I think at the moment, I’m able to acknowledge that his pain is valid. But I’m still not able to feel bad for him.
Maybe it’s because of the way they wrote him or how I’m used to August Babu’s emotional side. Agastya didn’t really have a person to seek comfort in until Imlie. But when he was alone, we were able to experience these moments where he would let his tears of frustrations flow. As an audience, it made us connect to him more, we were able to empathize with him. Sai was also something else during those scenes.Surya so far seems to be the kind to suppress his emotions until they build up, only for them to explode out on a rare blue moon when he’s had enough. I wish we got more scenes of him struggling with things on his own. Who does Surya have in his life he can truly call his own? He was closest to his sister and she too will cause issues for him. It was disheartening to see Surya question Malti today. He can no longer pour his heart out to Anjali coz that would be wrong.
My two favourite scenes of his are actually the ones where we see him express himself in the rawest way possible: the outburst in the hut and today’s scene where he snapped at Imlie. It’s for one an amazing portrayal of Sai’s acting skill but also something that helps us understand as an audience that Surya isn’t an empty gol gappa but a samosa with feelings. Both of Surya’s more intense emotional scenes are with Imlie, for obvious reasons. I’m lowkey looking forward to the day, if he ever does, where he actually cries in front of her. There’s something so vulnerable about a man allowing himself to cry, especially in families where they aren’t allowed to show themselves as “weak”
I have pointed this out before as well that they made Surya ten times more majboor than Agastya. Yeh bechara mandir ki ghanti ki tarah bajta jaa raha hai.
