Part 15
A moment is all I am searching for
The roadside chai stall was adding to the mythical aura of the situation. Maan was nowhere to be seen. Maybe he is somewhere nearby. Their driver was having a short tea break and Geet couldn't resist the temptation of a plate of steaming chicken momos(dumplings)... A common cuisine of north-east India.
It was a fairly gloomy day today with a cloudy demeanour. But then, weather in this part can never really be trusted. Ten years of Himalayas had taught Geet enough. Maan and she hadn't had much of a conversation after their last. She could understand what he was trying to imply but life is never really straightforward. You can't really differentiate people into plain black and white. In fact, Geet had observed that more often the colour grey predominates...
"Enjoying dumplings are we??"
Geet turned back and watched Maan having an almost finished cigarette in between his fingers smiling at her.
"I love them, especially the chicken ones. Wanna try?"
"Bring it on."
Geet dipped one in a mixture of tomato sauce and chilli sauce and held up for Maan who bit it trying not to let the food crumbs on Geet's finger. The innocent yet intimate gesture fluttered something inside Geet. What is it with this man that he can crumble all her inner walls so easily? With him she can forget everything.
Maan made some sounds of appreciation as he ate. Geet smiled. He had a goofy almost boyish grin on his face as he ate.
"Geet, we are ordering another plate. These are really good."
Geet smiled.
"Seems like you never had them. Your loss, khurana."
"Actually I have had this before. Somehow the roadside stall has a way tastier than the ones they serve at the posh hotels."
"Are you kidding me? Who eats momos at posh hotels paying sooo much extra? It's like wasting your money on the chats and golgappe at big hotels. The street food has the name for a reason. It is supposed to be eaten on the streets."
"Ah here is the spitfire sister Brij always used to talk about. No wonder I never recognised you as the one I met."
"Shit happens!!"
There was a strange silence. The roaring Teesta River and some wayward vehicles were the only sounds as the silence between them stretched.
"Don't you think it will be a tremendous loss if you allow Dev to break you?"
"Dev did break me Maan. If I pretend otherwise I would be kidding myself."
"You should pretend. I had read somewhere long ago that if you pretend long enough it can slowly turn into reality even without your knowledge."
"It's in a novel by Tagore. Chokher Bali... Sand in the eyes... And strangely the story was plotted around extra marital affair as well though much deeper. I am no Asha and Meera is definitely no Binodini though Dev could be a perfect Mahendra."
"You are a vivid reader I take."
"I had always loved reading story books. It was my way of escaping reality. When I came here I slowly took interest in reading Tagore's works. Of course I have from a very authentic source that the translations are nowhere good enough as the original works. Makes me wonder, if the translation could impact me so much how I would react if I could read the original work."
"You are one passionate reader but I have to agree with you. I have read that piece and it is awesome."
"You are a vivid reader as well I take."
"My daadima had always encouraged and I have always been attracted to literary classics though like you I yearn to read in the native language. Haven't you learnt Bengali in all these years?"
"I did. But only to speak not read."
The second plate of dumplings was gone in midst of talks about a world of imagination. They were both talking way more candidly. The invisible barrier was gone... whether permanently or just for the moment they didn't know.
"Saabji, we need to get going. The weather is not good."
A call from their driver brought them back to the world. They smiled as they paid for their food and together settled inside the car to start travelling once again.

"So she is alone?"
"I am sorry Pari. I suppose I should have gone but..."
"No you shouldn't have Brij. This was her journey. She needs to come in terms with this herself."
"Hmm."
"Brij, do you want to talk about it?"
"About what Pari?"
"Whatever stopped you from going after Geet."
There was a silence and all Pari heard was Brij's rapid breath in and breathe out. The moment stretched as words failed.
"It's okay Brij if you don't want to share."
"It's not that I don't want to share Pari. I can't share. I am too selfish to share what little I have."
"I understand and it is not selfish. And if it is you have every right to be a little selfish. When are you coming back?"
"Tonight. Do you think I should have waited for Geet?"
"Nope. Something tells me that Geet would be just fine."
"I guess."
"Come back and we can have a long chat."
"Pari, don't you think it is time for you to have a heart to heart as well? Maybe not with me but someone..."
"I am selfish as well Brij. Maybe someday..."

The windows showed the foggy weather as Geet and Maan sped towards Darjeeling. Geet couldn't help but remember the time she had travelled on this road for the first time, the blushing newly wedded bride in the arms of her husband. The past was the beautiful place to be.
Hold me let me feel you
In my arms again
Softly you whisper my life
My best friend.
A moment is all i' m searching for
Just a moment in love with you
A moment so special so beautiful
In a moment my wish come true
Save me from the future
Take me back in time
the words they have no meaning
Without you in my life
Let me walk the rainbow
In times of sweet surprise
To when i was a little girl
And i had you in my life
Maan was watching Geet. Her curls were touching her cheeks escaping from the messy bun she had pulled her hair onto. Geet is beautiful and there was no denying it. He had been right of course. Given a chance he would fall in love with Geet. Loving Geet was really easy but could he risk it? The pain and the uncertainty of a relationship; but most importantly could he allow himself to lose the control again, give someone else the power to hurt him again. Love hurts worse than any weapon created by man. It hurts your soul and lets your body live.
Time has no answerA moment is all i am searching for
Geet turned her head just in time to turn to watch Maan staring at her. As soon as their eyes met it was like magic worked between them. They stared as their eyes spoke millions of words their lips couldn't.
Geet didn't feel uncomfortable held under his gaze. It was not creepy look of a stalker neither the love filled almost worshiping look of a lover. It was a look filled with questions, questions she didn't want to answer yet she knew that she would have to at some point. The moment was a turning point of her life. She knew everything would change the moment she took his offer to go together to Darjeeling... That unexplained chemistry between them that started on that stormy night had only increased in its intensity. But does she have the strength to pretend this moment is nothing but something ordinary or did she have the courage to accept it and move on? Will it be selfish of her if she wanted to let go of the pain even for a minute?
I am looking for a reason
Maan watched as Geet's eyes lost the surprise and got the look of comprehension. He knew this was another turning point of their already complicated story. But something had started that night they met first and that something only strengthened as they are journeying together. Is it love? Definitely not. But it could be given a chance. But did he have the courage to take that leap of faith again? May be not but he definitely not something he would brush away. Geet is special. She had always been. He is going to acknowledge this strange attraction between them even if only in his heart.
I see the magic all aroundMay be this world is a mystery to me- 2
A moment is all i am searching for
Geet broke the palpable silence between them in almost apprehensive whisper.
"Maan...I love Dev."
"And I love Sameera. Maybe not in the self consuming way of yours and maybe not like I used to when I married her but it is there. "
"I won't. This... whatever this is... I am not ready for it yet."
"Me either. But it is there Geet, we can't deny it. I won't deny it."
"Hmm."
The silence stretched as they both turned to opposite direction avoiding the magnetic pull towards each other.
A moment is all i am searching for
As the cab entered Darjeeling Maan felt Geet's gaze on him. Her soft voice broke through the silence.
"Maan, is that offer of yours to be there when I tell Muskaan still open?"
"I would be there if you allow me to be."
"Please..."
"Sure."
"I am not denying this Maan... I just can't accept it right now either."
"The world is full of grey areas Geet. Some things have to be placed in that grey area between acceptance and denial. I know what you are trying to say Geet and I understand."
As the cab stopped in front of Muskaan's school Geet took a deep breath. This is going to be a very long day indeed.
