PART 7 – Last Part

He nearly abandoned it after Reason #9, but he kept on going - if only for Riddhima's sake. She deserved for him to know exactly what she hated.

And so it was that at 03:32 that night, Armaan set down the papers with a shocked, blank expression on his face, crawled out of bed like a sleepwalker, dug a leather-bound book out of his book bag, and slowly walked to the fifth year common room, still in a zombie-like trance. He knew she would be there. And he had to right this wrong.

He found her dozing, slumped in the comfy armchair he knew was her favorite of all of the common room. He slipped beside her, determined, and gently shook her awake. "Ridz?"

Ridz's eyes shot open and immediately focused on Armaan's. "armaan!"

Armaan slumped next to her, holding his hands up in mock-surrender. "Hold on, hold on! Please . . . listen to what I have to say. Please, just give me one chance - one chance - and I promise, if you still feel the same way after I talk to you, I won't bother you ever again, okay?"

Riddhima nodded stiffly, her gaze fixed on Armaan's posture, a far cry from the arrogant upholding she was so familiar with. "So?" she asked, when no explanation seemed in coming. "Out with it, Armaan."

Armaan sighed and ran his hand through his hair, looking at Riddhima sadly and determinedly. "Riddhima . . . I want to show you something. And," he added hastily, seeing Riddhima's furious look, "it isn't a book on baby's names this time. I promise."

Riddhima settled back in her chair but still did not say anything.

Armaan gently opened the leather-bound book he had dragged out of the dormitory to show her and gave it to her to look at.

Riddhima's breath caught in her throat. "Oh-"

It was a sketchbook - the same book she had seen him doodle in for years, concealing it behind his Chemistry textbook or his manual in Physics. But more amazing, it had been filled with three pages until the very last with sketches, poems, and crossed-out declarations of love - about her.

She saw herself, every year at Mamc –siiting under the tree.in the market shopping with anjali and muskaan.in the parlour with a face pack,showing her orange tongue after eating an ice-cream Scribbled in the margins were poems, lyric and soft, something she would have thought Armaan incapable of writing - but here it was, in black and white. Every few pages or so, a few scribbled lines would be crossed out, most of them beginning with, "Riddhima, I have no other way to say this-" and all looking to be failed beginnings at a speech.

Armaan was speaking again. "Riddhima, I've been trying to say this for years, but I never got it to come out right. Every time I was around you, you made me so nervous I acted like an idiot, and I'm sorry. I never got up the courage to tell you this, no matter how many times I've wanted to say this for five years."

He looked her straight in the eye, tilting up her chin gently, as he said softly, "I love you."

He continued, oblivious to Riddhima's startled look and said, "You want to know why I dumped all those girls? Because I knew they weren't right for me. I was a idiot to them, but I didn't know how to break the news gently - I tried, honestly, I really did! But every time I looked into their eyes I kept seeing your eyes. And I knew it would never work.

"I really dated them just to keep my mind off of you. It seemed like you would never like me. I tried, but every time I wanted to show you this, I wanted to ask you out for real, I got all tongue-tied, and it never made it all the way out. I like you - I like you a lot, and I really wanted to tell you this in a special kind of way. But atul would trip me up, or Rahul would make me more nervous by goading me on. I'll understand if you say you hate me - really, I will! - but I'm not going to let you off to another man before you know what I feel about you."

"Armaan-"

He wasn't listening. "I would never hurt you, Riddhima, you know that, right? I would never do anything to hurt you . . . I want you to be happy, even if it is with someone else. But . . . I wouldn't want to let you go without a fight. You make me happy, and no one else in the world can do that."

He sighed and he continued in a much more defeated voice, "Tonight . . . tonight I almost gave up. Really, if you don't like me that much, then I'll listen to you for once, get out of your face, and I'll stop pursuing you. I'll understand. But I've got to try - this one last time - and just make sure that I've done everything I can for you. So please, Riddhima . . . " he sighed and continued:

"Will you go out with me, Riddhima?"

Riddhima's face was stony, but there were tears swimming in her eyes. The words out of her mouth, however, were not what either of them expected: "Don't call me that."

Armaan's head jerked up, his eyes wide in confusion and disappointment. "What?"

"Don't call me Riddhima! Anjali, Muskaan, Rahul - they call me Riddhima. Not you. My name is Jaan."
