THEY WERE ONE
The Seven sages appeared outside the majestic palace of the King of the Himalayas, smiling joyously, as they carried the proposal that had been drafted by their father, Lord Brahma, holding the auspicious news of Lord Shiva Himself requesting for Girija Parvati's hand.
"Pranaam!
The humble voice of Maharaja Himavan made the Seven sages, and the Rishipatnis, Devi Arundhati, the wife of Sage Vasishtha, and Devi Anasuya, the wife of Sage Atri, smile and bless him wholeheartedly.
"Please do grace my humble abode with your magnificent presence, said the King, his head bowed down in reverence and respect.
The Seven sages smiled, and walked in, along with Devi Anasuya, joyous about the reason they had come.
The Seven sages smiled and blessed the King and Queen of the Mountains, seeing their humility and their utmost respect for them, and for the great God Shankara.
"Maharaja, this is the wedding proposal for Devi Parvati, hand written by Brahma Deva Himself, said Maharishi Vasishtha, handing the King a scroll.
Maharaja Himavan slowly opened the scroll, smiling softly at what was written inside, and the way it was.
"Bhagwan Shiva has requested Devi Parvati's hand, with love and affection. He asked us to reassure you that He will take care of her every need, and be ever affectionate to her, said Devi Anasuya.
"That is all parents need, said Menavati, tears flowing in her eyes, as she heard the words that Lord Shiva Himself had told the Seven Sages and Mata Anasuya. All she had wanted was for her daughter to be loved, and Lord Shiva had promised to do that forever! That is all she needed.
"Maharani, we came with so many examples to tell you why you must let Devi Parvati marry Bhagwan Shiva, said Maharishi Atri.
"Please do tell us all those legends and tales. But this is just a mother-in-law wanting to hear more about her son-in-law. I have already accepted Lord Shiva as my son-in-law, said Menavati.
Parvati, who was about to walk into the room, heard this, and felt tears form in her eyes. She knew her mother had had reservations, and she had hoped that her mother would whole-heartedly submit to this. And it had happened. Her Lord's words were enough!
She closed her eyes, lost in her love for Him, and in His for her, her dream world taking her to Kailash, to where He was seated.
"Swami!
Shiva opened His eyes, and smiled lovingly, causing goose bumps to appear all over Parvati's body. His love for her made her blush red, and caused shyness to be her language. She smiled, as she saw Him stand up. Shyly, she walked back, as He approached her, the red becoming more prominent on her beautiful face.
"Uma, He said softly. "Look at me
Unable to disobey His gentle command, she looked into His eyes, and gasped. His eyes were red, as He danced with skulls around His neck, and ash covered all over His body, tiger skin wrapped around his lower half of the body, the upper half bare. She felt herself become a woman wearing similar clothes, almost black in colour, dancing with Him. They were one, and they were equal!
Parvati jerked when she heard the Sages and the royal priest discuss when to fix her wedding.
She mentally prayed to her Bhrata, asking Him how He came up with so many nuances in Creation, that it made so many things different. His games never failed to amaze her, and she always learnt a whole lot every time. Which means, she was always learning. After all, life by itself was his game of illusion, and His plans is what will unfold in the future!
Parvati smiled joyously, as her Sakhis took her to the room where her haldi ceremony was to be held. She knew that the Haldi from Kailash had been delivered by her Bhrata Himself. She smiled at her mother, as she was made to sit on the special seat for her.
The haldi ceremony proceeded with the mother and grandmother of the bride anointing her with the sacred turmeric. Before her Sakhis could follow, four Divine women walked into the chambers.
"Mothers!, said Devi Arundhati, folding her hands in prayer, welcoming Shridevi, Bhudevi, Niladevi and Devi Saraswati. Parvati smiled at her counterparts, mentally thanking the Tridevon for sending two thirds of the Tridevi.
"Can we join the ceremony?, asked Saraswati, a soft smile upon her beautiful face.
"Always Mother. We are blessed that you are here, said Queen Menavati.
"We are blessed to be a part of the Haldi ceremony of Bhagwan Shankara's Shakti, said Niladevi, smiling at Saraswati, asking her to do the honours.
The five women smiled at each other, as the four Goddesses took turns in anointing the other Goddess with the ritual turmeric.
"The groom's procession is here!
Parvati looked up at the mirror, a blissful smile spread on her face. She had been decked and decorated by the three Lakshmis and Saraswati, and looked ethereal in the rich red, auspicious marks all over her. Shining like Shakti, she muttered to herself, "My Shiva is here!
Grinning, she took the garland in her hands, knowing she will be called soon for the garland exchange.
(There is a story of Queen Menavati fainting on seeing Lord Shiva with skulls and tiger skin, covered in ash. I, however, am not writing that. I am choosing to proceed with the wedding smoothly, as there is a version of that happening as well!)
GAURI KALYANAM
Maharani Menavati, smiling joyously at the beautiful Lord Shankara, and thanking all the Gods and Goddesses in her heart, for getting Lord Shiva as her son-in-law, did the Niranjana (Aarti) ceremony, the customary welcome for the groom.
She smiled, and watched women gush over the beauty of Lord Shiva. Parvati's description of the Lord came to her mind.
"Maa, my Shiva is beautiful, said Parvati. "He is well-proportioned and beautifully limbed. His skin is the colour of the Champaka, and His eyes are the shape of the Lotus. His face has a sharp nose, well-placed cheekbones and a perfect jawline. His lips are full and are as red as a Bimba fruit. His face has the radiance of thousand moons, and He is the brightest of All. He exudes a power of Godliness, Love, Compassion and Truth
Menavati realised, at that moment, that her daughter was fortunate to have gotten Shiva as her husband.
Shiva waited at the entrance, as Parvati was slowly being brought out for worshipping Goddess Mahalakshmi, the family Goddess. His eyes eagerly looked at the entrance of the palace, to catch a glimpse of His bride. Hearing the tinkling sound of anklets, He looked and almost gasped.
Parvati, dressed in rich red, was bedecked with jewels. Yet, her natural radiance outmatched the radiance of the jewels. She shyly looked at Shiva, her eyes not leaving His, even as she was taken towards the temple. She could feel her union with Him nearing, as Shiva felt the pangs of separation slowly subside. He will reunite with His Shakti that day, and nothing pleased Him more.
He continued to watch her, till she disappeared into the temple of Mahalakshmi, after which He walked to the chambers with Vishnu and Brahma, to wait for the rituals to begin.
Parvati blushed as her maids dressed her in the new clothes that had come from Lord Shiva, and bedecked with jewels He had chosen for her. The very thought of Him having chosen them personally for her added a charm to it, something that nothing else could have done. Ready and decked, she stood up, a radiant smile lighting her face. With every second, she grew more eager.
"Parvati, come. The time for the auspicious rites, and for your wedding has come
Ganga's voice floated across the chambers. Parvati rejoiced, and turned happily, almost running to the entrance, her eagerness evident.
Shiva followed Maharaja Himavan calmly, though He was incredibly excited for the marriage. Narayana's constant teasing by His side and in His head, did not help.
"Even today?, asked Shiva, shaking His head.
"Always Mahadeva, said Vishnu, innocent smile on His face.
Shiva shook His head in fond exasperation, and entered the ceremony mandap, smiling happily. His reunion with His Sati, now in the form of Parvati had come!
Shiva smiled with pure Love, as He watched Parvati walk towards Him with a garland in her hand. His eyes met hers, and He could feel her love for Him wrapping around Him.
Parvati walked up to Shiva, and blushed. Urged by her mother, she gently placed the thick garland of flowers on His strong neck, and looked down at His feet. She blushed more when she felt a garland being placed on her neck by her Lord.
The Divine couple smiled at each other, and took the seat at the mandap, in front of the fire.
The preceptor of the Himalayan Kingdom, and the priest who was conducting the wedding, Garga Muni, took handful of rice, giving it to Parvati and asking her to shower Shiva with it. A grinning Parvati followed the instructions given to her. Lord Shiva repeated the same for Parvati, both of them beaming with love and joy, causing a love fervour to break out in the world.
The world celebrated, as the Mangalasutra adorned Parvati's neck, and Shiva and His Shakti, Parvati and her Shiva, took the Seven rounds around the fire, both making promises of Love and Eternity, of companionship and always being there for the other.
MahaVishnu smiled, as He watched the two of them take the last round around the ritual fire. This union will lead to the birth of the Six-faced Warrior God, as well as the Elephant-faced God, both bringing joy to the world. However, that was the next phase of events in this world. For now, the joy of the wedding shall remain, till it was time for Tarakasura's destruction.
Foreseeing the future, Vishnu smiled. The events to come would teach many lessons. He looked at the two young girls standing on either side of Shri and Nila, and smiled softly. They were eternally young, but there would come a time when things change!
Diverting His attention to the wedding, He wished Shiva and Parvati with a gentle smile, conveying more words than anyone else could.
And thus, the story ends. With Shiva and Parvati's wedding, I have ended this story. This book's journey is over. However, I will be writing a sequel some time. It won't be too soon, as I have other books to write and finish. But it will come when the time is right and I am ready to write them.
