Hey all,
This post is actually in response to the other post on 'Star One: Stop editing Geet', (hey Arwen, since i am a Newbie, IF doesnt allow me to post links, sorry ) and gives quantitative proof of the effects on the serial
I have actually been tracking Geet's storyline and its success as measured by TRPs, episode by episode.
i thought it would be interesting to share with you what the findings point to and how correct everybody's analysis has been..
So here are the findings, and after that are the implications
Findings
1. As expected, after the initial hype, the show began to pick up only after the entry of Maan, after there was some hope in the life of Geet... With the promise of a better tomorrow, people hung on to the show.
2. The shift to Delhi is where the serial started further picking up and with the 'Kurbaan hua' sequence, it went clearly ahead of competitors notably DMG... since then it has been No. 1
3. Most of the 'hot sequences' were what in media are called 'high points' and kept the serial's progress consistently high and it reached a high point of 1.6 TRPs
4. However, over the last one month or so, its progress has been slow and TRPs have kind of stabilised at around 1.0. this has basically happened around the time of Rasika Rathod, Pari etc.
Analysis and Implications
1. What has basically happend is that till then it was a very satisfying, logical and good progress of the story(of course gorgeous chemistry too). Since then there have been many twists and jerks and character introductions (Rasika, Pari, Meera, D-Mello, Sameera?) interrupting the flow and confusing people as to what the CVs want.
2. With the viewers confused about the intent and which way the serial is going, what happens is that over time many peripheral viewers move out and even loyalists pick and choose what parts they want to watch (in essence the reach goes down and this affects TRPs) if you have noticed, there are many episodes that even you guys want to skip
3. Thus, what happens that instead of newer people coming in and every viewer spending a lot of time watching it, people choose which episodes they want and while those episodes like 'Peeloon..' and 1 or 2 others will be seen, the others will be avoided - leading to constinuous ups and downs in the ratings.
4. so, the jerky editing, incomplete/ unfinished story arcs (the Chopra's & DMello's projects), erractic pace of storyline will further affect the TRPs. - this leads to more confusion as the CVs/ Channel try to get in quick fixes, which weakens the plot further.
In fact they could have very well built more on the office bit, Geet earning respect and reknown, exposing Sasha, Maan's contrition and piecing together the story, Geet & Maan's interactions in the outhouse (everyone was expecting some cute scenes there instead of the directly heated ones), scenes of just understanding between Geet, Adi, Pinky - all this would have helped make it more coherent, complete, satisfying viewers by playing out the full range of things they wanted, because essentially Geet like any Harry Potter (hehe sorry for the reference) has become an eco-system in itself where viewers know what is logical, what isnt.
Hope the people responsible pull up their socks and dont just let another good concept dither.
The good part is that in the recent episodes while there have been continuity issues (a lot of people bashed the 'Roop tera Mastana' sequence), this has been more the backlog of the earlier confusion. i really believe that RTM was well done (cheers to Gurti) and is a step in the right direction. i think the larger story is getting back on track with the issues, the chemistry and the chracters...
and i think this has been possible due to the vociferous protests by all the Maneetians , coz we all know that today Geet belongs as much to us as to the CVs, and the channels
Sorry for the long post, thought people might like to know how the TRPs respond to the story arcs and plot
