Chapter 7
The next day was Sunday. Banana pancake day. The children have breakfast in the kitchen on Sundays. As she flips the pancakes, she wonders how LD is. Almost as if in answer to her question she hears LD's car start. He parked his car away from the house and she was grateful. The twins were used to having the whole area to themselves and in a place where cars were hardly ever used, they wouldn't be prepared for a car driving up to the building. Sweety took good care of them, but she had this habit of long phone calls and that was when the boys snuck out. But she had been really good when the children were sick.
"Mummy, I want another one." "Is this how you ask?" "Mummy may I have another one please?" asks Varun. He loves pancakes. They reminded him of Papa. The day passes of quietly. In the evening Radha takes the children to the park. Varun and Charu head for the swings but the twins prefer their ball. They look around hopefully to see if Uncle will appear magically but there was no sign of him.
On Monday morning, Sweety is there to take charge of the twins and Radha, Charu and Varun walk down to the point where Radha parks her car. LD watches them from his window. He sighs and gets ready for work himself. He is not going to the Main Campus today. He is going with the boss to the school's camping site. "It's about 40 km away from here. It is a beautiful place and kids love going there. But I have always been worried about the safety. We use tents and now in addition to bison we hear rumours of leopards and even a tiger being spotted in the locality, the camps are giving me sleepless nights. I am trying to have some more solid structures, but the camping department feels that it will ruin the camping experience of the children."
After they survey the camp area, they eat the packed lunch that has been provided. The boss was right. The place was beautiful but deceptively calm. "Sir, can we go around, the rest of the property?" "Sure, but it is a hard hike." It's almost 3 by the time they are done. "Mr C, we need to go. I have a meeting at 5."
As they drive back, O'Brien asks the question that he has been yearning to ask. "How are things between you and Radha now?" "The same. She doesn't speak to me. The twins came over to play over the weekend but she didn't stop them. I was coughing badly on Saturday and she sent over some hot milk and dinner through her maid. But that is about it." "It will happen boy. Just don't give up." LD smiles. "Ten years ago, her mother told me the same thing."
When they reach town', LD is dropped home. As he walks towards the house, he notices the twins in the garden with the maid. "Shall I return the dishes now?" "I'll come with you and take them, Sir." LD opens the house and takes out the dishes that he had washed and dried - Radha liked her dishes to be dried. "Didn't the boys go to school today?" "They don't go to school yet. I was on leave last week and so Ma'am took them to the school crche. They want to run and play football but I can't cope with running behind them. So we are in the garden, but they are not very happy."
"If their mother won't mind, send them over, I'll play ball with them. Just give me five minutes to change." "Really? That will be great!" Viv and Sid are happy playing ball with LD. This Uncle is so nice. Next time Mummy made pancakes, he should take some for Uncle, thinks Viv. 45 minutes later they are tired and ready to go home. LD goes to shower and change. He needs to cook dinner. Too bad he wasn't coughing today. A plan forms in LD's head. If he comes home early every evening, he could play with the boys for an hour every day. He wonders if the boss will be okay with that.
After dinner, LD goes for a walk and notices the huge blue gum trees all around the campus. "They look so magnificent," he thinks, "especially the one near the house. But the overhead power lines did not seem to be a good idea. He would talk to the Maintenance Manger about switching to underground cable.
He reaches home a tired but happy man. Before he goes to sleep, he kisses the picture of Radha on his locket. He falls into a deep sleep - the first time in three years.
