Ironic
Satyen saw his son walking off ignoring him.
“He looks real happy” Satyen chuckled shaking his head
“Stop it” Smrita pretended to be cool
“He probably saw my reports and is real happy” Satyen laughed again
“SATYAAA” Smrita hugged him affectedly
“Are u OK?” he hugged her warmly
“Hmm… I think we need to get away” Smrita cooed
“Rajiv Syal keh raha hai its better for me to be here when the collision guy’s employer does the legal drama”
“Oh please there is nothing Power Engineers cannot do” Smrita believed in absolute power
“Hmm.. laws need to be followed” Satyen sighed as they both sat in the upstairs balcony looking out at the lawn
“I don’t agree” she argued
She hoped to run away
“Does he like the room renovation?”
“I am sure… yes he does, yes he does” she lied
“Tumne poochha nahi” he called her bluff
“You know… I am so busy with the Europe prep”
“Kyon ja rahe ho yaar aap” “yahi raho” he said fondly
His arm around her shoulder he gently caressed her shoulder with his finger tips
“Do you miss being back in college?”
“No… I have you with me, bewaqoof hoga jo us din ko miss karega”
“HEYYYY” smriti was offended
He laughed heartily
“I miss when we could be just us”
Smrita carefully set the stage of absolving herself of any responsibility in the Viveka humiliation matter
“I hated your Dad, he refused to let me see you. I am glad I married you”
Satyen spoke with vengeance
“U are so mean” Smrita cooed
“I mean face it man, your daughter is going to live her life with the guy she chose” Satyen expressed long forgotten anger
“Well I am glad you helped me run away” she hugged him smugly
“The guys u know… in our circle who cheat… and the women too” “I don’t get it Smri”
“I don’t either” she said smugly, nearing 60 she had a fantastic relationship, emotional and every other “al”. She loved it she wanted it she needed it
But was not charitable enough to let her own son have the same.
They had built a marriage of trust, a commitment to putting their partner’s needs first
Ironically, Smrita could not bear to see her son Raanav do the same
How could he be taking a “greasy, unkempt” (in her opinion) middle class girl to bed?
At this age Smrita spent hours in chemical peels and botox and facials and spas
Millions a year
Viveka had youth on her side. But soon her son was going to tire of her
Hope he tires of her…
“I mean why get married” Satyen interrupted her wandering hopeful thoughts
“Hmm” Smrita remembered her best friend Kumud Arora… and a few others she had who had “open marriages”
“Its not always the woman’s fault Satya”
“Its BOTH… and I wont have it”
She sighed audibly
Her man will never leave her
One look at her, and even after almost 4 decades of marriage he SWOONED
“Nobody goes to Jaipur anymore, haveli de dete hain kisi ko yaar”
“No way!” she pulled away sitting up
“No I wont let you, its your legacy, you have royal lineage” she was outraged
“Arey yaar pata nahi how many generations ago, as much as royalty mean power and prestige it also means discrimination and oppression” Satyen said sadly
“U shud stop hanging with that girl” Smrita blurted without realizing she shouldn’t be voicing words she used in HER MIND
“Which girl”
“U know the little girl… Viveka Mathur” Smrita spun it to mean “baby”
Satyen laughed
He was not looking at her
They were on the swing, his eyes were closed and he was enjoying himself
The swamp coolers on the side blowing moist cool air to liven up the already muggy March evening
Smrita checked his face to make sure he wasn’t looking and wiped imaginary sweat off her brow
“I don’t think I will ever be Viveka Mathur in this lifetime” he sighed
Just the sound of that line made her even more angry
She had just gotten told off by Viveka’s husband
Coldly politely bluntly…
She never wanted to see the girl again
“Hmm” she sighed
“Socho aap, she is affluent, she could have chosen any career, I doubt very many 30 year olds are as well read and as educated as her”
“India mein itne saare PhDs hain she is not even a Ph D right?” Smrita let it out “YET SO SMART” she mumbled with difficulty
Satyen was too deep in thought to get the sting of that insult or the grudging compliment
“I hope she enrolls fast, she fully deserves to have the label”
“I offered, Kharagpur mein hamare Aurangabad Plant Director ki aunt Advisory board mein hain I had a chat with the Plant Director”
“U hate nepotism and you are trying to make it happen?” Smrita mocked Satyen gently
“waise to both boys work in the company” he laughed still eyes closed
“What did the Plant Director say?”
“All IITs are super ethical”
“Yeah until a politician intervenes” Smrita smiled
Satyen opened his eyes and gasped
“Are u actually encouraging me to use my political connection to make something happen for VIVEKA?”
“Umm.. I like her… um… she is my… u know she lives here” (Smrita just could NOT come up with MY DIL or MY SON LOVES HER)
“I will talk to her”
She leaned back and relaxed
“Kamal Shrivastav jee ka invite aaya hai they are doing something for Varsha”
“No Satya… they do SOMETHING every month” she moaned like a baby
“Looks like it” he laughed chuckling… agreeing
