Chapter 6: First Steps

It was late in the evening by the time Arnav drove Khushi back to the hospital.

As Arnav parked the car Khushi suddenly caught his arm stopping his movements.

Khushi took a breath to calm herself and proceeded "Arnav I understand what you are trying to do. But I have to tell you that Ajay too has certain pictures with me. We have been going out for the last year and I guess he has taken pictures of us together. He can still do damage with those don't you think?"

Arnav who was lost when Khushi caught his hand brought himself back to reality. He replied, "I am not a newbie Khushi. Strategizing is in my blood. Be it business or this. I am good. As far as the pictures you are worried about with Ajay, then put your mind at ease. I was named in the World's most influential people in Forbes magazine. I can get things done. My cousin NK is helping me out in this one. He has already remotely erased Ajay's cellphone and also implanted viruses on his home computer so that any photo he tries to open is automatically erased. I do not know the complete details but you do not need to worry about any photos in his possession. I however respect your privacy so all I can do is advice you to do the same and remove those photos. I can control the media if they get just a couple of pictures. I won't be able to help if a couple hundred leak."

Khushi continued as she felt a need to defend herself "There won't be a hundred pictures. Dad was very strict with regards to keeping privacy. So I didn't let Ajay take a lot of our pictures together."

Arnav interrupted her "It doesn't matter to me Khushi. I just want to control this mess as soon as possible."

The next day Khushi was on her way to the hospital to relieve her mother. Garima had been at the hospital all night and Khushi knew that her mom would need some rest. She tried talking to her father behaving as though everything was all fine with her.

Shashi looked at his daughter with pride. She had lost so much yesterday and Shashi knew what Khushi was trying to do. She always acted strong when she faced problems in her life. But he also knew that she was hiding her pain away. He didn't want her nature to change. Yes he sometimes felt that he had spoilt her with too much love and freedom but he knew that on the inside she was his little princess. She was delicate but never showed it to anybody.

Shashi knew what he had to do. He knew that it will take a lot of time for his daughter to love Arnav like a wife, but he wanted her to trust him. Even if it is as a friend. He wanted her to leave all her worries in Sheesh Mahal when she marries Arnav and leaves.

Shashi cleared his throat to grab Khushi's attention. When he had, he motioned her to come and sit close to him.

He spoke from his heart "Khushi I am really sorry that you had to go through all this. I know you trusted the wrong man but I don't want you to take all this emotional baggage with you to your new home. Difficult as it may be, I don't want you to think about Ajay. He is definitely not worth your time nor your tears. What I would suggest you to do is to try and get to know Arnav. And before you interrupt let me finish. I'm not expecting you to instantly fall in love with him and neither am I asking you to pretend to be happy with him. He is not Ajay. He is going to be your husband. A person who is not only going to look after you but is also going to be with you at every turn in your life. All I ask is keep a clear slate for him. He is a smart and calculative man. Yesterday had he told me what he was going to do, I may have stopped him. But now when I think about it, I think I made the right decision to trust my daughter to him. And you both look great together too." Shashi laughed as he passed the newspapers of today. Almost every one of them had an article. The photos they had taken yesterday were present in the papers today. The headline read "Princess of Lucknow steals heart of Business Tycoon"

As she read through the papers she felt her cheeks burn again. The stories that these people had come up with after getting their pictures were just unbelievable. They even got statements from some ex-classmate that they always knew she was committed. She never looked at any other boy nor let anyone else flirt with her. Some of the articles felt like she was reading romantic novels.

Khushi was a strong girl. She had always remained strong in tough situations. She held her own even when she had gone to break up with Ajay. She was however quite surprised at how easy it was of letting her memories with him fade away. She never knew what love is. After meeting Ajay she always thought that attraction to a friend of yours is what love is all about. Now she felt uncertain of her definition of love. How could it be so easy to move on? Maybe the fact that Ajay was a lying and cheating skunk had helped her in the process.

"Urgh." She let out a frustrated sigh. "That guy cheated on me with a bunch of strippers? I am so much better than any of those girls. Or am I not beautiful?" She started walking towards the car deep in thought.

"Even Arnav didn't ask me any questions. Doesn't he want to know me at all? Or is it that even he doesn't value me."

As she got into the car she didn't even realize that she had asked the driver to take her to Arnav's Lucknow office. A million questions coursed through her brain. She was shaken out of her thoughts when the driver informed her that they had arrived at the destination.

"What the? Why are we at Arnav's office?"

The driver turned to look at her with confusion and slight traces of fear replying "Ma'am it was you who had asked me to bring you here."

Khushi felt irritated but she took it as a sign. She had to talk to Arnav. And this could definitely not happen over the phone. And the more she delayed the more uncomfortable she was going to be. Khushi was not the kind of person who could keep something that was troubling her inside her. She always spoke her mind even if it was talking out loud to herself. One of the many reason her buaji used to call her Sanka Devi affectionately.

As she walked inside the office she thought about giving a call to Arnav to alert her of her sudden arrival. However the receptionist snapped her out of her thoughts and asked her who she was here to see.

Khushi confidently replied "I'm here to see Arnav."

The receptionist opened her book and asked her if she had an appointment. Before she could answer, Aman quickly came to her help.

He turned towards the receptionist and ordered her "This is ASR's fiance. Don't ever stop her again."

The receptionist quickly mumbled an apology to Khushi but Khushi told her "It's Ok. You were just doing your job."

The receptionist breathed a sigh of relief. She had already made a mistake earlier today of stopping Anjali not knowing who she was and had faced ASR's wrath. She didn't want to have another round of it.

Aman led Khushi to Arnav's cabin. She knocked on the door clumsily not knowing if it was alright to walk inside without doing so. When she heard Arnav's "Come In" she pushed the door open and walked inside.

Into the Lion's Den.
