Image Log only the books you finish or DNF from November 1, 2025 to November 30, 2025. The logging will start and end at midnight whatever time zone you're in. The logging will officially stop at midnight December 1, 2025, 11.59 EDT/December 1, 2025, 9:29 PM IST.

Image Log books within 3 days of finishing / DNFing them. Please DO NOT log pages that you intend to read or page counts of books that are in your TBR. ONLY FINISHED PAGES SHOULD BE LOGGED!

Image Add the book title/ author/ format and page count to the post you have reserved in your team’s thread (which will be posted by your captain). You will edit this post as you keep reading. You will also be adding the same page counts in the Google sheet that will be shared in your team’s thread.

Image Wherever possible, please use Amazon’s page counts for logging pages. For ebooks and audiobooks, use Kindle page counts. For paperbacks and hardcovers, use paperback page counts. If you cannot find the book on Amazon, you can use other legitimate sources.

Image For online fiction, use word count divided by 300 to log pages.

Image If you DNF, or if you are continuing a book from a previous month, log only the pages you’ve read this month. You can use percentage read (at the point of DNF) for ebooks, actual page numbers for paperbacks and for audiobooks, log pages based on number of hours read (40 pages per hour at normal speed)

Image You are responsible for tracking your own reading. Please keep an accurate log of the books you finish. We trust you to be honest. And while we understand the spirit of competitiveness, please also remember that the Reading Challenge is designed to motivate you to read more and beat your own personal counts, so you are competing with yourself!

Image Lastly, have fun! This is not meant to stress you out, or cause a burn out, it's meant to nurture a love of reading. Read what you can, how much you can, when you can!

Happy to be with you smiley1 hello to our team smiley20 (page count: 4666)

Glasgow Rangers GIFs | TenorStream caitlin | Listen to Rangers playlist online for free on SoundCloud

and here my November-page..

осень - Kostenlose animierte GIFs - PicMix

Originally, I wanted to decline because of the amount of work I have coming up towards the end of the year, but now I'm glad to participate after all... and that's because of the name of the team I'm in.

Glasgow, football, the Glasgow Rangers... it inspired me to look for crime novels related to Glasgow or to authors born/living in Glasgow. I already know Scottish writers like Val McDermid and Ian Rankin (latter making me familiar with Edinburgh through Rebus and his investigations, former giving me the endearing character of Tony Hill)... now I did research for writers not yet read... and I found more than I expected smiley1

My first choice are two books of Louise Welsh who lives in Glasgow (teaching creative writing): her debut novel (2002) and a sequel to it 20 years later. Like her fellow writer Val McDermid, also Welsh is queer, so it isn't astonishing that her protagonist in both novels is a gay auctioneer called Rilke (like the German poet), a man with his own "code of moral values", not always likable and very curious. The second protagonist is Glasgow.

1) The Cutting Room (317 p.) - A part of Rilke's job is to clear houses of deseased persons for the auction house of which he is an enployee. When doing that - in a posh part of Glasgow - he comes across some really disturbing photos (quoting Welsh: "yeah, it's a nasty book") and he wants to know more about what they show (the real murdering of a woman or a staged one). The idea of "what lies underneath" is very much a part of Scottish Gothic (a quite dark, even gory kind of crime/thriller novels with Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as a defining example). ... "dark" and "darkness", but also humour are ingredients of a writing, I thoroughly enjoyed... A pivotal moment in the book is a nocturnal police raid in a park where Welsh's themes of transgression, hypocrisy and rules of law collide and whenever a street or part of Glasgow was mentioned, I looked it up on Google maps smiley1.

Why a sequel to the debut novel after 20 years? Quoting Louise Welsh: "The World has really changed, you know... we have the possibility of equal marriage. You don't have to get married but you can if you wish to. And it struck me, you know, 20 years on from writing the Cutting Room, that I wanted to explore some of these changes. Because there are other ways of being as well. When Rilke initially comes on the scene, mobile phones have started, but there's no Tinder, there's no Grindr, there's no hooking up through the internet. There's no chemsex, there's none of this stuff. So I wanted to have a look in at how the world has changed and how Rilke would be in that landscape. So I've written another book. I've gone back to Rilke's world... and I've really enjoyed it."

2) The Second Cut (381 p) - Although there is murder (Rilke's friend), this novel has other shades of darkness. This time, the connection is between this murder, the clearance of a house far away from Glasgow to the Glasgow-world of crime families and drug & sex orgies. ... Again, I enjoyed what I read, Welsh's writing of characters, situations, motivations and of Glasgow. smiley1

Read and listened to a lot of books but there was no leisure time to write about them here. However I promised to Leenaaa to take this weekend time out to give the notes about the books I 'consumed' smiley1 ... So second choice had been three books written by the Scottish writer Christopher (Chris) Brookmyre who was born an raised in Glasgow. Two of the books completely are based in Glasgow (including narration about the Rangers), the third one has different locations but unites zhr main people of the two previous books. I loved all the three - I adore dark humour, intelligent plots and fluent writing.

1) A Big Boy Did It And Ran Away (510 p) - Two old friends from Glasgow, now with very different lives as adults (one a teacher with a wife, child, house, and mortgage, the other a well-paid terrorist), unexpectedly reunite... unexpectedly because one of them had supposedly died in a plane crash... Joining them is the largely underestimated policewoman with Indian-Ugandan-Belgian-Scottish heritage, Angelique De Xavier, who wants to take down the terrorist "Black Spirit." ... The teacher loves computer games, and somehow the plot feels like one too... a wicked game, but it's a looot of fun...

2) The Sacred Art Of Stealing (413 p) - Hilarious and highly intelligent plot-twists made the second book with Angelique DeXavier as the central character and an unusual thief as ant, gonist a very pleasurable (and thrilling) read. Starting with a bank robbery of another kind (fun, fun, fun) the story veers into more dangerous situations. One gets to know more about Angelique (martial art expert, Rangers fan although catholic and annoyed with the attitude of her male colleagues)... and yes, a love story starts...

3) A Snowball In Hell (396 p) - Again I loved it, with the three united - well, not always in a good way. Angelique, the terrorist, the thief-magician...and it's the former and the latter against the real villain - after a five year gap. Literary easter-eggs, twisted twists, wit, but also violence, satire and strong language.

After having given Glasgow and the Rangers its due (with great pleasure), I turned to some crime novels/thrillers recommended by friends: Three books by the US-American Julie Clark, a trilogy by the American writer and practicing physician Freida Mc Fadden (of which I presented the first in September) and a trilogy by the Finn Antti Tuomainen:

1) The Flight (326p): Debut novel... two women (Claire and Eva) meeting at the airport, both seeking refuge in flight by taking one … wanting to escape violence and crime, they switch their tickets and take the other woman's flight... Claire will go where Eva lived before... Eva takes the ticket for Costa Rica, but that flight doesn't arrive there.... interesting plot, engaging and touching.

2) The lies I tell (298p): Cat and Meg, two women again in Julie Clark's second novel... one an intelligent con-artist cum avenger of men's wrongdoings, the other a failed investigative journalist committed to a compulsive gambler... when they both meet, they engage in a battle of lies and thruths ... very entertaining, twisted and gripping with good character portrays and a surprising climax.

3) The Ghostwriter (356p): A daughter and a father, latter a famous writer with the burdon of being suspected to have murdered his two siblings when all were teenagers - the former, estranged to this man since decades and a professional ghostwriter for celebrities... out of circumstances she sees herself forced to write her father's memoirs in which the family's drama plays a prominent role...what was the truth then, what is it now? … again two well detailed characters and their interaction switching between past and present.

The Housemaid-trilogy narrated in first person account:

1) The Housemaid (already presented two months before). A housemaid with a dark secret in her past (which her employers don't know) is happy to get a job in a luxurious house of a wealthy family (quiet husband, seemingly friendly wife and teenage daughter), even given an attic room to live there (albeit with a door that locks only from the outside and only a very small window). It turns out that the luck she felt at the beginning turns more and more in a nightmare and fight for survival... Great twists and definitely thrilling.

2) TheHousemaid's Secret (352 p) : Second novel of the 'housemaid trilogy'...another job for Millie, again a well-off couple...a seemingly nice husband, but what's the matter with his wife whom Millie isn't allowed to see (but can hear cry)... hardly realistic but still thrilling.

3) The Housemaid is Watching (400p): Now the housemaid Millie has a family of her own and lives in a house with a neighborhood that turns out to be not what Millie had hoped for... don't like it as much as the first one...the quality of the story declines from 1 to 3, but it's still fast-paced and suspenseful.

Not the first crime novel by a Finn author I got to know but definitely the most humerous ones. I liked all the three... they are quite quaint with lovable characters.

1) TheRabbit Factor (343p): Antti Tuomainen's first novel of a trilogy with the insurance mathematician Henri Koskinen as hero. Henri is skilled in calculating but how do one 'calculate' a suddenly inherited adventure park, dangerous criminals and the love for a lively woman who is an artist with an unpredictable lifestyle and a daughter... gorgeous writing, with lots of dark humour, quirky situations and a bunch of lovable characters.

2) TheMoose Paradox (305p): Also in the second part, Henri experiences all sorts of unpredictable things, for example, he meets an old acquaintance who causes all sorts of chaos, tries to manage his employees who suddenly show strange ambitions, plans his future with Laura and her daughter, fights against new enemies and tries to run the day-to-day business of the adventure park on the side... relatble characters, fun and suspense, and the humour I like very much.

3) The Beaver Theory (269p): Mathematics can be so helpful... and what a great combination art and math can be. Henri learns the pros and cons of family life and has to prove himself in unusual parenting groups. Also, his adventure park is threatened with bankruptcy due to harsh competition...and then (not only one) murder happens.
