Chapter 13:

After Maan volunteered to help, things had become slightly easier. He took care of research while she made the necessary calls and met people. It didn't take her long to figure out that Maan wasn't really a people person. Nayantara, being the person who liked control, had decided to organize every little thing with respect to party and Geet had played along. Geet also believed that being closely associated with planning made the entire thing more personal. She did want to give her best friends a wonderful day that the two of them would remember for the rest of their lives. It was the day they were going to announce to the world that they were going to be together for better or worse.

"You are a competitive person with supreme organizational skills by nature, aren't you?" Maan asked looking at Geet's binder with all the information neatly filed. Her profession was far from being an event planner but it was her natural tendency to be thorough.

Every evening Geet left office a little early to pick up Maan and the two ran errands around the city. Even if there wasn't a thing to do on a particular day, they still met anyway. It was one of those days.

"It's not that I am overly competitive, you know? Just enough to get by and make sure that no opportunity that is presented to me is lost." She replied sipping green tea.

Maan looked up from his mug and asked, "Then why did you let go of Dev?" Geet choked on mouthful of green tea, staining her beige shirt in the process. She doesn't see anything but curiosity in Maan's eyes. For him, it was just a statement that contradicted one of her actions.

She took the tissues he handed wordlessly and wiped her mouth first and proceeded to wipe her shirt. "I'll get you a dry shirt," Maan said and disappeared to fetch it for her.

She sat still waiting for Maan, his words swimming in her head. Didn't people say that one need to fight for what they love? Back then it hadn't made sense because she didn't believe in investing in a relationship. And since the person was Dev with unresolved issues towards his ex, the decision had come easily.

"Here you go."

Maan stood in front of her with a t-shirt in his hand. She accepted it with hint of smile and stood awkwardly. Where should she change?

"I have switched on the lights in my room," Maan pointed towards the doorway and cocked his head, motioning her to go inside.

Geet came back couple of minutes later to find Maan standing at the same spot waiting for her to return. "Throw it in the laundry hamper Geet. I'll do a load tonight and it will be as good as new," he said.

Geet's fingers clutched her stained shirt tightly. Things had shifted between them after they spent the night in observatory. She had taken a cab while he had walked home. When their fingers brushed while both tried to open the cab door, Maan didn't react at the contact while her heart ricocheted in her ribcage.

She hoped this stupid attraction towards the seemingly complex yet a simplistic man standing in front of her would melt away with passing time.

"Geet?" She heard him call her. She shook her head to shake away unnecessary thoughts and smiled gratefully at his concern.

"Nice t-shirt," she said instead looking at pretty picture of night sky on its front. It was two sizes big on her but the soft cotton was comfortable.

Maan smiled wanly. "Last year there was this seminar on astronomy and photography where many such photos unreleased to public were shown for the first time. I got a couple of dozen photos and printed them on t-shirts." He replied.

When Maan spoke about his field of work, she could see the passionate man he truly was. His social awkwardness disappeared and his general dislike for public speaking vanished. He stopped being the shy introvert and spoke with confidence and authority.

"It's beautiful," she replied softly running her hand on her chest, her fingers tracing the outline of the crab nebula.

"It looks good on you. You can keep it." Maan mentions moments later.

Geet bit her lip and holds the smile spreading across her face and nods. "Thank you," she replied simply.

There are no phone calls to make or people to meet yet they spend most part of the evening at his house. Geet teaches him a recipe her mother used to make during lax days and when one generally felt lazy to use too many utensils. Maan sat next to sink, feet dangling and reading a book while Geet chopped vegetables and bustled around his kitchen to cook her famous one pot meal. The silence between them wasn't awkward and an odd camaraderie started to develop between the two.

"I am competitive but I don't like to chase where losing is the inevitable outcome," Geet said abruptly. Maan looked up from the book he was reading and frowned.

"Such an eventuality doesn't exist unless of course you never understood the problem itself," Maan replied.

Geet chuckled. "I think that was my problem too, you know? With Dev things were easy. We were good friends before and the parameter was extended a little and we were both comfortable with renewed relationship status."

"What went wrong?" He was curious.

"That's the thing. Nothing was wrong. Nayantara reentered our lives and being who I am stopped being enough for our relationship." She shrugged.

Maan didn't look convinced. "But, why? You are a fantastic person and have an amazing personality." He asked frankly.

Geet ducked her head and let her curls cover her reddened cheeks. Knowing Maan it was probably a deduction he made after knowing her for several weeks. But her dumb heart lapped it up as a compliment directed towards her.

She shrugged again. "Heart wants what the heart wants Maan." She said, looking straight in his eye. His eyes softened at her revelation and nodded. Of course he understood what she meant.

Once the meal was ready, Geet carried the pot while Maan carried cutleries to living room. They were in middle of second serving when the doorbell rang.

It was Nayantara.
