Chapter 221- Empathetic Ear

Mahantji, Aravind Setia, Praveen Samrat, Rupinder Singh everyone walked towards the Varma's house. It was Durgasthami and as a practice Varma's had kept the Jagratha. Mahantji remembered the Jagratha one year back where all his plans had gone awry. From that date he has not able to get back on the Varma's. He has lost couple of alleys. But he knew one thing. He will not allow these people to get away. But at this point he was not sure what to do. Even after thinking so much, multiple round of consultation they were not able to come up with anything on what Ankush would have meant when he asked them all to come for this Jagratha.

As he reached the venue he saw Dinakarji being received with honors by Tilak and Renu. This year the Varma's had made it public that their Jagratha will be conducted by Dinakarji. His brother was making using of the oppourtunity like anything. Sudhir and Vindhya invited everyone inside. As Mahantji looked he saw Sreedhar, Suman , Poorni and Vaishu lighting the lamps in the Jagratha Mandap. They were all talking and laughing. Seeing them something came to his mind suddenly. Then a crooked smile spread on his lips.

" Maheswari Varma you are very intelligent. I should have known your intention. But now I have known it Maheswari Varma. There will be one day you will have to bring it out in the open. I will be waiting for that day Maheswari Varma. Let me see how you will save your son, let alone the reputation of the family" .

" What are you laughing at" asked Setia.

" Setia even if you lose election I have the power with me to end this Varma boy once and for all " told Mahantji.

" So you are sure I will lose election. Can you please stop going after the Varma boy and see what my son is upto" told Setia and Mahantji looked at Setia angrily. But it was not the time of argument.

They saw Ankush had come with family, also the district collector Pooja was there with family. To their surprise Somalatha Devi came with some of her disciples. Somalatha devi rarely went outside her ashram and very rarely she participated in mass programmes during festivals. Now Aravind Setia, Praveen Samrat and Mahantji were feeling a bit nervous.

Soon Jagratha started. The Bhajans, poojas , aartis and all everyone did. As the night progressed more devotees joined in and by the time it ended there were almost five hundred six hundred people in the mandap. Now it was time to distribute Prasad.

Maheswari got up and faced the audience " I am so happy to have so many of you as your guests for this Jagratha. I know all of you are eagerly waiting to receive Mata Rani's Prasad. But before we proceed to Prasad distribution I want to make an important announcement" saying she looked at the crowd. Now all the attention was on Maheswari and what she was going to tell.

" Last year everyone know what had happened for Jagratha. My bahu Suman was badly insulted publicly for doing a noble deed. My son Sreedhar's decision to protect her started a chain of events in which a lot of things like Mahima Das rape case came out. Dignity of widow campaign happened and such progressive things happnened. My sons felt the momentum was right to take such noble intentions forward. We discussed this with many like minded community members and have decided to have a committee with four men and four women who will lend an empathetic ear to people seeking justice. Now what is the purpose of this committee, how this committee will work and who are the members all this Sreedhar will tell you" told Maheswari asking Sreedhar to come forward.

" We do have committee for the community" got up Mahantji.

" Diwakar allow Sreedhar to explain the purpose of the committee" told Dinakar and Mahantji looked angrily at his elder brother and sat down

" Namasthe everyone. Please understand that we have not formed these committees to discuss traditional issues and give some barbaric punishments for those who doesn't follow the out dated traditions. This committee is formed as a medium between common people in our society and law of the land. Most of the out dated customs are practiced because of fear. The misconceptions of male superiority, female inferiority, the barbaric practice of female feticide, dowry system, rape, bride burning, honor killing many such things happen because people do not have the right knowledge. Many times people do not stand up for what is right or doesn't even fight for their right because they don't know whether help will be available for them.

So this committee will give an emphatic ear to your problems. They will act as a bridge between you and the law enforcing agencies supporting you in getting right legal help, counselling and other support mechanisms so that you need not bow down to unjust demands kept on you. Members of this committee will also conduct planned camps for vaccination, family planning, education on laws that gives protection to women, gender awareness classes and many such things. Our District collector Poojaji has lend all her support for this cause. Also our candidate from AIKP party Ankushji had told he will take steps to curb the parallel law system if he comes to power and will lend all support to this new committee. I am happy to tell you that on this very auspicious day of Durgasthami we are keeping a progressive step towards a new society.

Now who are the members of this committee. Well among ladies we have Meenakshi Rathod, we all know she is the pediatric doctor in our government hospital. Then we have Suchitra Setia, who herself is a survivor of domestic violence and a victim of gender bias, Somalatha Devi who knows in and out of spirituality, religion and traditions and my niece Poornima who you all know has successfully run the Dignity for widow campaign. Ladies if you have any issue you can approach any of these ladies. They will listen to you. Don't be afraid. Secrecy will be maintained and support will be provided. Unless you speak about the issues, we cannot solve it.

Now in a society it is not just women who are having problems. My brothers' experience has taught me law abiding men are equally vulnerable. So we have got a forum for men also to express their distress so that it can be addressed. We have Dinakarji who as you all know is a master in all the vedic, tantric knowledge. Then we have Amit Rathore who is a lawyer, my own brother Sudhir Varma who you all very well know to be a very noble person and not the least representative of young brigade Vaishnav Samrat.

All the members stood up and everyone in the gathering gave a big round of applause for such a big social initiative. As the Varma family distributed Prasad many people told this is a very good first step towards a progressive and just society. Ankush also got accolades from people for supporting the cause, also they congratulated him on walking the path of social transformation by marrying Suchitra and adopting Satya as the news spread about his wife and child.

Once it was done Ankush and Aravind Setia came face to face. Ankush looked at his father with confidence and Aravind Setia knew his son had played the game very well. He knew the idea of committee, its representative and the timing of its unveiling was his son's master plan. The Varma's had just executed it.
