Chapter 42
As the strains of Kurbaan Hua began to play throughout the room, it's various occupants displayed a wide range of emotions at the sight playing out in front of them. As Maan drew his arms around Geet's stomach and began to dance with her, Sasha felt her mouth hit the floor. Unable to take another shock, she grabbed the nearest alcoholic drink she could find and downed it in one gulp. Pinky just smiled, quite happy that her friend's husband turned out to be her boss and that they were enjoying themselves at the party. She too hoped that someone would ask her to dance, perhaps the cute Adi.
Rahul smirked and sipped his drink, imagining himself in Maan's place as he danced with Geet. Mr. Chopra thought the couple looked made for each other, and mentioned it to Savitri. She just smiled at how her plan had worked out, before excusing herself to freshen up. The other office staff, surprised to see their employer dancing, soon decided to follow his lead by finding themselves partners. All this while Maan and Geet continued to dance as if they were lost in their own little world.
When the music came to an end, Geet suddenly began to be conscious of the situation and how close they both were. Feeling his hand splayed against her waist, she slowly took hers off his chest and moved it down to his. Considering their personal situation, she felt it was awkward for him to be holding her in such a way. Removing his hand gently, she looked at his face, trying to understand what had been his purpose in dancing with her like that. Before she could ask him, he gave her one hard look and left the dance floor.
"Sasha...I mean Ma'am. Can you believe what just happened? DD was dancing with that behenji like she was really his wife!" exclaimed Tasha, pointing at the space where Geet stood in the middle of the floor.
"Shut up Tasha!" cried Sasha, unable to handle the truth. Heading back to the bar, she demanded, "Give me a shot of your strongest!"
"Whiskey?"
"That's fine." Sasha grabbed the glass as soon as it was placed on the counter, downing it in just a few seconds while Tasha watched in fascination.
Sasha looked back over her shoulder at the young woman who had gone from being a pain to enemy number one. She could see that Rahul guy walking up to Geet to talk with her. Sasha glared at Geet's back, wishing she could burn a hole through the behenji. It seemed like every man in the room was behind that annoying witch. First MK and now Rahul.
"What does she have, that I don't have?" Sasha growled, desperate to find some way to trouble her enemy. "Bloody cheap acting chudail. Give me another shot!"
Slamming the shot glass on the counter once she had finished her second shot of whiskey, Sasha got up, a plan having formed in her head. She didn't bother to think about the possible consequences, not with the buzz that she was experiencing after three drinks. No, all she was concerned about was taking revenge from Geet. Motioning to Tasha, Sasha walked stealthily up behind Geet, reaching out with her heal to catch the back of the unsuspecting girl's saree. After that move, Tasha came along to complete the damage, leaving Geet struggling to hold on to her torn garment.
"Maan what are you doing out here?" he heard coming from the end of the hall, entirely unaware of what had happened to Geet.
Looking down to see his grandmother coming toward him, her question reverberated in his mind. He couldn't tell her that he had left the party because he was trying to figure out what was happening to him. He didn't know why he had danced with Geet like that instead of letting her go like she wanted. He also didn't know why she seemed so upset about the divorce. After all, neither of them had married willingly, and she had her boyfriend back in Hoshiarpur.
None of these things were anything that he could tell Savitri, so Maan just said, "Dadima, I thought that you were enjoying the party."
"I was, but I needed to step out to the restroom for a moment. Then on my way back I ran into an old friend I hadn't seen for a few years. But Maan, why are you out here? Have you left Geet alone to entertain the clients? Maan, that is just not done. She may have arranged the party, but that does not mean you should leave her to fend for herself."
Savitri's gentle reprimand made Maan realize that he hadn't just left Geet alone in the party, but that he had left her standing in the middle of the dance floor. After Savitri revealing the truth of their marriage and the way they danced together, he could only imagine what impression his leaving her would leave. Determining that he should go back, not only to ask for forgiveness for the way he left, but also to request Geet that they both should keep their personal affairs separate from work issues.
With determined strides, Maan quickly walked back to the party. Upon entering the room, he noticed that the music was stopped and everyone seemed to be looking at the middle of the floor. Breaking through the crowd, Maan saw that Geet was standing by herself, making small attempts to walk, that were hampered by her need to hold on to her ripped saree. Maan couldn't understand why no one was trying to help her, and he strode forward, placing his jacket around her before he even considered his actions.
Geet looked up at Maan in wonder, surprised that he had come back. For some reason, she was less surprised that he had covered her with his own jacket. Though the tears of embarrassment continued to flow, Geet felt better with him by her side. Instinctively she knew that Maan would help her in any way that he could.
"Come with me," he said quietly, "we'll find you something else you can wear to go home."
Geet tried to move, but as soon as she did, she could feel the saree slipping. "If I move, I'm afraid my saree will open."
Maan wasn't about to leave Geet alone in this state, so he said, "You hold on tight to your saree. I will hold on to the jacket. That will be good enough."
Placing one hand on either shoulder, Maan carefully guided Geet out of the party hall and away from prying eyes. It was not easy, but eventually Maan took her to a less crowded area of the hotel where she could sit on a bench. Promising to get something she could wear, Maan left to check out the hotel's shops. Unfortunately they were all closed. Not knowing quite what to do, he decided to go back to the party to find Savitri.
"Adi, have you seen Dadima," he asked, uncaring that the party seemed to have started again in his absence.
"Yes, Sir," Adi answered. "Actually, she asked Pinky and me about you and Geet."
"We told her what happened," added Pinky quietly. "She left to look for both of you."
Maan didn't bother to thank the two employees, preferring not to waste any time. This did not go unnoticed by them, nor Sasha and Tasha, who were standing nearby. Adi and Pinky were both glad that Maan had been there to take care of their friend. They would have helped too, if needed, but both felt that it really was the right of a husband to protect his wife's honor that they had witnessed. Contrarily, Sasha just felt that she had witnessed a tragedy.
"Tasha, I need to get dunked," she said as she watched her boss leave the room.
"What?"
"Drunk. Smashed. Trashed. Tree shees to the wind. Intoxkited. Me."
"I think you already are, Sasha."
"Then I need to get more drunk. Otherwise I'll have to kill someone."
Sasha went back to the bar to drown her sorrows, not wanting to even think about Maan and Geet together. Maan, on the other hand, was trying to decided if he should find Savitri, or go back to Geet. Going back to Geet won, and when he turned the corner to the spot where she sat, he stopped for a moment. Tears were trailing down her cheeks as she stared into space. Sitting down next to her, he offered his handkerchief to dry her tears. When she couldn't quite get them all, he reached over to wipe the remaining ones away from her cheek.
His touch was so gentle that Geet closed her eyes briefly while his fingers slid over her smooth skin. Looking into his face, which showed only concern at that moment, Geet thought that she could not understand him at all. Sometimes he got so angry, she didn't know how to react. Other times, like right now, he was so kind she almost couldn't believe it. His eyes held hers in an almost unbreakable gaze that lasted until Savitri found them.
Taking charge of the situation, Savitri helped Geet adjust both her saree and Maan's jacket so that she could walk more freely. Telling Maan that she would see Geet home, Savitri took the young girl with her, first seeing to it that Geet could change back into her salwar kameez. Promising that Geet would feel better after a good night's sleep, she whisked her away, back to Khurana Mansion.
"Dadima, I don't want to work at KC any more, not after what happened," said Geet once they had arrived home. From Geet's tone, Savitri could tell there was something more than just the saree malfunction bothering Geet.
