I think in addition to the intent of getting Aparna to value Imlie and her good heart the makers at this point in the story seemed to want to move the Adi Imlie equation from a soulful connect to also one of physical attraction and the start for looking for further intimacy for Adi at least. To me it seems like they waited for Adi to tell the truth to Malini and for him to be convinced she is in Manali with her bf and then sort of justify to himself maybe that it was ok to now feel the physical aspect of the attraction which is also essential for a normal marriage and was in a way missing a bit with this couple. While it is their soul connect that makes this story brilliant and unique - somewhere along the way they would have needed to develop the romantic need - otherwise something would have been lacking. I feel thats what they attempted to do with this sequence. Adi definitely felt more like GM - but then GM is such an ostentatious and flamboyant dancer - he always overshadows Adi in all of his dancing scenes. Very seldom have they managed to showcase purely Adi in a dance sequence. Maybe the welcome back to Imlie from hospital sequence was his most subdued and the later part of the PG dance with the dhol. Other dance sequences always have GM's distinctive stamp. Initially his slightly OTT dancing style used to disconcert me but now i am used to his style and enjoy it for how diff it is from other male leads dancing styles.
They could have gone less filmy and shown more of a nuanced passion for Imlie by Adi - but hey at least standalone it was enjoyable and no harm done hopefully in the storytelling in the long run.
