When Dev returned home from work at his usual time of 6pm, Geet was strewn across the couch lifelessly with a book held up to her face.
"He's gone to Khurana Mansion," she spoke, without even letting him ask.
He placed his briefcase inside the door and disappeared again.
She set the book aside and sat up, running her hands through her hair.
The dark, almost black pair of eyes refused to leave her mind's eye.
What exactly was going on?
She didn't know anymore, & she could feel herself slipping dangerously into an abyss of confusion. An abyss that had almost consumed her whole 7 years ago.

He found Maan outside the permanently closed gates of the mansion, one hand fisted around the metal and the other curled over a cigarette.
The clouds rolled over with an intent of downpour, and Dev reached Maan just before the first drops began to descend.
"What are you trying to gain?"
"I have nothing left to lose."
"That wasn't my question."
"But that's my answer." He threw the cigarette aside into a newly formed puddle on the tarmac and lit another one.
"Do you want the mansion?"
He scoffed. "If I could burn it down to the ground, I would." Maan turned to face Dev, the rain blurring him from his vision. "What I want is a chunk of my past back, the past that you've turned into putty for your hands."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
He laughed sardonically. "Of course you don't. Cigarette?"
Dev shook his head.
"Ah, how could I forget. The golden boy would never give into an old vice."
Maan crushed his second cigarette under the sole of his shoe, whilst maintaining eye contact with Dev. He jerked his head towards the car. "I'll be the passenger, shall I?"

When they reached back to the apartment after a half hour silent journey, they were left with a note from Geet.
Gone to yoga class. Left takeout leaflet on the kitchen counter. Knock yourselves out, but not literally.
Geet'
Maan resisted the urge to fold her note into tiny pieces and keep it with him forever. Steal a part of her for himself, a part that his brother couldn't snatch away.
As if he'd read his mind, Dev tore the note apart into pieces and tossed it into the trash. When he turned back to look at Maan with the phone and leaflet in hand, he was met with a furious glare.
He couldn't resist a chuckle. "What is it, Maan? Did you want to keep the note and cherish her handwriting forever? Inhale her scent that lingered?"
Instead of his previous silence, Maan broke out into a smirk. "There's a part of her that will always be mine. You seem to forget that, brother."

"You can't leave me," came the soft, whimpered cry from her as her body trembled.
He wrapped an arm around her shoulder, cocooning her into his hold and then she turned her face slightly, so their noses bumped.
Forehead to forehead, their breaths mingled as he intertwined his fingers into hers as he leaned in for a kiss.
Responding with equal desperation and passion, they didn't even realise how or when she had settled herself on the rug atop the floorboard, his frame towering over her.
How his arms wrapped around her waist in a caged embrace, how their bodies touched at various different places.
It was a moment that was enveloped in whispers, whimpers and promising kisses, as the rains trickled down on the glass that separated them from the world.
"What have we done?" were her last words to him that night as she noticed the small spot of blood on the rug below them.
He kissed the top of her head and ran his fingers through her hair, before soothing her into sleep and carrying her to the couch.
It was the last time he would see her until the next 7 years.
