Chapter 1:
He didn't like the idea of riding an elevator all the way to twelfth floor. He was getting late for the meeting which made him all the more weary; he couldn't take the stairs in that case. The building was almost empty given how it was onset of a long weekend and it was already quarter to eight in evening. His friend had sent a frantic text which demanded his presence at his friend's workplace. He had known Dev for more than a decade so he knew for a fact that Dev wouldn't send a text message like that unless the situation demanded it.
He juggled between the idea of taking the stairs and taking elevator. But when his cellphone buzzed with another text message from Dev, he slid into elevator in a rush and occupied a corner. Panic set in him when the doors started to close. At the back of his mind a tiny rational part which wasn't touched by any sort of emotion reminded him that he still hadn't pressed a floor button. He decided to give it all up and run out of the elevator and take the damn stairs. Before his panic fuddled brain could proceed, a slender woman slid smoothly into the elevator. She smiled apologetically at him and pressed the button marked "12".
"Are you okay?" She asked him when she saw how pale he had turned. He was clutching his satchel close to his chest and had his eyes closed.
He nodded feebly. She shook her head in confusion, the curls of her hair bouncing on her shoulders. Before she could formulate a retort, the elevator screeched and stopped with sound of gears and levers accentuated due to silence.
And then everything became dark.
He opened his eyes and started to heave.
"I can't breathe," he said collapsing on the floor. She was crouching next to him in an instant. She had her cellphone out which was throwing faint light making the elevator not so dark. However it wasn't enough to stop him from having a panic attack.
"Hey, don't worry okay? I am sure it's a small technical glitch. We will be out before you know it," she said which didn't really reach his ears.
He was mumbling words which were incoherent and fear laced. She tried talking to him telling him to stop panicking and just breathe. With every passing second his fear consumed him more and more leaving a shaky man on the floor begging for light and space. His panic was escalating to dangerous levels and she was clueless. She made a quick call to her friend who she was visiting and reported the elevator malfunction. She saw the man curled up in a ball and rocking back making him look extremely pitiful and vulnerable.
Without knowing what to do, she pulled him to her and hugged him tight.
For seven seconds, there was no change in him. A throaty sigh blew on her neck sent shivers down her spine. His mumbling had stopped and he buried his nose in her hair and hugged her back pulling her closer. She instantaneously arched her spine which made their chest collide making her swallow a sigh of pleasure. She tightened the embrace and ran her hand in his hair whispering and cooing in his ear.
He had surrendered himself to the smell of forest, soft skin and curly hair. The memory of closed elevator plunged in darkness was going farther and farther from him as he inhaled her musky perfume. His breathing slowed down as he allowed the softness of her skin to sedate him and her words took him to a distant wonderland.
Neither realized when the lights came or when the elevator started to move.
They jumped out of their embrace when they heard their name was called.
"Maan!" A man on the other side of the elevator exclaimed.
"Geet!" A woman exclaimed next.
"What's going on?"
"Why are you two sitting on the floor and hugging?"
"My God! Are you guys alright?"
She opened her eyes to see two sets of eyes standing across the elevator with worry etched on their face. Only then she realized that she was in arms of a man which had loosened and was waiting for her to let go of him. Suddenly feeling embarrassed and exposed of a secret only she was aware of, she sprang to her feet and dashed out of the elevator leaving three confused people behind.
To be continued.
