Chapter 6

On Saturday morning, Viv and Sid were ready. They were going to play ball with the Uncle next door. And Viv had saved his share of Gajar Halva from breakfast for him. Mummy played with them but she played cricket. She couldn't kick a ball. They liked football. As they sneak out of the house, Radha catches them. "Where are you off to?" "Play ball." "And what's in your hand?" "Gajar Halva, for Uncle." "Which Uncle?" "Next house," says Viv. "Nobody play with him, so we play," chips in Sid. "How long has this been going on?" Silence. Radha doesn't know what to do. If she stops them, it undoes all that she has been trying to teach them in terms of sharing and inclusion. She sighs. Why did LD have to come here? "Wait. You eat your Halva." "But for Uncle?" "I'll give you some for Uncle." She spoons some into a plastic container and gives it to Viv. "If he is busy, don't trouble him." "Ok."

LD is reading his newspaper when he notices the twins coming walking hand in hand. Sid with a ball in his hand and Viv with a container. "Are we playing ball?" They nod. "First you eat." "What is that?" "Gajar Halva. Mummy gave." "For me? Are you sure?" asks LD doubtfully. "I took mine but Mummy told me to eat mine and she will give you some. Eat. It's nice." "I'm sure. Does she know you have come here to play?" "Yes. Eat quickly, then we play." "Okay guys. But only if you share this with me." He lifts them on to the table and feeds them. And then they take turns feeding him the halva. His sons. The sons whom he had never held. LD's eyes fill. Radha knew that they were coming here and didn't stop them. There was hope for him! He must and will make it work somehow.

They play a toddlers' version of football. Sid stops playing. He needs to go and he needs to go now. "Sid, what happened?" "Bathroom please. Now." "Come buddy," says LD scooping him up and taking him to the bathroom. He helps Sid and makes him wash his hands. Sid goes out into the bedroom and sees a picture on the wall. Mummy all dressed up and Uncle also dressed up. LD follows him out and sees Sid looking at the wedding picture that he carried with him wherever he went. Oh no. He had forgotten about the picture. "That's Mummy. She looks nice." "Yes she does. Shall we go to Viv?"

Sometime later, Radha's maid comes to collect them. "Ma'am said that they would be troubling you and to bring them home now." "They are absolutely no trouble but they probably need to go home now." "Bye boys." "Bye Uncle." LD's heart breaks. His sons calling him Uncle' instead of Papa'. Well something was better than nothing.

LD goes inside and starts cooking lunch. Dal chaval. He works on some plans as lunch is cooking. He finishes just as the meal is cooked. He eats slowly. The change of weather seems to have affected him. His throat is a bit sore. Maybe if he lies down for a while he will be okay. He takes a paracetamol and gets into bed. He wakes up coughing.

Radha is working with Varun on his project in the living room. She hears LD coughing. She ignores the sound but the coughing is persistent. She cannot ignore it. He is her neighbour after all. "Varun, carry on the way I told you."

She goes to the kitchen and warms up milk and adds turmeric to it. "Sweety, take this to the neighbour and ask him if he has anything for dinner." The maid returns. "Sir drank the milk and says he has leftovers from lunch which he can use for dinner." "How can he eat the leftovers from lunch? Sweety, I'll quickly some thick soup and soft rotis. Take it across before you go home."

Radha makes the soup the way LD liked it best with mixed vegetables. She makes a few rotis and a light sabzi. She also makes a Kashaya. She packs the food in a hot pack and the Kashaya in a flask and tells the maid to take is across. She is not doing this for LD she tells herself. She is doing this for a sick neighbour.

LD is surprised to see the maid back with the hot pack and flask. "Ma'am sent this. Tomorrow is my day off and so I will collect the dishes on Monday." LD opens the hot pack and the familiar aromas of Radha's cooking whet his appetite. He attacks the food like a starving man and is finished in five minutes. Radha still cared about him.

Radha shouldn't melt! If it was me, I would have broken LD's nose but at least she was decent. LD is not doing anything, then why does she want to help him? The help is fine but Gajar Ka Halwa, Nahi Radha, mat piglo! -_-

When will LD even talk to Radha?

HAHAHA! As much as I admire him, he was stupid many times. If he was real, which half LD is, he would probably end up in jail for fraudalently marrying a girl and forcing her to accept the marriage.
