Part 9

Naintara ad Dev arrived in the morning at Handa Haveli with shagun and Mehndi. They waited outside to make sure that the man who looked like Maan was not there with the Handas. Naintara was not convince Dev saw Maan yesterday. She didn't think Maan would be here in HP of all places. She thought Dev was feeling anxious and nervous yesterday, and that he had imagined seeing Maan. So both were here to find out whether the wedding was still going ahead and the identity of the man who was with Geet at the lake. Once they were sure that only the Handa parivaar were in the house, they knocked on the door. They were shown to the living room by the servant, who then went to fetch the Handa elders.

"Sorry Daarji I had to leave early yesterday. My mother was ill and I saw that Geet was safe, so I thought it was best to attend my mother," Dev said to Daarji, who had entered the room with Brij and Tayji.

"That is okay puttarji. Brij was there na? How is Bhabhi now?"

It was Naintara's turn to speak "She is much better Daarji, thank you. She has been asking about Geet. How is Geet, we don't see her anywhere? Is she ok? Can we meet her?"

"Geet is fine. I think she was a bit scared of the whole adventure. But she is fine now. I will just ask Rano to call her."

"By the way Daarji, who was the man with Geet yesterday? He looked after Geet , didn't he? We would like to thank him for taking good care of our Geet?" Naintara continued.

Daarji didn't know what to say? He was not expecting this question. But what would he say? What should he say? That the man who stayed with Geet was a stranger to them?

Brij had become quite sweaty and tense on hearing Naintara's question. After exchanging a look with Daarji, Brij decided to handle the situation. "Wo actually, he is a friend of mine from Delhi. He was camping by the lake, when Geet came across him. He felt it his duty to look after Geet since she was alone. He couldn't phone us yesterday, because he had lost his phone."

Neither Dev nor Naintara seemed convinced with Brij's story. Also they needed to confirm whether or not the man Dev saw was indeed Maan. Naintara probed further. "What is your friend's name? Maybe we know his family. We know a lot of people from Delhi"

Brij felt the question somewhat strange and Naintara's comment about knowing families in Dehli even stranger, but decided to answer "Maan Singh Khurana"

Dev who had been drinking a cup of tea when Brij said Maan's name, started coughing violently. Naintara suddenly became very pale and thought "So Dev was right. It was Maan at the lakeside. Now what? If Maan is a good family friend as Brij reports him to be, then he would be invited to the wedding!." She needed to check. It would determine their course of action.

"So as a good friend of yours BrijJi, he will be invited to the wedding won't he?" Naintara continued. She needed to find out whether Maan would be there.

"Yes, yes of course" answered Brij. Now he would have to find Maan, invite him to the wedding and insist he attend at any cost.

Before Naintara could think any further, she heard Daarji say "Oh, here comes Geet. Geet puttar. Naintara and Dev have come to see how you are. Isn't that very thoughtful of them?"

Geet sat down beside Daarji, opposite Dev. Naintara asked her a few polite questions about her health. Geet answered without looking her in the eye. Then Dev mentioned Maan in passing, at which point Geet's eyes darted up to meet Dev's. Looking into his eyes, she found them staring lustfully at her.She suddenly felt very faint and ill at ease. Geet got up, apologised for feeling unwell and rushed back to her room.

"She must have got shy, thinking about the wedding", Taiyji joked.

Soon Dev and Naintara left. They needed a plan. Maan had interfered again. "You see Dev, Maan can never see us happy. First he doesn't support you in your work, get's you thrown out of the family business and even the family home. He has no managed to ruin our plan to get money. I will not spare him this time. It just goes to show you Dev, he is your half-brother and not real brother". In Naintara's mind, it was always Maan's fault. Maan had set standards too high in terms of business, dealing with people and no real human being, not even Dev could reach them. She managed to overlook Dev's extramarital affairs, which she again blamed Maan for. Maan arranged business parties where lots of beautiful women were invited and he expected Dev to participate in them. How could Dev be seduced, when Maan arranged it to happen? Yes, in her mind, Dev was the victim, and Maan the villain. He would have to pay...but how?

Later on that evening, Geet sat surrounded by a few close girl friends, cousins and Rajji. She was dressed in a heavily embroidered dark green lengha. The colour complemented her complexion and she looked like a doll. She was having her mehndi applied. All the girls were teasing Geet, but her mind was elsewhere. Why had Dev's staring upset her?

Maan stood outside Handa Haveli looking at the decorations of lights and flowers. It must be Geet's house, since she said she was getting married soon and this was definitely a wedding house! Either that or the owner liked to stand out from the crowd. He chuckled at the thought.
