious. When Virbhadra is given the sindur and takes a handful of it to fill Visakha's maang, Shani glares @ it and the sindur catches fire. Visakha is saved 👏 Shani's voice reminds Virbhadra of his warning to him. Virbhadra decides that he needs to get rid of the person whose statue it is, and says to himself that he knows where Surajbhan is.

Shani then searched the gaols and persuaded a guard to let him distribute rotis to the slave prisoners. When he saw someone he thought might be Surajbhan. He calls him by name, and the man turns, surprised @ how Shani knew, and his roti falls, and Shani gives it back to him. Shani then divines what happened to him? Actually, what had happened was that after taking him prisoner, Virbhadra did some tantric puja in which he robbed Surajbhan of his youth, thereby himself becoming what he currently is, and becoming aged. Kaldevi told Virbhadra that he can get his age back if he ever wants it. Virbhadra laughs off the idea and orders Surajbhan to be put into jail.

Shani asks Surajbhan whether he never tried to get his youth back. Surajbhan tells him that all he wished for was a quick death, and Shani tells him that those words don't befit a brave hero like him. He tells him that princess Visakha of Vidharbha has married him, and that Virbhadra is trying to forcibly marry her, so Surajbhan needs to do his husbandly duty. Surajbhan asks him how will he fight, when he's so old and deprecit? Shani tells him that the most important strength he'd have would be the determination to win.

Just then, a guard enters and tells Surajbhan that he's to be executed tomorrow 😡 The next day, Surajbhan is led into Virbhadra's chamber, and is about to be executed when Shani comes and stops him. He tells Virbhadra that if he wants to marry Visakha, he needs to get her to love him. He whispers something in his ear. Virbhadra offers Surajbhan a last wish b4 he dies, and Surajbhan tells him that he wants to fight & die @ his hands. Virbhadra orders weapons to be given to him, but Shani gives Surajbhan his own trishul - his dand-astra, and says that this will put paid to all of Virbhadra's sins. He then announces the battle, and Virbhadra attacks. Surajbhan, despite his age, fends off his attacks and trips Virbhadra, who then orders his guards to finish him, but Surajbhan defeats them as well. The fighting b/w Surajbhan & Virbhadra resumes, but soon, Virbhadra is thrown off and lands @ Shani's feet.

Shani tells him that if he is to have any chance of winning, he needs to get back his age. Virbhadra balks, saying that there is no way he would do that. Shani tells him that if he is killed, his youth would be worthless to him 😆 Virbhadra then invokes Kaldevi and gets back his old age and beard, while Surajbhan gets back his youth. Visakha is surprised to see this. Shani then orders Surajbhan to complete the job, and Surajbhan spears Virbhadra, who falls dead.

Shani then introduces Surajbhan to Visakha, who notices the resemblence b/w him & the statue. She goes up to him and greets him. Later, the 2 of them, as well as Bhyumanyu are doing a puja of Shani dev. Bhyumanyu praises Shani for ending the tyranny of Virbhadra. Visakha praises him for upholding the rights of women to choose their husbands. Surajbhan praises him for restoring everything of his out of a dead statue. Then they all chant slogans of Shani dev ki jai, and on that happy note, the episode ends.

Comments: I was glad that unlike past episodes, like that of Princess Narmada, in this case, the princess was allowed to choose her hubby & wasn't sacrificed to save the entire populace. If only Shani had been around Bheeshma, Duryodhan & Samba. I was a tad amused by Visakha garlanding Surajbhan's statue - reminded me of Samyogita garlanding Prithviraj Chauhan. I thought that for those times, garlanding the statue of a non-existent person or someone who was dead was a good way to avoid marrying if one so desired 😈

The scene where Virbhadra was about to marry her was scary, but thankfully, this wasn't one of the saas-bahu soaps, and Shani got to save her in time. I was surprised that @ the end, after Surajbhan got back his youth, Shani instantly instigated him to slay Virbhadra, making the latter realize that he had been tricked by Shani. But I'm not sorry that it happened to a villain like Virbhadra.

The theme of today's episode was about friendship. Shani explains how it is one of the great relationships that is formed by common values and situations, which is why a betrayal of friendship is an unforgivable offense.

A king named Ashwabahu was testing his strength by having 2 sets of horses tug @ him from both sides. In the meantime, soldiers are ransacking a village on the banks of a river, and killing a lot of them. In the meantime, the horses finally give up, and Ashwabahu is triumphant. Some soldiers come to him to tell him that his orders have been carried out. Ashwabahu remarks that Chandrika would be pleased to hear that.

In the palace, a princess, presumably Chandrika, is dancing and entertaining some guests, who are awestruck @ her performance. Suddenly, some arrows fly around her, killing all her guests 😡 It is Ashwabahu. He catches her by the hair & tells her that she was under orders not to entertain anybody but him. Chandrika retorts that as the queen, she has the right to entertain anybody she likes. Ashwabahu tugs on her hair some more, but she tells him that while she could physically force her, she couldn't win over her heart. Ashwabahu lets go of her and she goes and picks up an empty pot, brings it to him, telling him that she had prepared it w/ a wish in her mind that a certain village be emptied, and then drops it in front of him, shattering it. Ashwabahu picks up one of the pieces and squeezes it, making himself bleed 😲 He tells her that he's shed a lot of blood to satisfy her whims 😡 Just then, a guard arrives and tells Ashwabahu that the dharamsabha has summoned him.

At the dharamsabha, the villagers who had fled are complaining to the head of the dharamsabha that Ashwabahu has been persecuting them. Ashwabahu arrives and they go silent. The head of the sabha asks Ashwabahu why he did what he did, and Ashwabahu tells him that he had ordered them to vacate the village, and only punished those who flouted the order. The head tells him that as king, he's supposed to serve the people, and if he doesn't, the same sabha that made him king could revoke his title. Ashwabahu is about to draw his sword, but stops, and leaves, after telling the head that he would be removed.

At his palace, he is fuming at what the sabha told him, while the head of the sabha, in his private puja room, prays to Shani for help. Shani says that Ashwabahu's sins have caught up w/ him, and now, his time of punishment begins. In the meantime, Ashwabahu is shattering pots that are there in his palace, when Shani arrives in his disguise. He tells him that he knows what is bothering him, and even shows him his future, in a crystal ball, In it, Ashwabahu is being beaten by his subjects. Ashwabahu is frantic, but Shani tells him that the solution to his problem is if he could get a true friend of his to be the new pramukh of the dharamsabha who'd support his every decision.

Ashwabahu gets flashbacks of his gurukul, where his co-student would help him in many ways, like giving him extra food if he was hungry, washing his clothes for him in addition to his own, etc. Accordingly, he visits the home of Kapila, which is that friends name. Kapila is weaving something when Ashwabahu enters, and they embrace. Kapila reminds him that he never gave him the cow he promised him, and Ashwabahu apologizes, but tells him that he has better things in store for him. Shani remarks that he will make Kapila the instrument w/ which to punish Ashwabahu.

Ashwabahu takes Kapila to the dharam sabha and tells the committee that Kapila is his new handpicked pramukh. Shani arrives there in disguise and supports the king's suggestion, suggesting that the pramukh test Kapila to find out whether he is worthy. The pramukh asks Kapila a couple of questions whose answers from Kapila impress him, and he hands over to Kapila the head of the committee.

Back @ his palace, Ashwabahu orders his commanders to kill all dissidents to his rule, get all the beautiful maidens of the kingdom for his service, and loot as much wealth as they can. Kapila & his sabha members are walking on the streets, when they see some citizens being tortured by the soldiers. He asks them what has happened, and Shani appears and tells him that they were being tortured for complaining about the king to his sabha, for resisting expulsion orders and for refusing to let their daughters be taken away for the kings service.

Kapila barges into Ashwabahu's chamber and yells his name. Ashwabahu, who's w/ Chandrika, is shocked, and gets up and asks him whether he's forgotten how to address his king. Kapila confronts him for all the persecution he's doing of his subjects. Ashwabahu reminds him that it's only @ his behest that Kapila is where he is, otherwise he was not even worthy of living in his kingdom. As for friendship, how can there be friendship b/w a king & a beggar?

In his sabha alone, Kapila is furious that Ashwabahu has disgraced their friendship, and takes off his headgear, presumably planning to quit. Shani arrives and tells him that as the head of the dharam sabha, it's his duty to protect dharam in any way, even if it means taking up weapons despite being a brahmin. And as a friend, it's his dury to bring the friend on the path of dharam.

Ashwabahu is @ the city center ready to start killing people, when Kapila suddenly arrives and defies him. Ashwabahu tells him not to interfare, but Kapila throws off his cloak & draws his sword. A battle begins b/w the 2 of them, @ the end of which Ashwabahu falls to the ground and Kapila's sword is in his face. Shani stops them and tells them that Ashwabahu wronged his subjects, so they are the ones who should punish him.

The subjects begin beating him, but Ashwabahu gets up & flees, just like was shown to him by Shani. Finally, after running for a while, he finds Kapila in front of him, and begs him to save him for the sake of their old friendship. Kapila tells him that he won't punish a friend, but he would punish a sinner. Saying this, he plunges his sword into Ashwabahu, and the king falls down and dies.

At his abode, Shani praises Kapila for showing the true value of friendship.

Comments:

I found the theme of this episode a bit strange, given how it seemed to be more about the betrayal of a friendship than a demonstration of one. In the first place, the original friendship seemed pretty one-sided - Kapila washing Ashwabahu's clothes, giving him his food, etc. In that context, it was funny of Ashwabahu to call Kapila a beggar. Also, given how Shani had told him to bring his friend to the path of dharam, I thought Kapila might try to reform him, rather than kill him. Maybe Kapila could have given Karna some pointers about how to behave w/ Duryodhan.

I found Chandrika weird. On one hand, she wants her husband to eviscerate whole villages for her pleasure, but on the other, she insists on entertaining whoever she pleases, in defiance of her husband's wishes. I wish she too had been punished more than simply being widowed.

The ending was a bit abrupt - they could have shown either Kapila or the original pramukh being crowned the king as Ashwabahu's successor, and Chandrika leaving the palace - either widowed, or eloping w/ someone else.

Thanks for the update, Vrish. The update does sound a bit strange...and this Ashwabahu sounds bipolar.
Is this a true story of fiction?

Thanks for the updates Vrish...missed all the MSDK episodes following the Tara-chandra episode... Btw the story of Visakha sounded really interesting... I tried to watch it... but whenever I try to watch a video, the video gets stuck & a message comes like the anti2dvag stopped working & the screen goes wild & crazy...😡 I can't watch anything on youtube now😭😡

The episode of Aswabahu was strange... agree with you. Didn't sound like a story of friendship coz the friendship sounded one-sided only from Kapila's side while Aswabahu was just using him for his selfish motives... Chandrika... didn't understand her character all.

So now the trend of not getting killed under Shani's punishment cycle has been broken... Looks like now everyone get killed in all the episodes😆

I'm back, and thanks for your comments. Hope your exams went well, and agree w/ much of what you wrote above. (LJR, most of the above episodes are a mix of mytho & fiction, since Shani's insertion in a lot of them ain't there in original texts. Last weeks episode is an example - continue reading)

Last week's episode was about Dyu, Bheeshma's previous incarnation as the 8th Vasu, in which the Vasus were cursed by Rishi Vashistha. For the original account as in the Mahabharata, see here.

Anyway, to summarize what they showed last week, some rishis were enjoying a dance program hosted by Narada, when suddenly the Vasus stormed the place. They were furious that the front row seats hadn't been reserved for them. Narada tried to explain the hierarchy, in which the various rishis got seated first, the Devas next and the Vasus last. This infuriated the Vasus and they threw the rishis out.

The Vasus narrated what they did to their mother, and she supported them. However, their father Dharamraj disapproved of their activities. In the meantime, the Vasus started tormenting rishis for their own sadistic pleasure. Disgusted, Dharamraj approached Shani and asked him to punish them fully, and not spare them on account of them being his sons 👏

The Vasus are engaged in persecuting rishis when Shani intervenes & saves the latter, and strikes them down. They demand to know what he's doing, and he warns them. The Vasus mock his warning, as usual. Later, the Vasus go into an arena where some apsaras are dancing, and the apsaras are disgusted by their advances & leave. Shani decides that the time has come to punish them, and he goes there, and gives them an idea.

Shani points to earth to sage Vashistha's ashram, where he has his divine cow (I'm forgetting whether it was Kamadhenu or Nandini, but anyway, read on) and suggests that they demonstrate their power by stealing that cow, which would give them everything they desire. 😈 The Vasus visit Rishi Vashistha on earth and tell him that they are hungry, but that he probably is done for the day. Vashistha declines and asks them to wait, and goes to his cow and asks her to delay her eating and give the Vasus what they need. A number of food items appear, and Vashistha's desicples feed them. The Vasus are satisfied that Shani was not lying and that cow indeed had the powers he described.

That night, when the Vasus were in the process of stealing the cow, Shani appeared b4 Vashistha and warned him that his hosts were sinning against him. Vashistha is shocked and asks how, and Shani advises him to go out & check. Sure enough, the Vasus were leading her away. Vashistha got furious and accused them of violating their status as guests, and disgracing their families in the process, and cursed that they'd be born repeatedly on earth, while eldest, who should have stopped them, participated in it, and would have to serve out the full punishment. The Vasus begged for forgiveness and Vashistha said that it would only be broken if they found a mother willing to kill them the moment they were born.

The Vasus then went to Ganga and asked her to do them that favor. So in Hastinapur, she married Shantanu and gave birth to all of them, and drowned the first 7. The 8th, as is well known, was Gangeya/Devratha/Bheeshma, and the serial cues through the Mahabharata to the point where Bheeshma was downed on the bed of arrows.

After Bheeshma died, the 8th Vasu returned to join his brothers, and presented himself b4 Shani. Shani told them that they had all served out their punishment, and from now on, would fulfill their purpose in life. He summoned Agni & asked him to take them all as his attendants, and that they were to be involved in all the yagnas that he performed.

Comments: Since this incident is right out of the Mahabharata, aside from the parts about Shani and the reason about why the Vasus went to steal the cow, I suggest discussing it in this thread on the Dwapar Yuga in the DBSK forum. I will be posting tonight's episode update hours later.

Which - the one about Bheeshma? The part about the Vasus being cursed by Vashistha for stealing Nandini is (the text has Nandini, but I still don't recall what the episode mentioned). However - the part that preceded it - the Vasus being unhinged and Shani inciting them to steal Nandini - is more likely than not made up.
