He knocked on the door all night.
"Please Mauli, please...please let me in. He begged. Everyone came and begged me. I sat in a corner and cried. That night, I had nightmares again. I was holding a newborn baby in my arms. I entered the house with it and Kunal threw me out. Mishti and Pari are with him. I begged him to not leave me and reject me. I could see the shadow of a woman next to Kunal, another woman. The baby cried in my arms and I couldn't soothe it. I woke up screaming.
Kunal broke down the door and entered the room. He hugged me. "Yes, yes...I'm here...I didn't leave. I love you. He said. This was the worst nightmare in years. I cried. My heart pounded. He wiped my tears and held me. I did feel comforted by his warmth but as soon as I calmed down, I pushed him away.
I called the hospital and said I wouldn't be able to come for the next day or two. I needed time to pull myself together. At breakfast, Kunal barely ate. I took the kids to school and picked them up myself. I spent a lot of time with them the next couple of days.
"Mumma, is Buddy ok?Pari asked.
"Why, Pari? You look worried. I said. Buddy looks sad. Did you and buddy have a fight? He looks like Mishti when she's sad. I try not to fight with Mishti so she wont be sad.
"Buddy is fine, princess. Everything is fine. I reassured her.
Kunal came home and slept. He didn't eat dinner. The next morning, he left without breakfast. As the days passed, I returned to work. He still insisted on dropping me and picking me up. I refused it. As the fog in my head began to clear, I noticed that Kunal looked paler. It worried me.
One night, I saw him with his head in Didas lap. "Kunalputtar, you have a fever. Radhika, do something.
"Beeji, what am I supposed to do if hes not eating? How can you take medicines on an empty stomach? she asked.
"I am fine, Maa. He said.
"You have a 102 temperature, Kunal. You haven't eaten a proper meal in days. Tell me something, aren't you the same Kunal who has 2 children? One is 6 and the other is 4. You're also the same Kunal who is a doctor? Am I right or had old age finally caught up to me? she asked.
"I don't know. He replied. She slapped him on his arm. The kids came and sat on his lap. I left and went back to my room.
I came out late at night. Maa was folding clothes.
"Did he eat? I asked her.
"No, puttar...he's being a stubborn idiot. I made the girls feed give him some milk. He drank that to satisfy the kids. But it isn't enough. I just checked on him and he still has a fever. As a matter of fact, let me check again. She said. She left. She didn't ask me to check on him. She didn't scold me for neglecting her son, and my husband. I listened by the door when she went to him.
"You don't want roti, you don't want fruits what do you want then? she asked.
There was silence. "Mauli, right? You want Mauli. Just say it, puttar...sulking like a baby isn't going to get rid of this 102.5 degree temperature. Have mercy on your poor mother. You're a father yourself.
"Maa, I'm sorry. The food isn't going down my throat. He said. Maa left. She looked worried. I couldn't take it anymore. I went to make him something to eat. A sandwich, soup, anything he would eat. I went into the guestroom. He was sleeping. I put the tray on the table next to the bed. I touched his forehead. He woke up and opened his eyes. He had an extremely high temperature.
"Get up... I told him. He seemed surprised to see me. He slowly sat up.
"How's your throat? Open your mouth... I said. I looked at his throat. No wonder he couldn't it. It looked terrible.
"Oh God. Do you have a headache too? I asked. He nodded. He was very sick. I felt bad for treating him with ignorance while he was feeling so bad. "You have to eat, Kunal...because you MUST take medicines. Your fever has to go down. I told him.
We made eye contact. "Mauli, I'm sorry... He said.
"Stop it now. Just eat first... I said. I sat beside him and made him eat. "I can do it. He said.
"Then do it. Why have you been skipping meals then? I asked. He was sad and in a sulky mood.
"I had no appetite. He said.
He ate slowly. I got up to give Promila a list of medicines to buy. Kunal grabbed my hand.
"Where are you going? He asked.
"Kunal, we're out of the necessary medicines. I have to send someone to get those. I said.
"Ok, but just...stay here... He said. Even his hand was burning hot. "I will be back. I told him. He watched me leaving. I gave Promila the list of medicines and she went to buy them. I got a thermometer and checked his fever again. It wasn't going below 102.5. I placed a wet towel on forehead.
He was clutching hard on my other hand. The girls came in.
"Girls, right now I have to take care of your father. Come back in a while, ok? Both kept trying to look at Kunal.
"Guys, I'm fine. He told them. He smiled. Pari looked scared.
"Buddy... she said, with a long face.
"I'm alright, Princess. Kunal promised her. Mumma took the kids away.
"Kunal, you're insane, you know that? I said.
Promila got the medicines. "You need to take these right now. I instructed. He took them immediately.
"Kunal, come back to our room. I told him. He looked at me. "Seriously? He asked.
"Yes. I am not coming into the guestroom over and over to keep an eye on you. It's nighttime. I need you beside me so I can make sure that fever goes down. I said. He smiled. He was definitely happy. We went back to our room. I got him into bed though he was suddenly ready to stay up and chit chat.
"No, Kunal...rest. I have to put the kids to sleep. I said.
"Send them in here. He said.
"No. They won't let you sleep. I said. He didn't argue. I went to put the kids to bed, and reassure them that their father was going to be just fine as soon as he stopped being a big baby himself.
When I came back, Kunal was up and apparently waiting for me.
"What are you doing out of bed, Kunal?
"I'm bored. I need to move around. He said.
"Right...and you're disregarding your doctor's orders. I said. He smiled.
"Not funny at all, Kunal. You're a grown up acting like Mishti. Even Mumma couldn't get you to eat. That's another level of sulking. I said.
"So, you're talking to me now, right? He asked.
"I need to communicate with my patient, right? I asked. He nodded.
"Don't expect much more than this. I told him. He came closer to me and held me by the shoulders.
"Mauli yaar, please... He hugged me. "I'm nothing without you. He said. His voice sounded so weak. It tugged at my heart. I held him.
"You seriously need some rest. I told him.
"Please yaar... He pleaded.
"Please what? Kunal, I'll be right here, right next to you. Just please do yourself and me a favor and get yourself into bed and sleep. You look like you're going to faint any second. You neglected your health for a week and it has caught up. I said. I was very firm with him.
He did was I told him to do. I also got into bed. I patted him on the head. "Sleep... I said. He fell asleep very quickly and so did I. His fever finally broke the next morning.
