Chapter 25

Gulaal quietly follows Kesar and sits in the car. She looks at him from the corner of her eye and is amazed to find the huge smile still plastered on his face. "mujhe kya go ya tha us samay?main Kesar ko rok hi nahi paayi.main uski aankhon mein,uski baaton mein is kadhar kho gayi ki hosh hi nahi raha.main is tarah uske saamne kamzor banungi tho woh meri baat ko kaise maanega?mujhe kuch bhi kar ke usse door rehna hi hoga". Once again she steals a glance at Kesar who is now whistling an old Kishore Kumar tune which is coming on the radio and a dreamy smile creeps up on her face without her knowledge, "kehna kitna aasan hai par yeh kitna mushkil hai''". Just then Kesar's teasing voice cuts through her thoughts saying "ab aise hi mujhe nihaarthi rahogi tho main driving nahi kar paaunga. isliye saamne dekho mujhe nahi". Gulaal is embarrassed and stares straight ahead. Another song starts on the radio and Kesar excitedly says "arre yeh gaana mujhe bahut pasand hai.Kishore Da ka masti bhara andaaz kaafi entertaining hai.tumne yeh gaana suna hai kya Gulaal?". Gulaal shakes her head saying no to which Kesar replies "tab tho zaroor sunna chahiye.tumhe bahut acha lagega" and then he turns the volume up.

Kesar is looking at Gulaal mischeviously who is staring straight ahead with a blank expression. He thanked the Radio people who were responsible for playing this song. This song suited his purpose right now and who better than Kishore Da to help a lover out?

Gulaal is holding her hands in a fist trying hard to keep a blank face "Kesar,mujhe patha hai tumhe yeh gaana suddenly ithna acha kyun lagne laga?mujhe sathaana tumhe acha lag raha hai na.lekin main bhi haar nahi maanongi.main nahi hasoongi.dekh lena tum".

Gulaal tries very hard not to break into a smile but Kesar's playful smile and humming coupled with the lyrics of the song just weakens her resolve and she laughs out aloud which startles even Kesar for a second. Kesar looks at Gulaal who is now laughing so hard that there are tears in her eyes. Kesar's face transforms into a genuine smile. He is overjoyed to see her laugh because he is finally able to get a glimpse of the real Gulaal, not the lifeless zombie who had been parading around for the past couple of days. This is his Gulaal who lived life to the fullest, who experienced everything whether it is joy or sorrow whole heartedly. He wants to take a picture of her laughing without any care in the world but doesn't in fear of breaking the spell. Just then a loud sound is heard indicating a flat tyre and Kesar quickly stops the car to the side of the road under a streetlight. By now Gulaal had come back to her senses but her smile refuses to fade and asks "kya hua Kesar?yeh awaaz kya tha?"

Kesar gives her a small smile and says "lagta hai car ka front tyre flat ho gaya hai.tyre badalna padega.sorry Gulaal ghar pahunchthe thodi der aur ho jaayegi.tum yahin baitho.main jaldi se change kar deta hoon".

He takes off his coat and proceeds to roll up the sleeves of his shirt. He hated this job but Thank God he knew how to do it otherwise it would have created a problem, having to wait for assistance and all. He takes the spare tyre and starts with the whole tyre changing process quietly praying "bas jald se jald tyre change kar loon aur kuch gadbad na ho". but as soon as he finishes the thought a sudden downpour of rain starts and Kesar looks up at the sky as if asking "really,bhagwaan, really!". He continues his work quietly thinking "chal Kesar,jaldi jaldi kaam khatam karle isse pehle ki tu poori tarah bheeg jaaye". Suddenly he feels someone standing near him holding an umbrella over him. He looks to the side and sees Gulaal getting wet in the rain but holding the umbrella for him. By this time Kesar had finished changing the tyre. He gets up and holds the umbrella bringing Gulaal closer to him thus protecting her from the rain.

Kesar: "yeh tum kya kar rahi ho?ab dekho bheeg gayi na.tumhari tabiyat kharaab ho gayi tho".

Gulaal: "tum bhi tho bheeg rahe the.main kaise aaram se car ke andar baith sakti hoon.agar tumhe kuch ho ''."

Gulaal realizes what she is saying and stops talking.she looks to the ground with her cheeks blushing. Kesar smiles widely and he slowly lifts up her chin,comes close to her and whispers "tumhe apne dost ki kitni chintha hai.kya tum apne sabhi doston ke liye itni pareshaan rehti ho?". Gulaal refuses to meet his eyes and replies trying to change the topic "agar kaam khatam ho gaya ho tho chalein". Kesar holds her back and says "arre pehle is tyre ko peeche tho rakh doon". He quickly rolls the tyre and keeps it in it's rightful place and says to Gulaal who is still holding the umbrella "chalo ab chalte hain". They sit inside the car and as soon as Kesar is about to start the car, Gulaal grabs hold of his arm and says in a worried tone "yeh kya,tumhe tho chot lagi hai.khoon bhi beh raha hai".

Kesar replies "kuch nahi. choti si karoch hai aur kuch nahi.tum pareshaan math ho".

Gulaal forgets everything else for the moment. The sight of blood on Kesar's arm worries her and she tries to wipe off the blood using her hand-kerchief and ties it around the wound to stop the blood flow "chintha tho hogi na.tum na bilkul dhyaan nahi rakhte apna.hamesha mujhe tumhare aage peeche daudna padega kya?" Gulaal doesn't hear any reply from Kesar so she looks up and sees Kesar look at her with love and affection. Kesar replies softly "main yeh yaad karne ki koshish kar raha tha ki aisa scene maine kis movie mein dekha tha lekin yaad hi nahi aa raha.tumhe patha hai kya?" and then he starts laughing.

Gulaal drops Kesar's arm and says "chalo ab jaldi car start karo.ghar pahunchne mein kitni der ho gayi hai.sab pareshaan ho rahe honge".

Kesar replies in an exaggerated way with his hand on his heart "As you wish,my love.yeh naajeez tumhari har hukum maanane ko tayyar hai",and he starts the car.

Meanwhile Gulaal is lost in her own thoughts,"yeh kya ho gaya?main tho Kesar ko apne se door karne chali thi lekin yeh tho ulta mere aur kareeb aa gaya.yeh maine kya kar diya?nahi abhi bhi kuch nahi bigda.main ab bhi usse door jaa sakti hoon.bas use apne paas math aane dena.haan Gulaal,tu yeh kar sakti hai".

They reach Gulaal's house and Gulaal quickly tries to escape by saying good night but is not able to move as Kesar holds her wrist. She looks back at Kesar with a questioning look and Kesar smiles in return and says "arre aise kaise?maine tumhe ghar tak chodne ka promise kiya tha aur yeh tho sirf gate hai.chalo main bhi chaltha hoon tumhare saath". Gulaal tries to stop him but Kesar refuses to listen to her and accompanies her to the front door holding her hand.

Gulaal: "acha ab ghar tak pahuncha diya na.ab tum jaao."

Kesar: "abhi nahi.pehle door ko tho khulne do phir main''"

The door opens and Revji smiles looking at Kesar with Gulaal. "arre Kesar beta,kaise ho?andar aao. aur Gulaal tumne ek baar bhi nahi socha ki humein phone karke batha do ki tumhe aate der ho jaayegi.agar Kesar ne phone nahi kiya hotha tho hum kitne pareshaan ho jaate."

Gulaal had forgotten all about it as she had been too busy thinking about Kesar and his indifferent attitude in the morning. She is about to say sorry when Kesar interrupts "sorry Uncle,meri hi galti thi.maine hi use subah jaldi bhej diya tha isliye use time hi nahi mila aap logon ko bathane ka.usine mujhse kaha tha ki aap logon ko inform kar doon."

Revji: "oh yeh baat thi.acha theek hai. Kesar beta tum andar tho aao. Arre yeh kya tum donon tho bheeg gaye ho, kaise?

Kesar: "Uncle,aate waqt car ka tyre puncture ho gaya.usi ko badalne ke chakkar mein hum baarish mein bheeg gaye".

Revji in an concerned voice: "oho,chalo jaldi andar aao aur kapde badal lo.tum bhi Kesar beta.main Yogesh se keh detha hoon.tum uske kapde pehen lo.aur beta waise bhi hum log bas dinner karne waale the.tum bhi hamaare saath khaana khaalo.aa jaao."

Gulaal is surprised at this new development and is about to say something when Kesar eagerly agrees "jee Uncle, bahut bhook lag rahi hai.bas ghar mein phone karke bathaa detha hoon.nahi tho pareshaan ho jaayenge". Kesar is clearly happy that he would be getting to spend more time with Gulaal. After a quick change of clothes Kesar joins everyone else for dinner.

Throughout dinner Kesar regales the entire family with many funny incidents from his past. The whole family is entertained and all the while Gulaal is watching Kesar with a small sad smile on her face thinking to herself "kaash yeh pal main hamesha ke liye qaid kar sakti.kaash ki us din maine who baatein suni nahi hothi,kaash Sudha bhabhi ne mujhe chethaavni na di hothi.kitni khush thi main apne sapnon ki duniya mein". Kesar senses her gaze and looks back at her with a smile but Gulaal looks away. Soon its time for Kesar to leave.Revji thanks him one more time saying "beta,tumhari wajah se aaj hamein Gulaal ki chintha bilkul nahi hui".

Poonamba: "haan beta,hamein is baat ki thasalli thi ki tum uske saath ho aur use sahi salaamat ghar leke aaoge".

Kesar: "arre yeh kya,aap log tho mujhe sharmindha kar rahe hain.maine tho bas apne farz ko nibhaaya hai".

Revji and Poonamba are surprised and Kesar quickly explains with a charming smile, "woh main Gulaal ko apna dost samajhtha hoon aur uska khayaal rakhna meri zimmedaari hai". Revji and Poonamba are pleased with his answer. Kesar takes their blessings and soon leaves.

Later as Gulaal is about to go into her room she overhears her parents talk about Kesar.

Poonamba: "Kesar kitna acha ladka hai.jo bhi ladki uski patni banegi woh sach mein bahut bhagyashaali hogi.kaash Gulaal ki shaadi Vasant ki jagah Kesar se''."

Revji: "yeh aap kaisi baatein kar rahi hain."

Poonamba: "main kuch galat nahi keh rahi.kya aap ke mann mein ek baar bhi yeh khayaal nahi aaya? Sach boliye".

Revji: "haan,Kesar bahut acha ladka hai,lekin jo hamaari Gulaal ke saath hua hai use hum badal tho nahi sakte na.aur ab hamein uske ateet ke baare mein nahi balki uske bhavishya ke bare mein sochna chahiye".

Poonamba: "patha nahi aaj mujhe aisa kyun laga ki Kesar ke mann mein Gulaal ke prati sirf dosti ki bhavana nahi balki usse kuch badhkar hai. uski aankhon mein aaj maine Gulaal ke liye izzat ke saath-saath pyaar ko bhi mehsoos kiya hai.agar Gulaal ki shaadi Kesar se ho jaaye tho mujhse zyaada khush aur koi nahi hoga".

Revji: "shaayad yeh aapka wehem hai aur kuch nahi. aap ne mujhse yeh baat ki, theek hai lekin kabhi is baat ko kisi aur ke saamne zaahir math hone dijiye.jab tak khud Kesar ya uske parivaar waale is baat ka zikr nahi karte tab tak hamein is bare mein sochna bhi nahi chahiye". Revji smiles and continues " waise agar aap jo keh rahi hain woh sach hai tho mujhe bhi bahut khushi hogi kyunki Kesar se behtar jeevan saathi hamaari beti ko nahi milega.kaash aapki kahi hui baat sach ho jaaye.Maavdi se bas yehi dua hai ki Gulaal ki aanewaali zindagi khushiyon se bhar jaaye".

Gulaal is stunned to hear the conversation and she slowly walks back to her room in a daze. She looks at herself in the mirror and slowly takes out a small box. She opens it with a smile and caresses the paayal which Kesar had gifted her when he confessed his love. The day she had decided to stay away from Kesar she had removed the paayal and put it away. Now her eyes fill up looking at them and she thinks "baapji aur baa bhi yehi chahthe hain ki Kesar meri zindagi mein khushiyaan lekar aaye.phir main kyun apne aap se ladoon?kyun na apna loon Kesar ke pyaar ko jisse door bhaag kar na tho mujhe khushi mil rahi hai aur na hi Kesar ko chain". But then she suddenly remembers Sudha bhabhi's words and she comes back to reality "nahi,main aisa kuch nahi karungi.Baa,baapji sirf meri khushi ke bare mein soch rahe hain lekin shaayad woh nahi dekh paa rahe hain ki hamaare rishte se Kesar ke bhavishya par kitna bura asar padega.aur main yeh bilkul nahi chahthi ki meri wajah se Kesar tarakki ki unchaayion ko na choo paaye". She holds the paayals to her lips and as tears fall down her face she thinks "Kesar,main jaanthi hoon ki main tumhe bahut dukh pahuncha rahi hoon.mujhe maaf kar dena".

Kesar is in a good mood as he enters his room but then he is startled to hear a voice "arre waah,kya baat hai aaj tho tu bahut khush lag raha hai". he finds Rewa sitting on his bed watching some movie on the TV.

Kesar: "tu yahaan kya rahi hai?aur tu mujhe daraathi kyun rehti hai?waise tera chehra hi kaafi hai daraane ke liye",and he laughs at his own joke.

Rewa is genuinely happy to see her brother so cheerful and so ignores the teasing. She gives him a warm smile and says "lagta hai tere aur Gulaal ke beech ki saari misunderstandings khatam ho gayi.warna kal tak tho Devdas banke ghoom raha tha.main tho tere liye woh K.L.Saigal wala gaana bhi bajaane waali thi "jab dil hi toot gaya'..".

lekin aaj tho tere chehre par ek alag si chamak hai,tho bathao kya hua,kaise pataaya?".

Kesar looks at his younger sister with affection and replies "Gulaal ab bhi pati nahi hai lekin main uske dil ki baat ko jaan gaya hoon.bas ab yeh jaanana hai ki aakhir woh is tarah se behave kyun kar rahi hai?aur main yeh jaankar rahunga.lekin main bahut khush hoon Rewa kyunki aaj main jaan gaya hoon ki woh jitni chaahe koshish karle mujhse door kabhi nahi reh sakti".

"You breakdown every resolve with a bashful smile, One look into your eyes and my restrains come crashing down, How do I walk away from that comforting arms, How do I turn away from that affectionate glare, How do I stop looking behind as I know you are just walking two steps behind…."

I can completely understand Gulaal dilemma, it's hard to keep away from someone who knows you so well and who can understand your every thought, who can read your mind like a page in a book and who happens to be your life, to give this up for something that's your heart is yet to come to terms with even though your mind believes this to be in his best interest…ahh… If life was ever fair….

So to the car ride and the perfect song for Kesar to make headways to already created gap in that meticulously built wall with that bashful smile and innocent remark all that was needed was some divine intervention and that did come in form of flat tyre and subsequent rain, poor Gulaal harder she tries harder she falls on the wrong side….With concern and care that she cannot hide trust Kesar to take full control and he does that so, so well she doesn't even know what smooth operator he is na he had already planned visit to her house by making that all important call beforehand…..

Another example of how smart this guy is reflected in his conversation with Revaji and Poonam where he mentions about how it's due to *friendship* it was his duty to drop Gulaal home…He is never going to let this rest till he gets his answers na…….

Revaji and Poonam convo was brilliantly scripted every parent would want their daughter to find a right partner who will be able to provide all the world's happiness and fulfil all her wishes and they are no different, they could see that right partner for their Gulaal in form of Kesar but again Revaji strikes as a someone who knows how this world functions and rightfully wants the proposal to be initiated from Kesar's family…I am awaiting that all important father son convo between Kesar and MB now….really nice build up Mini….

Gulaal's self-reflection on her behaviour around Kesar is bit heart wrenching, she so can't control her feelings and emotions around him even though she is trying so hard…you can't help but feel for her….

And the last part where confident Kesar speaks out his resolve to get to the bottom of her unreasonable behaviour is so heart-warming I will like him to win of course…It's good to see this confident, self-assured and mature side of Kesar who knows what he wants and goes after his goal with complete determination & purpose……

Lovely chappi Mini👏, I didn't find it one bit boring and especially when 90% of chappi is about GK how can you term it boring yaar...le big zappi from me🤗….Looking forward to the next one….😍
