Reasons to be kind

Janaki Athai and Amma went back to the kitchen to appear busy Bala got up and went to the baby's room

Akka followed him slowly...

Lasya stretched and turned she plced extra cushions by her feet and back so she wouldnt roll over

"I love her clothes" she said sadly

"I KNOW u wanted a girl" Bala smiled
"Cute aa irukum to dress them up no?" Akka asked smiling fondly at the gorgeous Lasya

Bala nodded

"I cant have another one" Akka was hoping for a persuasion

None came...

"Hes cute di Vandu" Bala walked over to his own creation and lay by him, he slept soundly

"Hes just perfect no?" Akka smiled

"He will be beautiful like you" Bala smiled

"Chumma ice vekkaade da" (dont butter me up)

"No di... I am telling the truth... everyone is beautiful in your family... Amma, Ishita... u"

"Ishita is gorgeous" Akka said fondly

"Punjabi paiyan valaichu pottutaan" (A punjabi boy got her)

"I am happy he came da"

"I am too... I hope he takes her with him..." Bala said

"I hope we can have a grand punyajananam da" Akka placed her arzi cleverly

"Grand na?" Bala became wary

"Umm... u know... Munirka Residents Association Community Bhavan" Akka began

"It costs Rs.50,000 for a day raja" Bala made a face

"Really?" Akka was shattered

"Ya... I asked the neighbors across if they will let us use a couple bedrooms,
the the young couple upstairs, Appa's newspaper buddy is willing, the neighbors across are not" Bala explained about hosting family

"Hmm... I will ask Appa if we can get Kidwai Nagar NDMC Hall" Akka was still on the hall

"Everything will be expensive kanna"

"HOW Bala its not even North Indian wedding season" Vandu argued

"Adukosram? "Bala was beginning to be infuriated... (So?) "In wedding season it will be 1 lakh now it will be Rs.80k" Bala scoffed

Akka nodded

"I was hoping I can invite my faculty, u can invite ur branch"

"Hmmm..." Bala nodded

"how much do we have in savings? after paying the hospital?"

"Avan leave vangi kuduthano namba pozhachom" (R&B got u time off until the baby WITH pay, we are saved now)

Akka smiled joyously

"My pay check came on the day this rascal was born... Appa va panathoda paaka vandrikan" (he brought money for his Dad)

Bala derived joys from simple things too

"He is a very lucky boy, Amma said according to his birthstar" Akka gushed

"I hope to win the lottery di" Bala's eyes glistened "Pasangala nanna padikka vekka mudiyum,
avana paar raja madiri irukkan CMU, double Masters... own company" (I can educate the boys well, look at R&B looks like a prince)

Akka looked at him in awe "Hmmm... he doesnt even need the money"

"Paathukko... YET he did good" (see?)

"Hes very quiet da" Akka was in awe

"He is worth over 100 crores? 1000 crores? cant remember... Mihir said in poker one night" Bala whispered

"WOWWW" Akka was seriously enamored

"If ur Appa finds out he might like him more"Bala scoffed

"Or hate him more..." Akka finished with a philosophical audible sigh...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Bala and Akka came out after a half hour II was in the living room, with Athai
R&B was in the balcony taking a work call
Appa was helping Amma move the grinder in the kitchen to a spot convenient
"I thought u guys were on baby number 3" II chuckled
"Podi... go make baby number 1" Akka chuckled
"did u feed him?" Athai asked
"A lil better Athai" Akka smiled
"Vandu, I will go drop tiffin raja... maybe they will only want salted lassi at night" Bala spoke in a more mellow tone
"Fine... come back da" she said softly
"Ofcourse... I want to see what the vaal (naughty boy) does in the evening" Bala grinned
"Hes like her when awake, so most likely he will want to dress up and roam Sector 12, or go to Sector 1 Market." Akka laughed
"I like Malviya Nagar and Sarojini Nagar" II mumbled, offended
"Edo" (whichever) Akka teased
Bala left with the bag
Appa smiled at his two darlings on the couch, third too his sister Janaki
"where is R&B?" he asked
"In the balcony" II said
"Why is he there?" Appa asked
"taking a call pa" Ii exlained
"No no... it will be very hot.. ask him to go to my room" Appa offered
II smiled in gratitude..."solren" she nodded
"Get up and tell him no?" Akka was smiling too, at Appa's rare display of concern
All was not lost afterall...
Just like any middle class family, they were all finding reasons to to be kind
Good evening Nisha and others in west. Good morning All in East.
we in middle class always wait for windfall gains. Want all our woes to disappear one fine day.
I know parents Biggest achievement in middle class is to give best possible education to daughters.
Bala rightfully didn't respond. It would certainly hurt vandu more if he replied in negative.
I haven't heard any of my married friends wanting to go for second. Reason: 1st the education is becoming costlier day by day. People are paying for nursery more than my entire education fees. Difficult to give time to kid. Third now all have become brats.
Sorry Nisha, I guess you very well know how each one of us wait for update and you want to give us one come what may and inability to do that for some reason makes you feel sorry.
So its not you but we who should be sorry. It seems we pressurise you.
But our story is such that we always want more.
So well said Pritee
Exactly right, college is the most expensive in this country, even a Bachelors from a Public/Govt University costs $50K. 90% of American parents dont even think about it. They OWE 18 years to their kids THATS IT. Unless the family is wealthy, the kids dont get a 4 year degree. Many Directors and VPs I work with easily clear the $200k mark, but their kids are on their own after high school
In India there arent ENOUGH colleges😡 There is a RIDICULOUS cut off at DU. 99.99% in PCM? REALLY? Thats plain WRONG. Guess politicians have better things to do, like sleeping with Bollywood and siphoning off tax revenues into Swiss Bank accounts to ever invest in higher education
Here, the colleges are open and available, but the costs are punitive. Almost EVERYone I have known in the last 20 years have put themselves through college, or DID NOT GO😭
But here, people have 3, 4, 5, 6 kids even... education until 12th grade is free, there is no uniform either, no text books, just school supplies for $50-$100 a year thats it
An update after the shravu fiasco on vandu and Bala.
They managed to salvage the situation for now. They both have unfulfilled desires, but atleast share it with each other without chewing the other one's head off at most times. Vandu wants a big one but understands that it's a stretch. I really liked Bala acknowledging the dude here.
II has been very subtle and gone quietly doing what's she is used to doing at DII .
Appa is happy , no wrong extremely joyous to show some consideration to the dude.kya baat hai Mr.Iyer.
The flow Of the scene when vandu and Bala come out of the room was visualized so well.
II floating around, R&B taking a call in the balcony, Appa helping Amma move the grinder
I can never tire telling this, it's slice of life.
Thats a huge compliment. THANK YOU. I log on from home and respond to work emails and pull reports as I write the morning chapter. No I am not mahaan... I just LOVE doing multiple things at the same time... I am wired that way I think😭 I always have to be doing TWO things or more... if I am doing one thing then I get bored...
The email failed in my home connection, I was half way done... I have a big review tomorrow from 11 -1 PM so I was preparing for that... not a good day to lose Outlook
Never a good day to lose Maanvi but it happened... what could I do?😭
And I cant tire of telling you this
YOU DONT MISS A THING😳
We all have desires that may be labeled greedy no? We all want that bigger house, that nicer car, we dont want our husband to say "It cant happen" We want them to leave the question unanswered... so we can continue to hope. They are middle class her in laws burden her further, she has been raised being taught "U accept what u get in marriage" But still wants a good life
Note to feminists: PLEASE no bhashans on wife being dependent on the husband🥱... please direct all feminism juices to YHM😆
I just heard from one of my cousins in india who is moving from Delhi to Bangalore that her children had to give an interview in skype to a school before personally appearing for an entrance test. The children are 13 and 9 yrs old. Sort of a screening before the test. And this is not a school for the elite. It's just a good school. I thought, I am really getting out of touch. The capitation fees that we hear is another axe to grind.
