CHAPTER 6
How rude, toh manus swatala samazhto kai, Geet kahi garaz nai tula tyachi olakh karun ghyaychi, ani tyachya paisyanchi.. Brijla tuzha naav pun sangu dila nahi. Tuzhya kade na baghta chakka nighun gela.
( How rude, what does that man think of himself. Geet you have absolutely no need to know that man nor do your need his money. He did not even let Brij tell him your name. Literally walked away without even glancing at you), Pari fumed.
Oh but he had glanced at her and Geet was shaken up by that one look full of sheer hatred and disgust. She just could not fathom the reason for it.
Pari looked at the forlorn look on Geet's face and said,
Geet tu itech thamb me Brij la gheun yete, apan nighut, pure zhalya hya shrimantanchya partya jitha mansla kadi matrahi kimmathi det nahit.
(Geet you wait right here. I am going to go look for Brij and we are leaving right now. I've had enough of these snobbish parties where people ignore us just because they have a superiority complex).
Geet nodded dazedly at her as Pari left to find Brij.
Geet was feeling extremely claustrophobic standing there surrounded by her own confused thoughts. She wanted to get away from everything just for a moment when she saw the staircase leading to the balcony. She headed up the stairs and into the balcony that opened out into a courtyard. She breathed in the fresh air deeply. The noise of the party was muted out here for which she was glad.
Why, why had he looked so angry? Had he been angry with her from the beginning, and if so why?
Had she only imagined the emotions she thought she had seen in his eyes? Her thoughts swirled round and round endlessly, making her restless. She felt tears swim in her eyes at the unfairness of it all. Was she really never to feel anything for anybody in her life? Was she really unworthy of being loved by a man? Just as she was about to give up and go downstairs she heard a slight noise behind her. She whirled around only to find the man dominating her thoughts standing behind her.
There she was, just the person he'd been trying to get away from. The moonlight gleamed on her beautiful face creating shadows under her cheekbones. For a moment he thought he saw tears in her eyes and felt uneasy. Why would she be crying? Was he wrong about her? But no, if he hadn't heard what she had with his own ears there was a chance he might have believed her innocent. No he wasn't wrong about her. Maan Singh Khurana was never wrong in his judgments.
Ab yeh aasu kise dikhane ke liye baha rahi ho?Mujhe, Crocodile tears? he asked her in mocking tone.
Ji? Main samjhi nahi. She said hastily wiping away the tears.
Geet was perplexed and her heart was pounding at finding him so close to her.
Main samjhata hoon? Puri shyam tum mujhse ankh michauli ka khel, khel rahi thi. You have been trying to grab my attention through your unusual antics. I am extremely sure you saw me standing up there in the balcony and moved towards me pretending ignorance to my presence. Muzhe apne jaal mei fasane ki koshish karne wali tum pehli ladki nahi ho? Na hi is party mei na hi meri zindagi mei. Girls far more beautiful than you have tried setting a trap for me and failed.
Kya, kya, kab? Aap yeh kya keh rahe hai, meri kuch samajh me nahi aa raha. Geet was thoroughly confused.
The evening was turning more surreal with each passing moment. Perhaps he had come upstairs to be alone and finding her there had meant he couldn't vent his anger out in privacy. She had heard from Brij many a times about MSk's anger and how people avoided him like the plague when he was mad, for he vented that anger out indiscriminately on the first person in the line of his vision.
Geet gathered herself up and with the thought of diffusing his anger asked him gently, Mr. Khurana kuch hua hain kya? Kya main apki koi madat kar sakti hoon. Aap shayad mujhe jante nahi par main Brij Handa ki behen hoon. Hum Abhi abhi niche mile the Mera naam Ge..
Main bohot acchi tarah se jaanta hoon ki tum kaun ho, aur meri madat kyu karna chahti ho? He sneered.
She sounded so genuinely concerned that if he hadn't known better he would have been completely drawn in by the gentle tone of her voice.
By the way does your husband know that you are out and about trying to climb money trees.
Ji mera koi husband nahi hai, she exclaimed, aur maine kabhi koi paise ka pedh nahi dekha.
It suddenly dawned on Geet that she was the reason for his anger which confused her even more.
So she decided to try again, Suniye apko zaroor koi galat faimi hui hai. Aap please mujhe bataiye ki akhir baat kya hai? What tree are you talking abou' she trailed off and gasped looking at him with wide eyes,
Aap.. aapne niche meri baatey sunli hai na? Isiliye aap itne naraz hai. Dekhiye woh baate, main na hi apke bare mein keh rahi thi, na hi apko suna rahi thi. Apko bohot badi galt faimi ho gayi hai Please aap ek baar mujhe samjhane dijiye. Woh to main apne bhai aur dost se keh rahi thi. Agar main jant ki aap sun rahe hai main kabhi aisa nahi kehti. Mai aapke bare mein aisa soch bhi nahi sakti hoon. The generosity that you showed today was extremely humbling and I wouldn't dream of insulting such magnanimity.
She was getting to him with her word and her soft voice. Maan shook of the emotion she was trying to wrap him in. By now was extremely angry at her for still continuing the pretense of innocence and ignorance.
He walked a step closer to her and looked down at her angrily,
Mai nahi janna chahta ki tum mere bare me kya sochti ho. Tum jaisi ladki jiski shaadi nahi hui hai fir bhi ek bacchi ki maa hai tum kya safai dogi apne bare mein.
Suddenly Geet's eyes narrowed hearing his words, but she held back from saying anything.
He continued angrily, Na jane apni bacchi ko kya sikha rahi ho. Agey jake usey bhi apne jaise hi banana ka irada hai shayad tumhara.
BAS! BAS! BAS! Geet yelled clapping her hands on her ears.
Hot angry tears swam in her eyes. She took a step closer to him which brought them toe to toe. She looked him straight in the eye her whole body vibrating with anger,
You, don't you dare say a word about my daughter. She is my daughter, mine. My daughter is the best part about me Mr. Khurana and I refuse to stand here and let some ignorant fool judge our relationship. Aap mere bare me, jo chahe soch sakte hai jo chahe keh sakte hai par agar aapne meri bacchi aur uski parvarish ke bare mein iske age ek laabz bhi kaha to mujhse bura koi nahi hoga. How can you judge somebody's whole life and their character based on a few words you heard, which were not even meant for you. Chaliye maine yeh maana ki main charitrahin hoon, aur aapki is party mein sirf apne matlab ke liye aapse ankh michauli khelke aapse paise ugalwane aayi thi. Aur aap ke hisab se main woh pehli aurat nahi hoon jisne yeh koshish ki hai. Par aap ka kya? Kya aap ki aankho mein aapki kimat sirf apka paisa hain. Aapka paisa aur apki soch dono aapko mubarak ho. Mujhe aap dono se kuch nahi chahiye. Goodbye Mr Khurana.
Geet turned around to leave after delivering her angry rant, when the man before her grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
Mera haath chodiye Mr. Khurana, yeh bartav aapko shobha nahi deta, Geet said with quiet dignity even though she could feel herself trembling with a mixture of fear and excitement at his touch.
Tumhe kya lagta hai, tum apni bakwas mujhe sunakar chali jaoge aur main chup baithunga. He felt the warmth and softness of her skin under his fingers and his hand tightened reflexively.
He no longer felt in control of the conversation. She made him question himself and he did not like that one bit. He wasn't sure what the fight was about anymore. He had never manhandled a woman before, but he just could not let go. He pulled her closer still, and felt her scent overwhelm his senses. There was a car that honked below and the spell surrounding them was broken. He pushed her away from him in disgust and turned around.
Main Maan Singh Khuran hoon, aur main apni kimat khoob janta hoon. Tum jaisi ladki ke muh se mujhe apni kimat ke bare mein kuch nahi sunna. Ainda kabhi mere samne maat aana. Main manta hoon ki yeh humari pehli aur aakhri mulakat hogi. Good bye Miss. Handa. He strode away without glancing back at her even once.
Geet watched his rapidly disappearing back with a pounding heart.
It's nothing Geet, its nothing. It's just anger that is the only reason your heart is pounding so fast. It's got nothing to do with that horrible man she told herself. Suddenly the events of the evening overwhelmed her and she burst into noisy tears. She sat down in a chair which was placed a few feet away, bent over and rocked herself while sobbing her heart out.
Suddenly she heard a squeaking noise behind her. She thought he had come back again, and went rigid, but refused to look up.
Did you know, one standard teaspoon will hold one hundred and twenty teardrops. There are three teaspoons in each tablespoon, which means that one tablespoon will hold 360 teardrops. One cup holds sixteen tablespoons which means that you would have to cry an amazing 5760 tears to fill that cup up. Now then, do you want a teaspoon, a tablespoon, a cup or will this dinner napkin do, asked a young voice from behind her.
Geet frowned, that voice sounded awfully familiar. Where had she heard it?
Oh, she gasped remembering and turned around to find the young boy in the wheel chair grinning at her.
Dev, she exclaimed.
Dev was equally surprised to see her.
Geet Di, aap? Aap yahape iss party mein kya kar rahi hain. Mujhe laga aap koi Bollywood actress ho.
Dev loved "The Claridges" hotel and had begged Maan to bring him here when he came to know the party venue. Maan had agreed reluctantly on the condition that he was to stay well out of the ball room area. He'd always kept Dev out of the public eye, and he did not want the press to even suspect about Dev. So he had booked a suite in the hotel for Dev to spend the evening there.
Maan had wanted Dadi to come with him to the ball, however she had refused using Dev as an excuse stating that he needed her with him and had pleaded with Dev to agree. Dadi hated large crowds and definitely hated being flattered and fawned over by strangers just because she was Maan Singh Khuranas grandmother. When Maan had called an hour ago to try to get her to the party once again, she had pretended to be sick and was currently locked up in the suite enjoying room service and a massage she had called in for.
Dev in the meantime had gotten bored in the room and had wandered outside and gradually made his way toward the party ballroom. He had just wanted to take a peek at some of the Bollywood actors who he had known were going to be there. He had made his way to the courtyard after asking for directions to a place from where he could watch the party without interrupting. Some of the staff feeling pity for a boy in a wheel chair had given him the location of the courtyard. Dev was Maan Singh Khurana's brother after all and knew to turn any disadvantage to his advantage and so the humble but eager voice he'd used had worked on them. He had made it to the courtyard and just as he was wheeling himself across it eagerly he had seen a woman bent over and crying. He thought that perhaps she was some Bollywood actress and wanted to see her face along with consoling her. He racked his brain on how to approach her when suddenly the facts about tears had popped into his head and he'd blurted them out.
Bollywood actress aur main, Geet laughed suddenly feeling much better after having seen Dev.
Di aaj to aap kisi Bollywood actress se kaam nahi lag rahi. Aap to unki chutti kar sakti hai,.
Dev you chotu flirt, she grinned. She got up from the chair bent down and gave him a quick hug and a kiss on his cheek. She then ruffled his hair and straightened it back. Dev loved the attention he got form Geet and preened like a peacock under her care.
Waise Dev tum yaha kya kar rahe ho aur woh bhi akele?
Arey main akele nahin hoon di, mere saath DD bhi hai.?
DD woh kaun hai?
Arey aur kaun Di meri Dramebaaz Dadi. Dev grinned at her.
Geet chuckled at that.
Woh hain kaha?
Humare kamre mein hain bhai se chup rahi hain.
Kyu?
Bhai wanted her to go with him to the party downstairs but she refused with all kinds of excuses.
Waise tumhara kamra aur iss hotel mein. Mujhe nahi maloom tha tum aur Dadi itne raiz ghar se ho ki iss hotel me kamra book kar sakte ho? She looked warily at Dev?
Hey Bhagwan she said, looking skywards, aap meri hi zindagi mein kyu aamiro ki bauchar kar rahe ho?
She looked back at Dev and asked him. To kya tumhare bhai Maan Singh Khurana ko jaante hain.
Dev opened his mouth to tell her that Maan was his brother when she continued,
Tumhare bhai uss Krur Singh Khurana ke jaise to nahin hain na?
Ji mere bhai bahut acche'acche hain mere saath , he mumbled quietly.
Haan zarur aisa hi hoga. Tum aur Dadi jitney pyaare ho tumhare bhai bhi utne hi pyaare honge hain na?Na ki khud ko Delhi Sultanate ke badshah samajhne wale uss Maan Singh Khurana ki tarha. "Maan Singh Khurana" aise keh raha tha jaise purane movies me Ajit kehta tha, "Sara sheher mujhe lion ke naam se jaanta hai".
Villian Singh Khurana kahi ka. Dev looked at his Geet di ranting in awe.
There was no way he was telling her that he was Maan's brother. He would have to consult with Dadi in regards to the matter.
Just then Brij and Pari came upstairs searching for her.
Geet they both exclaimed.
Hum kabse dhoond rahe the tumhe Geet. Tum thik to ho na? Apna purse aur mobile bhi niche chod ayi tum? Brij exclaimed walking towards her.
Sorry bhaiyya , yaha upar kya hain dekhne aayi thi. Main bilkul thik hoon , she told him winking at Dev.
Pari, Bhaiyya yeh Dev hai. Maine kaal aap logo se, Dev aur Dadi ke bare mein kaha tha na yeh wahi hain.
Oh to yeh hai tumhara Dev the Birbal. Pari exclaimed.
Hi Birbal nice to meet you. She grinned and hi-fied him
Birbal kyu, Dev asked perplexed.
Kyun ki Geet kehti hain tum bohot zyada smart ho to isliye Birbal, samjhe bacchu
Ji. Par aap please mujhe Dev hi bulaiye he told her.
She nodded.
Brij also shook hands with him
Main Brij hoon Geet ka bhai.
Chalo Dev main tumhe tumhare kamre tak chod deti hoon aur Dadi se bhi mil lungi. Geet told Dev.
Dev nodded his agreement and they all left to meet with Savitri Devi.
After expressing surprise at seeing Geet and her family Dadi hugged Geet and expressed her delight. As they all set around and chatted, Dev found a private moment and whispered in his Dadi's ear,
Geet di ko kisi bhi haal mein yeh mat bataiyega ki Maan Singh Khurana mere bhai ya phir apke pote hai.
Kyun, Dadi, asked in a surprised low tone.
Baad me batata hoon, he whispered back.
Dadi aaj agar apke bade pote se milna hota to bahut accha lagta, Geet smiled at Dadi
Nahi! exclaimed Dev and Daadi together.
Mera matlab hai woh to party se itne jaldi nahi aayega. Aur aap log to nikal rahe the na? Dadi urged shamelessly,
Dadi humare muhalle mein Christmas ka celebration hoga agley hafte
Aap Dev ke saath aayiye na, mujhe apko Baba se bhi milana hai. Please na mat kahiyega.
Aap ayengi naa? Geet urged Savitri Devi sueezing her hand gently.
Please Dadi. Main Miri hum sab aapka intezaar karenge.
Haan aur agar ho sake to Dev ke bade bhai ko bhi saath me leke aaiyega. Unse bhi Milna ho jayega
Nahi, Dev and Dadi exclaimed again together.
Hum dono zaroor ane ki koshish karenge per mera bad apota kaam me vyasta rehta hai to uska koi bharosa nahi.
To phir aap dono ka aana pakka raha.
They all said their goodbyes and left.
Dev shared what Geet had said about Maan.
And Dev and Dadi reached at a unified conclusion
Under no circumstances was their relationship with Maan to be revealed at this point to Geet.
And now the next task was to convince Maan to let them attend the Christmas celebration.

Christmas Celebrations , and the Conspiracy.
