Chapter 2: PARENTAL LOVE...
PATEL RESIDENCE
"Mummy…main jaavu chu!" Sapna shouted towards the kitchen. She wanted to make sure that she was not late on her first day; she had to be at the hospital at 8.00 O'clock. It would take her at least half an hour to get there including all the Mumbai rush hour…
Oh God where's mum gone? Sapna thought. Just then her mum came with a pooja thaali (prayer tray).
Sapna quickly went to her mum and took her blessings, her mum blessed her and said
"Bhagwan kare tu ek kamyaab doctor bane ane taro aaj no divas saro jaye" (I pray to God that may you become a successful doctor and your first day goes well)
Listening to her mum praying for her success made Sapna all teary, and at the same moment she realised that her mum had not finished yet, that's when she heard her mum say "Oh ane Bhagwan maari dikri na lidhe ek saaro gujarati chokra mali jaya to main 101 naryal charavesh…" (Oh God help me find a decent gujarati boy for my daughter, and ill make 101 coconut offerings in the mandir) She knew it was too good to be true… her mum not mentioning about her marriage…
She laughed inside as she heard her mum quietly mumble to herself "…Aa Jignesh tau bahu nalayak nikayro…" (…This Jignesh turned out to be very useless…)
Luckily this slight giggle went unnoticed by her mother … however she realised the time at this point and went to her father to get his aashirwaad(blessings)…
"Sapna dikra Pappu ave gayo" (Sapna, Pappu is here) her mum said looking out of the window and noticing the rickshaw pulling up outside their house.
"Ok mummy, papa main jaavu chu" Sapna said taking her bag and about to leave when her mum handed her a tiffin…
"Aaa shu che mummy?" (What is this mum?)
"Taaru tiffin dikra…main dokhla ane undhyu banavyu che taaru man pasand" (Your tiffin beta… I have made dokhla and undhyu; your favourite) her mum smiled and Sapna hugged and kissed her on the cheek and ran out the house.
As Sapna got in to her mum's favourite pappu bhaiyya's rickshaw she thought to herslelf… Her mum was never going to give up was she…? At the same time her mum to herself...I have to check out Shaadi.com to get the details of Mr Thakkar's son…
GUPTA RESIDENCE
"Di… Get up!!! As it is I overslept… so couldn't even go jogging… Mum's already come twice to wake us up, if she comes once again and sees you like this… she'll lose it and she'll make us do IT again." Riddhima emphasised on IT, she knew if mentioned that, her sister would spring out of bed.
As those words reached anjie's ear, she screamed "NO WAY" she remembered how she hated doing it and leapt out of bed for the bathroom.
Riddhima laughed at the worried expressions on her Di's face, and thought to herself… Di aap dil se abhi bhi bilkul bacchi ho… and remembered how her mum used to punish them when they were small by making them cluck like chickens around their garden in front of their neighbours. She also has the video tapes to prove it, which even now she uses to blackmail them when they misbehave.
"Oh God… come out of your flashback dear riddhima…tumhe tayyar hona hai.." Riddhima said to herself while hitting her forehead, and with that she took out her yellow churidaar.
"Good morning mum and dad" They both chorused together as per ritual as they came in to the kitchen/diner.
"Aagayee tum dono… chalo abhi breakfast karlo" their mom said telling them to sit themselves.
"So are you both ready?" asked shashank in a fatherly worried manner…
Both he and Padma were extremely happy and proud of both their achievements. Now they were about to put their first step towards their goal, which would be a very rough and winding journey and he wanted them both to be prepared for better or for worse.
"Yes dad we are ready, we will take everything as it comes in our stride…" Anjali said smiling at her parents and Ridz finished off what Anji had started by adding.."And we will try our best to maintain the dignity that is associated with being a doctor and we will not let you or mum down professionally or personally"
They both smiled at each other and hugged and their mum had tears in her eyes as she saw both her daughters so grown up and they had great understanding between each other. She wiped her tears and "Yelo tum dono ka juice… tumhara orange ridz, or tumhara pomegranate anji…"
"Mum, dad we'll come by my car… aap jaiyye" Anji said as her mum and dad both kissed their foreheads and wish them the best of luck for their first day.
"Time se aa jaana… Dr Kirti ko latecomers pasand nahi hai aur unke cabin main jana wo…"
"Reception se left turn and then the second right… Ye mum we know, you have said this about 100 times already" They chimed together to annoy their mum.
"Badmaash.." She smiled as they left in their respective cars.
SIERRA TOWERS
"Aaj tum basketball khelne nahi gaye" Atul asked Armaan whilst pulling his blue sweater vest over his white shirt.
"No yaar.. I put my alarm on… but just kept snoozing it… couldn't get up" Armaan yawned as he sat down to have his bowl of cereal on the table.
Just then their home phone rang, they both smiled knowing very well who it was that was ringing…Atul clicked the speaker phone on and they heard a familiar sweet vocal saying "Hello Guddu and Guddi beta"
"MUM" they both simultaneously replied "Hum abhi bacche nahi rahe" Armaan said smiling slightly.
"Mere liye to abhi bhi tum dono bacche hi ho..chahe tum kitne bhi bade ho jao… abhi ye sab choro kaise ho tum dono?.. Nashta kiya? Kya khaya? Tum dhang se khaana to khate hona? Ya phir wohi tum log ka fast food Pizza, burger and all…"
"Arre mum hamaa…" Armaan and Atul tried to reply while counting something with their fingers but their mum continued…
"…aur woh gangu massi tum dono ka theek se khayal rakhti hai na? wo choro… tum log tayyar hona aaj tumhara internship ka pehla din hai…" Before their mum could keep endlessly asking questions upon questions, they heard a man's voice cut her off by saying "Kya tumhi unse sawaal pe sawaal punchti rahogi…yaa unhe bhi bolne ka mauka donji?"
"Hey dad" Both said "How are you? Aur ye tau hamesha se hi chalta aa raha haina dad" Atul chuckled as he said this.
"So who won the bet this time?" His dad asked eagerly.
"Well I had said 6 and Atul had said 5…so I won…" Armaan said while making round round hand gestures.
"Tum log kabhi nahi sudhroge… you were busy counting the questions that I was asking and not listening to me?" His mum said sounding sad, though they knew she was only pretending as usual… as this was a part of their ritual.
They all laughed and then their mum took in turn to talk to both of them, for them Atul was their eldest son by 10 months, and he always called them mum and dad like Armaan, since his father's death.
"Guddu beta I know you will make us both proud, and if Omi was here he would have been really extremely proud of you as well and I know he must be watching you from up there and giving you all his blessings" Mum said while getting all teary as her husband soothed her.
At the other end Atul who also had tears was being taken care by Armaan.
To lighten the mood Armaan said "you will not talk to your Guddi" pouting, he cringed as he said that word… but he knew that was the only way to cheer Atul and his mum, and he would do anything to make them happy- the most important people to him was his family.
"You make sure that you work hard and I know that you would also not to do anything wrong… we are also very proud of you" Mum said wiping away those tears and smiling as she knew that he had only mentioned Guddi to put a smile on Atul's face.
"Aur Armaan larkiyon ke peeche mat bhagna… Atul isse sambhalna" Dad said smiling to himself.
"All the best baccho aur ek dujhe ka khayal rakhna… Bye" They both said together and put the phone down.
"Bye Mum and Dad…aap bhi apna khayal rakhna" They both said and got up to leave as they saw the time.
KHAN RESIDENCE
"Rehaan kaha hai? Wo bhi aapke saath fajar parhne gaya tha na" His mum enquired while looking behind her husband to check for her son.
"Ha wo namaz parh kar jogging par wahi se chaala gaya" His dad replied as he sat down to read the Quran.
After a little while Rehan jogs in and goes to his room to shower and change…then he comes back down and sits next to his dad on the table, as his mum walks in to the diner with a bowl.. "Beta ye tumhara liye badam ka halwa… aur abhi kitchen se main badam ka doodh leke aati hu… aur ye tumhare liya paanch badam jaane se pehle kha lena" with that she walked back in to the kitchen.
"Dad ye sab badam badam kya hai… aap kya profession change kar rahe ho… from newspaper to businesss..aap mujhe pehle bata dete tau main business main jata doctor nahin banta.." Rehan asked with his cheeky monky grin raising his eyebrows at his father…
"Abe saale ye sab to tumhare liye ho raha hai…" Rehan's abbu said…and then he started imitating his wife in a high pitched squeaky voice by saying "Aaj mere bete Rehan ka internship ka pehla din hai.. tau main usse subhe subhe badam khilaugi.. taake pura din uska dimag tej rahe" He copied his wife's hand gestures while saying that.
"Haila Abbu… kya solid nakal mari hai.. main Ammi ko bulao…with that he tried to shout "AMM…"before he could finish his dad covered his son's mouth with his hand. Just then his mum walked in "Ye kya kar rahe ho uske saath" she said eyeing her husband suspiciously.
"Main… main tau kuch nahi…uske mooh pe kuch laga hua tha wohi nikaal raha tha" His dad said patting his son's face harder than necessary while signalling to his son NOT to mention anything.
"Haaa.. Ammi woh Abbu theek keh rahe hai" Rehan smiling sarcastically at his dad.
"Accha ab aap dono larna band kariye aur ye badam ka doodh peelo" she said while putting two massive lassi type glasses in front of them.
"Abbu… mujhe bachalo.." Rehan muttered to his dad.
"Main khud itne saalon se nahi bach paya tumhe kya bachaoo" He murmured back to his son.
"Aap apni ye khusr phusr band karenge" She said while eyeing them both up.
His father said sarcastically "Begum sahiba aap ne badam ke parathe nahi banaye?" Rehan who was drinking his milk, couldn't control his laughter and spat out the milk on the floor.
"Dad you are a genius…what a one-liner" He said as he high-fived his dad. Whilst his mum had a sherni look on her face, they both stopped laughing instantly and sat there with their heads down.
"Ammi mujhe daer ho rahi hai" Rehan said quickly while getting up from his seat, he whispered to his dad "Aap ki tau waat lag gayi…" His dad gave him daggers while his mum was praying and blowing at him..
"Ammi abbu AllahHafiz" He said while running out of the door to his car.
AALIYAH IN TAXI
"Mum isn't it 2am in the morning there" Aaliyah said while the taxi turned a corner.
"Beta it's your first day, how could I have not called you" her mum said while getting a bit sentimental.
"Aaawww… how cute mum" she said while getting emotional as well.
"Oh here…your sister wants to talk to you, she is eating my brain… talk to her first…" At the same time she heard her sister in the background saying "but mum you have such a tasty brain"
She hasn't changed a bit…"Stop bothering mum and what do you want?" Aaliyah said as her sister came on the phone.
"Huh, I just wanted to wish you good luck, fine I am not going to now" in a melodramatic style.
"Ok ok… sorry… go on wish me luck now" Aaliyah said very well knowing her sister's dramatic act.
"Good luck and I hope u flop in front of everyone" Her sister said snickering.
"By the way, you didn't want that blue top of yours did you?" Her sister said cautiously.
"Why are u asking me that question? What have u done now?" Aaliyah said knowing what was coming next.
"Urm…urmm… nothing… mum wants to talk to you" thrusting the phone back in to her mum's hand.
"Just ignore her, your dad wants to talk to you" Her mum said handing the phone to her husband.
"Salam dad" She said as her dad took the phone.
"W.salam, how are you my sweety? Baccha how are you finding it out there? Are you and Sameerah settled in properly, and have you visited Hafizah aunty yet?" Her dad piled her with questions, as she was the apple of her father's eye!!
"Dad…don't worry I am fine here, and I am getting used to it, and Sameerah and me have both settled in well, and I have spoken to aunty but not seen her yet" Aaliyah answered all his questions to calm his nerves.
"Baccha all the best for your first day, and I know you will be fine and we are all very proud of you, here talk to your sis and mum now" her dad said while turning the speaker phone on now.
"Good luck and have a good day and AllahHafiz" They all chorused together.
"Oh and before i forget, did you read Nafl namaz and prayed Surah Yasin" her mum enquired.
"Yes mum, how can I forget?" She said smiling "Bye".
As they all journeyed their way in to a new beginning…they were at ease knowing that no matter what future had in store for them, their parents would always be on their side to comfort them. As they took one final look at the past they thought that one only sees rightly with the mind, what is essential is invisible to the eye.
With that reflection in mind:
Sapna thought that dream is only a dream until it becomes a reality.
Aaliyah thought that luck is only for those whom destiny favours.
Ray thought that hope remains while company is true.
Atul thought that, I am going to make you proud dad, this is my destiny.
Anjali thought there is nothing greater than respect in the world.
Riddhima thought sometimes providence is the only thing that you can rely upon.
Armaan thought future is a journey with endless crossroads...
