CHAPTER 25

It was almost 8 in d nyt wen I reached hoshiarpur!! As I parked my audi, I realized d land rover was nt in place.. probably geet was out! But d lights were on, so atleast bauji wud be der.. he wasn't allowd ny stress!!

It was maahi who greeted me at d door n she seemed 2 b so happy 2 c me, almost as if she had missed me! It made me feel so good n all n took away all d fatigue of my office work n travelling n I felt so relaxed..! As I looked arnd, I realized d workers had done a gud job bt I cud easily feel geet's personal touch in it!! It felt warm n homely.. but I wondered wer she was..

As if sensing my question, maahi told me

"Maa has gone to Chandigarh for sm work.. n she shud b nk soon!! N nanu is in his room, resting.."

All my senses were bk on high alert!! Dev was in chandigarh..!! is tht y she had gone der to renew her ties?

"u've gotto c my room!!"

Maahi dragged me away fm my thots n into her room!! Her excitement was contagious n it definitely made me feel better!! Her room was done beautifully..

"maa did it.. wid my suggestions ofcourse!!

Another architect in d family.. I guess 'twas in our genes!! Wait did I just think tht!!

"are u hungry? Hw abt I fix a sandwich for u?"

N again she dragged me into d kitchen.. well she did a gud job wid it n then sat down wid me telling all tht had been happening d past week!!

N suddenly, she stopped..

As I got bk a familiar black audi was parked at home.. hey babaji.. was maan here?!! The no plate confirmed my thots..

On entering d kitchen I saw maan n maahi seated at d dining.. maan was eating smthng while maahi seemed 2 b talkin away to glory as maan listened to her wid keen interest!!

I dint know hw to react to his presence.. though he had been in my thots all d while.. bt den I had realized he had suddenly bcm so much a part of our lives.. n tht wasn't a gud thng especially wen he was moving on in his life!! I dint want maahi to get attached to him coz tht wud raise her hopes n I feared to c her hurt!! Yes, he had done a lot for us bt tht I no way gave him d ryt to break us!! Maahi was all I had.. playing defensive til I was sure of his intensions seemed to b d best ploy!!

"maan.. u here? I don't remember inviting u or u mentioning abt ur visit?" even I was shocked by hw cold I cud b.. n I saw d same shock on his face!!

"no u dint.." I cud feel his anguish at my behavior

"maa. Aren't u glad he's here?"

"I guess she isn't.. I guess I ll tk ur leave.."

"no.. I mean.. plz sit.. why don't u join us for dinner?"

"yeah.. plz plz plz.." maahi added.. n I realized her hopes were already raised!!

As I prepared parathas for bth of dem, I cud feel maan's gaze on me.. bt I refused to budge!!

" why don't u stay ovr 2nyt?" maahi said..

"no dear.. I shud stay ovr at d hotel!"

"y.. hv u already booked a room?" I cudnt stop myself..

"yes daddy.. plz stay.."

"maahi don't force him, he may hv company wid him, I mean .."

"if u mean sameera .. she isn't here"

"she 's out for a shoot in maldives"

Suddenly a lot of memories came flooding in my head.. of our honeymoon in Maldives..

As if sensing d tension, it was maahi who broke d silence..

"umm.. isn't Maldives in d Indian ocean? Hv u been der?"

"yup.. n so has ur maa..!!"

I wanted 2 kill him for dis.. for bringing dis topic in front of maahi..

"u ve been der maa..?" she looked at me dreamily..

"yeah honey.. d one tym .. at d abc lodge" I blurted out b4 I cud stop myself!!

"I don't hv many trips to confuse wid it!! Ever since maahi's birth.. we've had to conserve our resources!!"

"oh.. so its all abt money.. isn't it? I thot u took me for enuf wen we separated!!"

He got up n left immediately.. n leaving an evelope wid a bundle of notes on d table.. he left!!

I kept staring at his retreating figure.. it was nvr abt money.. for me it was alwaz abt him.. abt "us"!!

I cud hardly sleep at nyt.. all d events since maan had cm bk in our lives flashed in front of my eyes..!! I knew I had not behaved sensibly 2de n probably hurt him! But I just cant understand wht exactly maan is trying to do n more importantly why?!! 2nyt meaningless exchange of words had just added more distance between us!! Probably I had played too defensive n thus we had ended on another wrong note!! Made we wonder if we r d same two people who had at one tym understood d odr widout hving 2 voice it!!

What added insult to injury was d large amount of money he had left behind!! I had kept it in d cupboard safely wid evry intension to return it to him asap!! Even d sight of it irked me n it was a burden I had to get rid of soon!!

The sun had just risen, twas just arnd 5am.. as I dressed up and drove to d hotel wer he was staying!! I was hopin he wasn't upn I'd just shove d envelope under his door n leave immediately!! But just as I bent down to push d envelope, d door opened!! Thr stood maan dressed only in his tracks, guess he was just out of d shower.. his wet hair n fresh aftershave proving it!! It took my breath away!!

I hadn't even given it a thot b4.. btw id geet arnd it only brought bk memories of our honeymoon.. she still remembered abc lodge.. it only made me feel sad at wht we'd lost out on.. the entire nyt got lost in dese thots.. unable to sleep I went to tk an early shower.. I came out dressed in my tracks n stood by d window wondering wht d future had in store for us?!!

I saw a land rover stop by d hotel n dint hv 2 c d no to know it was mine!! Bt wht was geet doin here so early in d mrng? I rushed to d door just in tym to see her trying to push smthng under my door.. on looking closely I realized 'twas d envelope I had left for her..

"u're up?!!"

"y.. I shudn't b..?"

"no.. I mean.. nvr mind.. just tk dis bk"

"geet.. I left it for u.."

"I know.. bt plz.."

"y don't u come in.. we'll wake up evry1 like dis.."

She sighed n walked in.. n stood by d window.. as she turned n our eyes met, I cud cleary make out d fatigue n turmoil in dose hazels.. clearly I wasn't d only one who had spend a sleepless nyt!!

"plz.. just tk dis n lets get done wid dis.. u've already done a lot for us.. n its more than enuf for a lifetym!!"

I dint know hw to react to dose words.. did she mean gratitude for my recent help or pain of our separatn.. whtevr it was I ignored it

"luk geet.. u r nt understanding..'

"u r ryt maan.. m not understanding nythng.. u, ur words, ur action.. nthng.. its confusing me.."

She walked upto me n thrust d envelope in my hands

"U already provide us wid an allowance for maahi n evn help bauji.. I thot u'd understand wht I feel abt dis money.. I ve never been a kept woman, n don't intend 2 bcm one.."

Tkin a deep breath, she continued..

"u've changed maan.. or is tht wht miss rathod has done to u? or is it numerous women b4 her.. u've probably even lost count!! Bt m sure tht'll b more thn enuf to mk up for by one mistake?"

She took a step 2wds me..we were just an inch away fm each othr.. her breath almost fanning my face.. bt her eyes depicted an unguarded pain..
