Zindagi... Tum se Hai
"What do you think Geet, Pink or Blue?" he asked holding two dresses in each of his hand and raising them to his sides as he inspected both of them carefully. "Pink" he heard and sighed. "Why not that's your favourite colour isn't it?" he said mockingly and then to avoid any brawl with his wife he quickly continued, "ok ok... I know... Pink is the colour for girls"... "Jaante hain toh poochte kyun hain?" she asked and he shrugged his shoulders in response. "Now won't you go to dress her up? You know she won't let anyone near her" she said reminding him of the stubborn nature of his daughter. "Someone is jealous" he said with a smirk. "Which mother won't be?" she retorted. "It's ok baby... Geet and Maan are one right? Toh kya farak padta hai?" he gave her a deep dimpled smile and she sighed. She couldn't retort at that one now, could she? "You know how to play your cards" she whined. He chuckled, "2 years of dating... one year after being officially engaged... and then 7 years of marriage... we have been together for 10 years now... I would be damned if I fail to understand you" he said earnestly. "You were never a man of too many words" she said after about a moment while he went over to the wardrobe to pull out a shirt for himself. "You are responsible for that... tumhari adat lag gayi hai mujhe" he said with a hint of displeasure in his voice. "Do you want to start all over again now?" she snapped. "Alright, peace, okay?" he said holding up his palm and crossing his fingers.
He then turned back holding a black shirt and a grey tie in his hand. "You haven't disposed that tie yet?" she said with a hint of disapproval. "Why should I?" he asked. "Oh please that's 7 years old" she sighed in exasperation. "That's the first gift you bought for me after marriage" he snapped as he got dressed. "That's quite a girlie thing you know to cherish such small things" she giggled. He rolled his eyes, "now who's starting it?" he asked annoyed. "Ok baba truce. Achcha now hurry, your daughter by now would have chewed up Nakul Kaka's brains" she said. "Yeh achcha hai... whenever she does anything that garners appreciation she's your daughter and when she throws tantrums and act difficult she is pushed on to me" he complained and she laughed. "There's so much to do" he said checking his day's schedule on his blackberry. "And you refuse to hire an assistant" she said as a matter of fact. They had already had numerous fights over this and he had always been adamant on handling things by himself. "You know I can't trust anyone" he replied in the similar tone. "Hmm" she grunted and then, "7'o clock tonight... you remember right?" she asked pretending to act nonchalant but he could hear the sudden sadness in her voice. "Of course Mishti. How can I forget it?" he assured her. "Ok then... see you at 7" she said as he rushed out of the door.

"Nakul kaka... abhi tak mera school bag bhi ready nahi hua?" little Khushi complained as she stood on the stairs with her hands folded across her chest. "Abhi wohi karne ja raha hoon Khushi bitiya" replied Nakul as he moved past her in haste. "Ratan chahcha... ratan chacha" she yelled over the top of her voice as she pushed back the hair falling in her eyes with the back of her hand. "Ji... ji Khushi bitiya?" he came running wiping his hand with a hand towel. "Badi Mumma ko dhood diya?" she asked placing her hands on her hips. "wohi bana raha tha" he said quickly. Khushi's frown deepened as she turned her eyes to the clock. "Chacha its 9:05. Weren't you suppose to give it to her by 9" she asked through gritted teeth. The poor guy gulped the lump in his throat. "S... so... sorry Bitiya" he stuttered. "Sorry? (wagging her index finger towards the poor man cutely) chacha aap roz late hote ho aur roz sorry bolte ho" she shook her head to and fro in disappointment. "Kal se no mistake" she said making a point. And just then she heard a chuckle and turned to see Maan looking at her in amusement. The minute she saw him, she slapped her small palm on her forehead. He straightened at once as Khushi walked over to him. "uf fo Papa... aap yahan khade hoke has rahe ho... don't you have a meeting to attend at 11" she said and then raised her hands asking him to pick her up.
Maan lifted Khushi in his arms. "Hmm and who told you about it" he asked her using his long fingers to soothe her unkempt bed hair. "Adi Uncle" she replied innocently. "hmm" he grunted making a mental note to deal with Adi. His most trusted employee was becoming more of an informer for his daughter. Wasn't it just yesterday that he had reported Khushi about him skipping his lunch? His daughter had given him a hard time at the dining table rebuking his ignorance while she stuffed him with all the delicacies. "Papa you remember the day right?" she asked him as she encircled her tiny arms around his neck. "Yes sweetheart" he said carrying her to her room. Once in her room, Maan quickly put her on her feet and she rushed to have her shower while Maan inspected her school bag, her shoes and her pencil box. Once done, he glanced around the room and smiled as he observed the tidy room. The moment Khushi stepped out, Maan picked her up and brought her to the middle of the room. Picking up the towel, he dried her hair and asked, "Beta, I hope you have kept your homework books in the bag?". Quickly slipping into her pinafore, she said, "don't worry papa. I did it" Maan smiled. Unlike the other kids of her age, Khushi was a very responsible child. Right from this small age she was a perfectionist. She was a care taker of the family. Mature beyond her age. He was proud of her and his Mishti. For he knew the strong foundations on which Khushi's personality operated was set by her mother, his Mishti who always taught Khushi to maintain a balance in her life.
He felt a tug on his hand and was pulled back from his thoughts. "Papa, no skipping lunch today or else I'm going to complain mumma about it" she said wearing a stern look. He gulped feigning to be scared, "Please don't do that. Your mom is going to eat me alive" Khushi covered her mouth with her hands and giggled. "Chale?" he asked. She held his hand and smiled, "yes". He picked her bag and was about to walk out when she jerked her hand away and said, "oops... main toh bhool hi gayi" making a sorry face. Smiling a little, he walked out leaving Khushi behind.
Minutes later, Khushi followed Maan to Dadi Ma's room and jumped on the bed beside her. "Good Morning Badi Mumma" she said. "Apni mumma ko bye bol aayi aap" Savitri Devi asked. Khushi nodded gleefully. "Aapko pata hai Badi Mumma, papa mumma se darte hain" she said in her ears but was loud enough for Maan to hear and so Dadi Ma chuckled while Maan glared at her. "Arre, Geet hi toh hai jo aapke papa ko line pe le aayi... warna aapke papa toh naak pe makkhi na bethne dete" Savitri Devi said smugly. "Dadi Maa" Maan said sternly. "Aankhen na dikhayi, warna hum abhi jaake Geet se aapki complain kar denge" she warned. Maan rolled his eyes while both the ladies chuckled but then Khushi's eyes fell on the bedside table. "Badii Mummaa" Khushi called and narrowed her eyes while Savitri Devi bit her tongue. Khushi then turned to Maan who turned away and looked everywhere but at her. "Hey Babaji... pata nahi main na hoon toh is ghar ka kya ho" saying she picked the glass of water and the tablets from the table and handed it to Dadi Ma. Savitri Devi chuckled, "Bilkul apni mumma ki tarah hain aap" she said affectionately patting her cheeks before taking her medicines. Khushi grinned ear to ear and then both father and daughter left. Savitri Devi sighed.
After dropping Khushi to school, Maan headed straight to his office. Pinky was now serving as his secretary. The only girl Geet would trust around her husband.
Out of the blue he remembered the incident when he had appointed a secretary, Sasha. The first time Geet saw her, the look on her face told him that he was in trouble. Yes, he had disliked Sasha too for her flashy dressing style and not to mention the girl was ready to throw her on him at the drop of a hat. He was just discussing glitches in the blue print with her when Geet had walked in. The girl stayed too close to him for the comfort of his wife and her eyes had nearly popped out of its sockets when she had seen Sasha bending and revealing her deep cleavage in front of Maan on the pretext of picking up the file kept on the other side of the desk. Instantly, Geet had got her transferred to the Gurgaon branch. If that was not all she had made him sponsor a secretarial course for Pinky and since then Pinky served as his secretary. This was 6 years back though.
"Sir, aapki aaj Noida project ko leke clients ke saath meeting hai" Pinky reminded him following him into his cabin. "Kitne baje?" he asked. "6 in the evening" she replied. He whipped around and narrowed his eyes at her. "You know what would be the consequences?" he asked. "Of course... Khushi will bring the whole house down" she chuckled. "That's not funny Pinky. Do you how upset Geet will be? You and your husband are surely going to get me killed by my daughter" he said accusingly. "Don't worry sir, the clients were asking for it... but I got it rescheduled" Pinky assured him. "Where's Adi?" he asked. "I'm here sirrr" he came in holding a folder in his hand. "Mr. Aditya Mehra, you didn't have to call Khushi yesterday" he said walking over to the other side of the desk and placing his hands over the desk. "Sirr... Khushii ko pata chalta ki I didn't tell her toh aapke saath saath meri bhi chutti ho jaati" Adi stuttered while Maan looked at him sternly. Pinky stifled her laughter and excused herself. Later Maan and Adi busied themselves with work.
The day went by as a routine. Time and again he called his Dadi Ma to be updated about Khushi. Well that was a part of his routine work. Khushi did call at lunch time to check whether her papa ate his lunch or not. And then she called exactly at 6 in the evening asking if he had left the office. The moment she called, Maan packed his laptop, kissed Geet's picture and whispered, "I'll be there soon Mishti" and made a dash towards the door.
An hour later Maan and Khushi stood outside a glass door. Khushi dressed in a beautiful pink frock, holding her small teddybear in one hand, her other hand was securely held by Maan who was holding a bouquet of fresh yellow tulips in his other hand. She looked up expectantly at him who gave her a small encouraging smile before he gulped the lump in his throat and opened the door. And then he entered and for a moment, as usual forgot to breathe. Disappointment rushed through him once again as the silence around the room welcomed them. Tried as much, he never failed to expect a miracle though he knew the illusion was only going to break his heart always. And like every time it happened again. "Maan" he heard the soft whisper of his wife and despite himself smiled or faked one for the sake of their daughter. "I knew you would keep your words" she said. "I had to" he whispered. He looked at the flowers and shifted his attention to the table beside the bed. Leaving Khushi's hand, he walked over to it and pulled out the withered flowers from the vase and placed the fresh ones in place. "Thank you. I love them" he heard her again. Choked with emotions, he managed to give her a nod.
"Not again" she said exasperated. He grimaced and proceeded towards the bed. Khushi was already sitting beside the still figure on the bed. Carefully, she was running her small hands over the forehead of the person before she bend down to softly peck the person on the cheek and then said, "Happy Birthday Mumma"
It was Geet's birthday... the day on which an angel had descended this earth... a day which illuminated his life when that angel had walked into his life.
Walking back onto his memory lane he remembered how he had met the girl who became the focus of his life...
Flashback
It was raining. Seated comfortably on the backseat of his BMW he was talking to someone on the phone when he felt someone tapping on his car window. Frowning at the intrusion, he lowered the window glass to see a messy form of a girl who was frowning down at him. She was drenched from head to toe... her curly hair messed while her white dress was soiled. "What is it?" he asked irritated. She glared at his driver for an instance and then turned back to him, "your driver... he spoiled my dress" she said pointed at herself. It was then he realized that the driver must have splashed dirty water on the girl. But then he was Maan Singh Khurana, not the one to accept his mistake. Pulling out his wallet, he pulled a 500 rupee note and handed it to her, "get it dry cleaned" he said in a huff and pulled the window up while giving a hard glare to his driver who looked down immediately in fear. Just then the signal turned green but the moment his driver turned the ignition on, he saw the same girl standing in front of the car. "STOP!" he yelled. Then bending down, she picked up a rock from the road and raised her hand taking an aim for the front glass while he looked on in horror. She then raised her eyebrow and lowering her hand, bend down and his time using all her force smashed the headlight of the car. "WHAT THE HELL! " He swore and then looked at the driver who immediately got down with an umbrella and opened his side of the door for him to step out. Getting out of his car in a huff, he walked towards her taking long stride and went to stand in front of her. With her hands across her chest, she stood there wearing a triumphant smile. But before he could say a word, she stopped him. Holding his one hand, she brought it forward and placed the same note on his palm. "Please hand this over to the mechanic who would repair this light as a tip from my end." Saying she flashed him the most beautiful smile he had ever seen and then left the place. He stood rooted in his place trying to figure out what exactly had just happened. And when the wavering voice of his driver calling his attention towards the traffic that had accumulated at the junction because of his car pulled him back to his surroundings, he found himself smiling despite himself and at that point he knew that this chance meeting was meant to be much more than a mere coincidence.
"Papa... papa..." he felt the tug at the hand and looked down to see Khushi calling him."Papa... when will adi uncle and Pinky Massi come?" she asked him. "Soon beta" he said and turned his attention to Geet. His Geet... who after that chanced encounter changed everything around him... who turned his glum life to something that was worth living for... who taught him to laugh... who taught him to stay happy... who loved him unconditionally... who gave him Khushi... who gave him a family... who gave him a life beyond his office and work... and who now laid still and quiet on this hospital bed for past two years deep in slumber, oblivious to the occurrences around her.
Geet... his Mishti was comatose!!!
Maan shut his eyes to fight back the pain that threatened to spill on his cheeks. "Phir se nahi Maan, you know I can't see you in pain" her voice rang in his head once again. He bend closer to her ear and said, "I'm sorry Mishti. Happy Birthday" said that he kissed her forehead and pulled back with a smile on his face. He was not going to do anything that would upset her or what he knew she wouldn't approve of.
Just then Adi and Pinky pushed open the door. "Happy Birthday Geet" they said in unison and revealed a huge chocolate cake. Maan brought forward stool for them to place the cake while Khushi ran to Pinky. "Mumma ka favourite cake hai na?" she asked. Bending over, Pinky kissed Khushi's cheek and nodded for yes. Beaming, Khushi said, "mera bhi... (turning to see Geet) mumma aapki aur meri choice ek jaisi hai na" said that she turned her attention back to the cake. Maan who was sitting on the bed beside Geet, looked at her too. "chalo, chalo cake kaat te hain" Pinky said cheerfully catching on Maan's expressions. Pinky and Geet had been childhood friends, a bond that strengthened with time. Pinky came from a modest background who did odd jobs to support her education. After Maan started dating Geet, the first thing Geet asked from Maan was to see if he could accommodate Pinky in Khurana Constructions. A gesture that had touched both Pinky and Maan deeply... it was the least Maan could do for her and this was how Pinky came at Khurana Constructions as the receptionist. Soon she found her dream guy in the chief accountant of the company, Adi and then went on to become Maan's secretary. Adi and Pinky stood by the Khuranas all the while. They had been with them when Geet and Maan got married. They were there when Khushi was born. And they were there when the catastrophe struck the family. Since then Pinky had treated Khushi as her own daughter. She was the one who consoled and soothed the scared child when even Maan was not in his command.
"Masi, I'm going to have the bigger piece both my and mumma's share" Khushi chimed. "You can have everyone's shares sweetheart" Pinky said affectionately.
"All of you are doing a good job spoiling my kid" Maan heard Geet again. "Yes it's because; when you wake up you have some damage control to do" Maan pressed Geet's palm. After a moment of silent, he heard again, "Will that day ever come?" Taking a deep breath he replied silently, "just try harder Geet... don't lose hope... we need you... Khushi needs you... I need you" he finished. "I know Maan. I'm trying." He could feel the helpless tone in her voice. Just then Adi came forward and placed a hand on Maan's shoulder. Taking a deep breath to gather his thoughts, Maan finally turned to Adi. Adi smiled at him and said, "Chaliye sir, let's cut the cake" Maan nodded in positive and went over to the table. They stood around leaving the side of the table which faced Geet empty. And then Maan and Khushi together cut the cake. It was a very emotional moment, yet everyone tried to remain cheerful for the other. This was not the first time that they were celebrating Geet's birthday together, yet the better days were not clouded by dwindling hopes and eerie silence.
As the evening progressed, Maan watched as Adi and Pinky indulged Khushi fulfilling her demands and bearing her tantrums while he sat beside Geet holding her hand through the evening. As night set in, after Adi and Pinky left the family alone, he watched silently when Khushi came and sat beside Geet. She told her anything and everything about home, school, Maan, Dadi Ma, office... every little thing. He looked as she sadly told Geet how her friends' mothers would come to pick them up and drop them to school. How they would flaunt the tiffins their moms had packed for them. "Mumma, papa says you are sleeping. How much longer are you going to sleep?" she asked innocently. The words cut through him and he grappled with himself to remain strong. "Mumma, you know I'm never going to speak with Vicky" she complained. "Why so?" Maan asked gently. Teary eyed, she replied, "He says, mumma will never come back home. He says he saw it on TV." Maan silently took her in his arms and said, "Let people say what they want. Don't let them affect you. Your mumma will come back" he finished softly stroking her hair. "Sachchi?" she asked. Smiling a little, Maan said yes and then quickly wiping her tears, Khushi turned to Geet, "Mumma, I know you will come home. I love you" said that she bent to kiss Geet and then holding her face in her little palms she quietly watched her mother and drifted off to sleep beside her, holding her.
Maan got engrossed in watching his two angels. He watched as Geet's rhythmic breathing caused her chest to rise and fall. Holding her from the other side, he gently placed his head over her heart to capture the sound of her heartbeats and then gently pecked her over her heart. "I know it beats for me" he whispered. "It does Mr. Khurana. You are crazy enough to hold on to the fragments even now" she said grimly. "I love you" he replied. "Take her home Maan." Geet urged. "Leaving you behind is difficult" he said. "There's a life beyond this" he heard. "And that's not for me" he replied into his head. She took a sigh before she said, "For Khushi" he glared at her angrily, "you know how to get me to hear you" he whined. "That's 10 years for knowing you" she reminded him. He smiled as he heard her chuckle and then picking Khushi in his arms, looking behind once, he left for the mansion.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
He came back home after a tiring day at work to face the terrible and terrifying news of Khushi's accident. His stomach churned as his heart leapt to his throat. The word "Accident" rang in his ears. Khushi had met with an accident. Throwing away his bag, he ran upstairs. He was scared... scared to lose the only reason for whom he had held himself together. As he raced upto Khushi's room, memories of that unfateful day plagued his mind. His heart raced wildly and then he threw the door open only to make Dadi Ma turn to him and to make Khushi jump on the bed. "Papa... The door to my room is not meant for you to practise your Tai Chi" she said making a face. But Maan heard none of it and he pulled her gently and embraced her tightly. Dadi smiled knowingly while Khushi frowned, "Papa... door was a better option to try your tai chi lessons" she said. Both Maan and Dadi Ma chuckled at her comment. Maan pulled her away and kissing the top of her head, eyed her carefully and frowned watching the bandage on her left leg knee. "Khushi, yeh..." he asked touching the bandage. "Yeh... yeh toh bas aise hi... main gir gayi thi" she replied in nonchalance.
Maan frowned, "Khushi, how many times have I told you to be careful" he reproached her. Khushi gave a cute pout and turned to dadi ma, "Badi Mumma, dekhiye na papa ko" Savitri Devi put her arms around Khushi and pulled the child in her lap. "Bachchi hai Maan... don't worry... ab khelenge toh thodi bohut chot toh lagti hi rehti hai" she tried to calm her grandson but Maan was still sulking. Khushi looked at Dadi ma and then getting up from her lap, she went and kissed Maan on her cheek, "I'm fine papa" Maan held her close and pulled her to him. "Your Mumma would be angry when she finds this out" he told her. Khushi turns to Geet's picture placed on the table near her bed and picks it up, "sorry mumma, I promise I'll take good care of myself" she said holding some skin at the base of her neck in her fingers. Taking the picture from Khushi's hand, he looks at it and said, "Your mumma says ok" Khushi smiled and then holding Geet's picture goes to sleep.
Maan didn't leave Khushi for even a second. Only he knew what emotions he went through when he got to know of Khushi's accident. It was one such accident that had taken Geet so far away from him. Standing by the window he remembered the day that had changed everything.
Flashback
He was in the meeting when Pinky barged into the conference room to inform him about the disaster. Losing a grip over his surroundings, he made a mad dash towards the hospital. Geet had met with an accident. Apparently, she had lost her control over the car and the car had banged into the tree. There were severe injuries on her body but the most ghastly one was there on her head. Doctors feared the worst and he felt his life slipping out of his hands. Hours later, Doctors appeared from the operation theatre and placing a comforting hand over his shoulder informed him that Geet had slipped into coma. His world shattered. Had it not been for Khushi, he would not have ever been able to bear this tragedy. Yes Pinky took care of Khushi as much as she could but then Khushi cried and craved for her mother. And the only person who could comfort the nervous child was her papa. And so Maan held himself together for his daughter... their daughter. Many people said the worst is inevitable but Maan didn't care. He resorted to the irrational mind talks with Geet to hold onto his sanity. She was not around... they knew but they never let her presence fade out in their lives. While Maan involved himself in mind talks, Khushi resorted to speaking to Geet's picture frame. Khurana mansion, the one that shone at the exterior, inwardly it was a house swathed by ambiguity. But they never left hope. It was hard, wisdom jeered at them but they hardly cared. They knew Geet will come back one day.
Present
"Papa..." Khushi called him and he rushed to her side. "Papa, Mumma ki yaad aa rahi hai?" she asked innocently and gently wiped his tears. Taking her hand, Maan kissed it. "mumma toh yahan hai" Khushi said holding out Geet's picture to him. Maan smiled at her daughter and watched in awe at how his daughter understood him so perfectly.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Days turned to weeks and weeks to months... nothing changed. Everything was habitual. And then one fine day Pinky barged into his meeting once again. Maan's eyes widened in fear as he looked at the tears in Pinky's eyes... He looked at her as he tried to gauge her expressions and then she broke into smile, "Sir, she's up!" For a second Maan couldn't move and then he dashed out startling the audience in the room, he ran like never before... he ran to embrace his life... his Geet... praying if this was a dream he was watching than let him live this dream to eternity. It rained... and by the time, he reached the hospital he was drenched. Doctors rushed in and out of her ward. He entered the room cautiously expecting her to smile at him. But her eyes were closed. The joy and the swell in his heart evaporated instantly. He hung his head and shut his eyes. And then he felt something warm and soft graze his wrist. His eyes snapped open as he welcomed the sight of his sunshine staring and smiling back at him.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
The days that followed, changed the picture of Khurana Mansion once again...
Khushi stepped down from the leadership position which was then taken over by her mom!
Maan was back at being the arrogant and angry man trying to throw his weight around but everytime his pretense failed miserably. He could never win his princesses.
The stubborn Khushi was always at a tug of war with her dearest papa over her mumma.
Like before, Dadi Ma found herself caught between her grandson and his wife. They hardly came to consensus and were found bickering over anything and everything.
A life-time ban on driving was imposed on Geet.
Maan could hardly let Geet off his sight. Worst of all he hardly let her sleep. Uh huh... don't think otherwise... the fact was he could at times still not believe that their nightmare was over... he would wake her up in the middle of the night several times just to ensure that she was fine... Initially she was touched and understood his concern but when the pattern continued for months at end, finally one night she snapped... "Enough Mr. Khurana... if you don't stop this now... I'm going to shift my belongings to Khushi's room." Geet threatened him. He frowned, "I'm worried. You have been latent for almost three long years". She snapped her head at him, "God this man! I wasn't completing my quota of sleep for this lifetime... I still need to sleep and rest" He grimaced, "And it's not my fault that sleep has evaded me". She sighed, "I'll ask my doctor to give you a prescription instead of me... that would surely help me... (and then mumbled) not that you do anything constructive staying awake." This time, he snapped his head at her, "what! What did you say?" she bit her tongue... she thought she was soft but he still heard it. Grinning like a fool, "nahi... kuch nahi... " he rolled his tongue and cocked his head as he looked at her mischievously, "constructive?? (leaning towards her) so you want me to do something constructive? Hmm... interesting..." his eyes grew intense. She gulped, "Maan it's already 2... I want to go back to sleep" she said nervously. "itni jaldi kya hai?" he said and in one swift move pulled the covers off her.
Nine months later, the Khurana family portrait completed as Khushi welcomed her baby brother home!!!
