Naah. I don't think Remus was what you call an "extra". An extra could move on from the death, he could betray...somewhat like Peter Pettigrew.
Don't forget the risk taken by the others when they knew he was a werewolf. If he was just an "extra" they wouldn't have done that. Peter Pettigrew was more of an "extra". They could have easily done off without him.
And you see in the end of the 3rd book during the Remus-Sirius confrontation, they kinda complete each others' words and come to a conclusion about Pettigrew without actually saying out everything in full sentences. This itself proves that their bond and friendship is pretty strong.
I guess Sirius got more importance 'coz he was the first father figure in Harry's life. Harry had someone who cared for him & wrote to him from OUTSIDE Hogwarts for the first time.
And in the 6th book Harry does expect letters and all from Remus, but doesn't get any 'coz he is erm living with his own kind and all.
And Remus is also important, he gets a wife and child. 😍 I think Sirius was more of a father+brother figure to Harry while Remus was a favourite Uncle types.
You'll know that both are equally important. You'll understand what am talking about in the last novel. :-)

^^ Rowling wrote what she wanted for the first book, and that became famous, didn't it? Authors aren't servants to the people, so though they may take fans' interests under consideration, the ultimate decision falls to them, not the fans. Plus, almost everyone I know loved DH and the ending, it's just our personal perception whether we like it or not, but we need not generalize that to everyone.

Plus, I don't think it had a 'happily ever after' ending...the epilogue was neither happy nor tragic. It was just normal, and kind of expected since 19 years after Voldemort died, people would have moved on with their lives. None of them were jumping around with joy, they were just calm and collected as they sent their children off to Hogwarts, like every normal parents.
I liked the epilogue, because it showed us that they did indeed move on with their lives and re-built the wizarding world so that it once again bore semblance to how it used to be. Ever after war, life goes on, and I think this is the message JKR was trying to convey through the epilogue. It didn't seem like a cliche, 'happily ever after' ending at all.

The epilogue depicts everyone happily married with kids to their high school sweethearts. To me that is the quintessential, happily ever after that is typical of fairy tales. Most of the time things don't fall in place so easily. Teenagers rarely end up with first loves and crushes. They still have a lot of growing up to do and life takes people in different directions. Along the way there's a coming of age into adulthood experience, heartbreaks, tragedies, love – lost and found. The epilogue completely bypasses all that and writes in a perfect life for everyone. In my opinion that is overtly happy and positive.

Moreover, a definitive epilogue defeats the purpose of 'fantasy' fiction. Fantasy fiction is meant to be open ended and non-conclusive. It is supposed to always have room for flights of fantasy, for vivid imagination of the author as well as readers to continue the story in their minds and chart any different course for the characters. Laying out what happens completely kills the fantasy in fantasy fiction.

That being said, after watching the J.K Rowling story on Lifetime last night – I actually understand why J.K Rowling had that epilogue. Her own life did not have happy endings. Her marriage did not work out and the girl who once dreamed of going to Oxford was being humiliated as a single mom living on state welfare. Her mother passed away well before Rowling was even close to achieving her dreams. Ultimately giving perfection to the lives of her characters was a way for Rowling to achieve that sense of fulfillment and perfection that she never had in her own life. It is her way of achieving her own personal fantasies.

Maybe that's exactly why she did it - she knew that the series had come to a close and if she hadn't ended it conclusively, people would have started pressurizing her to write another one. And frankly another one would have been a mistake and I think JKR knows that too.

It is true that opposites sometimes only attract in books and movies, but like Janaki here stated, Ron and Hermione might be different from eachother but they are not completely the opposite of eachother. (I know I'm contradicting myself, lol, but now that i think about it ... )

When the first movie got released, I hadn't started reading the books. I just watched and I really did like Harry and Hermione. But when I started reading the books, i could no longer form that image of harry and hermione as a couple. It's basically just a matter of perception. I'm completely okay with people shipping harry/hermione or even harry and draco! 😆
In fact, I shipped Harry/Luna quite a lot before. But it didn't happen. 😔 oh well ... 😆
About JKR ending the story on a positive note, seriously people, how much more tragedy do you want us to endure? Fred, Severus, Colin, Lupin, Tonks, Sirius and now you think that she should have killed someone from the trio or possibly luna? 😳

I'm not too fond of Harry/Ginny. To me Ginny is a weak and underdeveloped character. I think Harry/Luna would have made a lot more sense. I think Luna helps Harry significantly and is pivotal to his character growth. However, the most awesome of them all would have been Harry/Draco.

You have your say, I have mine. In my opinion, harry and hermione are more like siblings. And I don't give two flying caps if someone wrote a book about hermione's feelings. LOL. JKR has written romance. But it wasn't her top priority. It was like a tiny sub-plot. She didn't give romance that importance and frankly, It's really not the couples i care about. But if she decides to write romance novels (which i don't think will happen :p) then i bet they're going to be awesome. You cannot judge her by what she wrote in harry potter because she was obviously too wrapped up in the actual story.
And it sort of angers me how you say that killing lupin, tonks, SIRIUS, DUMBLEDORE wasn't important! I'm saying it again, DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH IT HURTS TO LOSE SOMEONE YOU LOVE? What you wrote sounds so insensitive. Don't you know what Sirius meant to harry? What dumbledore meant to him? They were like his parental figures. It's not enough that he lost so much in the begining (his parents) now you want him to lose his best friends? That just sounds really really insensitive.

I've liked Harry and Ginny but for me, Ginny isn't that developed either. The only time it really felt that Ginny went to hogwarts was in the sixth book, i think. Yes, harry and draco will be awesome 🤣
