Part 5
When the kids arrive home the parents immediately stopped their conversations and watched the door warily wondering what their kids expressions were going to be like, as that would tell them everything. The door burst open and Adi stormed in first, Prerna looked at him surprised then glanced at Anurag. "Uhm, Adi beta?" she started. "Why are you all wet?" He was about to respond when the others came in behind him and he turned and pointed at Maithilli who looked surprised. "Ask her," he said. Om stood up. "Maithilli, what have you done?" "Papa I didn't do anything!" she protested. "I'll tell you what the truth is," announced Prem. "Wait a minute," said Mukti. "Why are you going to tell them?" "Because I will tell them what really happened, unlike these two," he replied with a meaningful look. She rolled her eyes but didn't say anything else. "Anyway the reason for Adi looking like that is because…." Prem began again. "It's raining outside!" exclaimed Mukti. Everyone looked at her with a 'What' expression on their faces. "If that's true, then why are the rest of you dry?" asked Parvati with a slight amusement in her voice. Mukti tried to think of another explanation. "Well, it's because Adi came in first he didn't want to wait for the rain to stop, whereas we waited until it had stopped until we came out of the car," she hastily improvised. No one seemed to believe this but since it was the only explanation offered they accepted it.
Prerna said, "Acha, theek hai. Adi, you go change your clothes now before you get ill." He threw Maithilli a nasty look before storming upstairs. "Right I think we should go now," said Parvati. "Haan chalo," agreed Om. Maithilli sighed with relief and it seemed she had got away with what happened at the party. Parvati thanked Prerna and Anurag and said they should come one day soon. "Of course, you just tell us the date and we'll be there!" smiled Anurag. They all made for the door and left behind were Prem and Mukti. She turned to follow the others when he grabbed her hand. "What are you doing? Let go of me!" She turned to face him and saw that he looked amused. "What a rubbish explanation you came up with to cover up your sister's deeds." "Did you think I was just going to let you tell everyone the truth, especially since no one knows what your brother did this morning?" she retorted. The smile faded from his face and he pulled her closer. "Did you really think that's what I was going to do?" "I..uh" she couldn't think of anything to say. All she could think was that Prem was very close to her, so close she could hear his heart beating. "Mukti," called Parvati from outside. They both jumped. "I have to go," she said and he let go of her.
A few days later
Mukti and Prem had been trying to avoid each over the past few days and it had been working until Prem decided he'd had enough and wanted to talk to her or annoy her. Mukti was in the library looking for a book (what else?!) and as she reached out for a book someone put their hand on hers also trying to reach the same book. She felt a bolt of electricity run through her and looked up and saw, of course, Prem. "Tum!" she exclaimed. He put a finger to his lips and said, "Shh, we're in a library you know!" "Yes I do!" she retorted. He smiled and said, "Don't bother asking me what I'm doing here since we've had that argument before." "Whatever," she replied. "The point is I saw this book first so I am going to read it." "I don't think so, I saw it first," Prem argued. They both continue to tug the book towards each other. "You're so immature," hissed Mukti. He raised his eyebrows and said, "What about you?" "Just let go!" Eventually she managed to pull it out of his grasp and stumbled slightly backwards, he was about to take hold of her when Arjun appeared and caught her. "Hey Mukti. Are you ok? I've been looking for you." She straightened up and smiled, "Hi, I'm fine thanks to you." He noticed Prem stood glowering and cleared his throat. "Oh, well you seem busy, I'll talk to you later." "No it's ok. I'm not busy. Come on." They both turned to leave but something made her turn back to look at Prem but she was surprised to see that he wasn't looking and had found someone to flirt with! Mukti, you're crazy, she thought to herself and she carried on walking. After she had left Prem wondered what was happening to him and why Mukti kept spending so much time with Arjun. Why do I care so much? he thought to himself.
Adi was by the lockers trying to get Priya to forgive him for his outburst at the party. "Come on, Priya. I said I'm sorry." "Sorry is not good enough. You completely humiliated me all because of something Maithilli did." She slammed her locker closed and stormed off again leaving him frustrated. Someone tapped him on his shoulder and he turned to find Maithilli stood there. "Hi Adi!" she said smiling wickedly. "Oh, what's wrong? Doesn't Priya want to forgive you? Tut tut." Adi felt an unbelievable anger and grabbing Maithilli by her shoulders he pushed her against the lockers. His face was very close to hers and she struggled to push him away. "Let go of me Adi! You're hurting me!" she cried. "You know what Maithilli your sister may have saved you from your parents last week but no-one will be able to save you from me!" he exclaimed. "So why don't you just stay out of my business if you know what's best for you." He released her and walked away from her leaving her crying and wondering what he was going to do to her. Later that day she was back to her usual bubbly self and decided she would be able to cope with anything Adi would do. She decided to speak to Priya and found her in the canteen. She approached her tentatively, "Hi, Priya." Priya looked her up and down and said, "What do you want?" "Uh, look I know you probably don't want to talk to me but I think you should forgive Adi," Maithilli said. "Oh really, and you think that I'm going to listen to you?" she laughed in her face. "Listen Priya, I don't have to do this but I am. He's really sorry for what he did." Priya groaned in frustration. "All right. If it means you are going to leave me alone, I will forgive him. Ok? Now just go." Maithilli was relieved, "Thanks Priya." She turned to leave and saw Adi stood in the doorway of the cafeteria. What is she doing talking to Priya, he wondered. As she passed him he muttered, "What have you said?" Maithilli shrugged her shoulders and smiled at the worried look on his face. "You'll see." He clenched his fists and walked over to Priya. "Listen don't believe anything she says…." "Adi, relax. It's ok, I forgive you." He stared at her surprised. "You do?" "Yes, just don't do that ever again." Did Maithilli convince Priya to forgive me? Why would she do that? She must have some ulterior motive, he decided.
