Next morning as he got ready to leave Kunal and Naina were there to see him off. But Niharika wasn't.

Naina: let her be. If she doesn't care about you, you shouldn't either.

Raj: Naina Stop. I am going to speak to Ma. I can't leave without taking her blessings.

Raj went to niharikas room where she was sitting seeing some photographs. As Raj went closer he noticed that the photo in her hand was from the first Mother's Day he had spent with her. He was 3 years old and had shyly given her a handmade card and she had cried tears of joy.

Niharika: This was the first time you accepted me as a mother. We got you home when you were 3 and were prepared for the challenges of making you feel at home. But it was so much harder. You were a very well behaved child, but so emotionally distant

Raj: I was scared you wouldn't love me. Not in the long term.

Niharika: Did you feel like we didn't love you enough? As much as abhimanyu?

Raj (emotional): why are you saying that?

Niharika: because I have always wondered why you treated abhi as your step brother. Arresting him. Writing a report against him. Paving the way for his ultimate death.

And I came to the conclusion that you treated abhi unfairly because you didn't feel loved by us?

Raj (choking) ma please don't say that! Abhi was more than a brother to me! and I have never doubted your love.

Niharika: Raj please go. Take care. But let's not pretend that things are like they used to be.

That's what Naina wants me to do! She came and lectured me last night for the way I have been treating you.

Raj: She shouldn't have done that! I'll ask her to apologize

Niharika: no. That's what I love about her. Her fierce sense of righteousness and loyalty.

I shudder to think how she'll react when she realizes her best friend; now husband was responsible for the death of her Abhi.

Raj: Ma...

Niharika: Raj leave! Take care of yourself and I have one request from you. We clearly failed you as adoptive parents which is why abhi wasn't a brother to you. But don't fail Naina or Abhis baby. Even if you resent us or Abhi.

Niharika walked away leaving a heartbroken Raj.

Naina walked in and gave him a side hug!

Naina: remember two calls every day.

Raj: yes ma'am. More if you want.

Naina: Ouch! The baby kicked. She likes your idea. You know I think she recognizes your voice. Wouldn't surprise me. I remember in the weeks after Abhis death you spent hours talking to me and her even though I wouldn't say a word.

I really think we are alive and doing well because of your incessant efforts.

Raj: Shh that Times gone! And everything will continue getting better. Take care of yourself. And my jaan.

Raj left. In the next few weeks, Naina realized just how much she missed him. She looked forward to the two calls he made in the morning and night.

Then suddenly one day he didn't call at night. She was worried sick.

Niharika: Beta it's nothing. He must be busy.

Naina: no ma. He never fails to call.

Kunal: Beta let's try his number again.

Kunal called and this time shalini picked up.

Shalini: this is shalini. I am the doctor at KMA. Captain Shekhawat had a bad reaction to a drink used in one of the ongoing appraisal tests

Naina: Is he ok? Where is he? I want to talk to him

Shalini: you must be Naina. He's much better now. He asked me to apologize to you for not calling! He's just sleeping right now.

As Naina kept the phone down she turned to Kunal and Niharika

Naina: I want to go to KMA.

Niharika: don't be crazy. It's a 5 hour drive and you are more than 7 months pregnant. And Kunal and I have to leave for London to attend Kunals uncles funeral.

Naina: you know that Ramesh kaka is a very careful driver. And you weren't happy about me being alone. I'll stay in kma for the next two weeks till you get back

Kunal: fine Beta. But you have to take good care of yourself. Raj isn't well so he won't be able to look after you...

Naina: I will! Thanks so much dad

Raj got up to the most pleasant surprise. Naina had fallen asleep sitting on the bed next to him.

Raj; crazy girl! Why did you have to come all the way?! He got up and adjusted her sleeping positing making sure had enough pillows to support her belly and back.

Despite his weakness he went to the kitchen to make breakfast for her.

Naina woke up to see Raj walking in with a tray of breakfast.

Naina: Raj I am supposed to take care of you! Not the other way round!!!!

Raj: I am fine. And all the weakness went away seeing you here. By the way you shouldn't be here.

Naina: well I am and will be here for the the next two weeks till mom and dad come back from London. So you can deal with all my crazy mood swings and all the craziness this naughty baby creates.

She is truly Abhis baby! So naughty. See she's kicking me like a football.

Raj placed his hands gently on the belly.

Raj: Beta I am excited to see you too! But let's let mama have her breakfast in peace.

Naina: you are amazing Raj! She immediately responds to your voice. Though not related by blood you have an amazing connection!

Raj: Naina I know I can never take Abhis place. But I'll try and be as good a father as abhi would have been

Naina suddenly turned white.

Naina: don't try and be like Abhi.

Raj: What do you mean Naina?

Naina: The last time I met abhi we had a massive fight. I had just found out that I was 3 weeks pregnant. It was an unplanned pregnancy. My surprise had immediately turned to euphoria.

But Abhis reaction was different. He was sullen and angry and even implied that I should have been more careful.

Raj: He was caught off guard. And he never reacts well to surprises!

Naina: you don't need to defend him! I know that.

But his reaction didn't change over the whole week we spent together.

And then...

Naina began crying and Raj calmed her down.

Naina: on the last day he said before leaving "we should think practically and not emotionally about this pregnancy and be open to all options

Naina broke down crying. Raj was shocked and immediately hugged her. When she had calmed down he said.

Raj: Naina don't draw conclusions...

Naina: Raj STOP DEFNDING HIM!!!

You know as well as I do that he wants suggesting an abortion

He didn't want this baby and I did! Sometimes I wonder if our marriage would have survived...

Raj: Don't do that. He's not with us to defend himself...

Naina: I know and since his death I buried this entire incident. I only kept the good memories around. The man I fell in love with when I was 21! Who proposed to me within 6 weeks of dating! Our fairytale wedding. The honeymoon where he rented an entire island. All the passionate weekends we spent together when he came to Delhi from his postings.

She stopped talking

Her mind drifted to the challenges in their relationship. Abhi was 6 years older and she was only 22 when she had married him. They had only been married for 8 months before he died. She thought wryly that it was classic of him to have left her a pregnant widow.

She remembers the night their baby was conceived. She had just finished giving her bar exam and had been exhausted. The last month had been tough on their marriage. She was busy with her exam and abhi was annoyed that she had no time for him. He never understood why she insisted on giving the bar and becoming a lawyer.

After the exam she had fallen asleep exhausted from all the work. She woke up suddenly when she felt warm breath on her neck and a hand massaging her breasts. She was shocked and turned to find abhi lying next to her kissing her neck and with his hands under her shirt. She turned to him.

Abhi (huskily) good you are awake.
