Dutta sensed she was a bag of nerves as she pressed against Krishna and groped for his fingers. Much to Dutta's amusement Roops too reached out for Krishna's other hand. Krishna between the two damsels looked like a victor with his head held high..

"shall we Dutta Bhau? he asked with a degree of authority. Dutta bopped his head sided his palm towards the entrance door and replied with a tender smile to all three of them

" consider it your own home..relax you step into friendly territory". But despite his words of welcome the trio still felt floored by the ambience of Patil Nivas.The high ceilings, the beige slippery ,sparkling tiled hall. In the distant were sights of Sahib's family, some familiar faces like Baji and the stunning sister Kala Tai.. Dutta went ahead slightly, and then stopped as he turned and pointed to the three guests with raised heads and wide eyed as they took in the splendour of the suspended crystal chandelier in the centre of the hall. Small, slow steps progressed further on the shiny floor as Dutta called out to his family from the door

" Aye Sahib, here are the guests.. you can see they are a bit overwhelmed ". Naku looked at the benign looking lady who sat gracefully a in sober silk lilac sari. She sat on a red velvet settee, flanked by Baji and Kala. Yet soon enough Aye Sahib raised her hand and called out tenderly

"come closer Naku.. we have heard so much about you from Baji and Kala, that we felt we were the only one left out of the equation. Namely participating in the happy moment of our older son Dutta's preference.. so come my child".. Naku felt at ease immediately and after she glanced shyly at Dutta she let go of Krishna's hand and briskly walked across the floor, inclined before Sahib's mother and felt her feet. Dutta stood and watched from far as his Aye , took Naku by the hand and looked at Kala who moved to make space, and encouraged Naku to sit beside her. Aye Sahib, tenderly reached out for Naku's hand that rested in her lap. Her old eyes searched Naku 's face and soon after her eyes shone with whole hearted approval, as mothers do when they see their son's choice for the first time

"beautiful! without a doubt.. my Dutta's choice cannot be any less" and she turned to Dutta,

"we like the girl Dutta ! now tell me what you have to say about all this? his mother asked pointedly. Naku blushed as she slide her green eyes towards Sahib and wondered what his reply was likely to be? Dutta pulled his mouth to one side. brought his arms that he held by his side and crossed them across his chest confidently his eyes fixed on Naku's expectant but nervous gaze. But he suddenly felt Krishna's hand on his folded arm. Dutta tore his eyes from Naku and looked down at him. his eyes looked saddened but expectant as he softly impressed upon Dutta..

"Dutta Bhau? what about your Krishna will you not tell Aye Sahib about me? am not your family? Dutta pulled out one of his folded arms draped it affectionately, with visible right over Krishna's shoulders and walked him over to Aye Sahib.

"Aye Sahib , meet Krishna.. stumbled across him homeless on the streets of Patil Vadi .. when I first set eyes on him, he was dirty, ragged, mopping my car clean with a dirty rag.. I felt that he some how he wiped my own wounds of being born abandoned by his parents.. it's like Aye Sahib, I met myself as being in an appalling situation, had you and babba not given me a new lease of life. There and then I decided I would take him under my wing , like you took me Aye Sahib.. and make Krishna part of my family. Naku to supported me and offered him a home where Krishna now lives rather than the streets.. so Aye who so ever is my family , Dutta ,expects you to include in your family too.." said Dutta.

Aye Sahib opened her arms and invited Krishna into them

"come my darling child! from today you are my very own grandson, given to me by my lord Krishna himself, such wonderful are his ways.." and she clasped Krishna to her bosom ,held his innocent face in her hands and declared with a kiss upon his forehead

"you Krishna are the darling child who brought back my lost son Dutta back to us in some way.. he began to notice our value in his life.. so you my child are very special to me"cried Aye Sahib and Krishna too gripped with over exuberance threw his arms around his Aye's neck and clung to her.. Dutta inclined forward gently and pulled Krishna back and whispered,

"Dutta forget you Krishna? won't happen .. as how can I forget my own self ?.. now be sensible and let me deal with the final introduction too" and Dutta turned to his mother

"before I reply to your important question Aye , I feel courtesy demands that I introduce you to Roops.. she is Naku's friend and business partner and a potential for Baji" Baji yelped and took Roops by the hand and hurriedly brought Roops closer to his mother..

"not potential Aye Sahib! but my fixed choice! she is what I always wanted! I mean a girl like her! Baji rattled off. His mother laughed and beckoned Roops and blessed her on the head as she bent down to show her devotion.

"yes we like her Baji.. as long as she knows what she is getting into! my child.. he needs firm handling. Baji has the quality of acting the baby of the family , and that's how he manages to get out of all the niggly tasks of the family" confessed Aye Sahib. Dutta was slightly put off by the remark and added

" he's my brother ,so he's bound to be good hearted like me Roops! he's safe , and I certainly approve of you as his life partner" Baji ran to Dutta and threw his arm around his broad shoulders ,but teased

" but Bhau! don't hide behind me! you reply to what Aye asked you about how you feel about Naku? do tell I am sure she is waiting to hear! insisted Baji as he reeled the focus back to Dutta..

Dutta walked slowly towards Naku who sat beside his mother. He looked at his mother as he offered Naku his hand gently and hauled her up, walked her before the huge pearl effect statue of lord Ganpati . turned to face her, reached out for her finger tips and every one watched with baited breath as Dutta began..

"Naku you know as everyone else does, that I am not the true blood of this family.. try as this family did , they could not check my inner most securities. It's not hidden from you that I am no angel. That I was an abandoned, unwanted orphan, has left scarring and trauma on my soul. Even now I crave to find out about my real mother. Naku, you also know that my Aye has recently revealed that my own mother is alive somewhere.. of which I don't know.. so the storm within me still rages on currently. I cannot guarantee when it will abate? So Naku you have before you a shaken Dutta.. it's upon you now to accept me?.. take a while to think Naku before you respond. Would hate to pressurise you , as Dutta understands that this is not your home ground you stand on, but mine. Keeping that in mind Naku.. I would like to remind you that although I am broken, there is part of me that is intact. In that part I find you Naku.. and I would today before Bappa and all, request you humbly, to fix all that is scattered in me . Make me complete Naku.. come into my life formally and permanently before all our deities, and with the blessings of my family.. Dutta asks you.. will you marry me Nakusha?

Baji shoved two fingers in his mouth ready to give a wolf whistle , but Aye Sahib, raised her palm and so did Kala as she pushed her finger against her carmine lips .Baji realized his folly and pin drop silence fell, as all continued to stare at the profiles of the Dutta and Naku as they faced each other before Bappa's statue. Dutta still held on to Naku's lurched fingers and waited upon her answer. She blushed profusely and then whispered across to him

" what can I say Sahib? you know what my answer will be?" , but Aye Sahib called out

" Naku, my child, Dutta might know ,but this mother along with the rest of his family would like to hear from your mouth if you agree to what Dutta suggests? Naku turned her head towards Aye Sahib and confirmed

"yes Aye Sahib Naku would be blessed to come into this house as a daughter in law.. and as Sahib's life partner." Dutta doubled his stubble chin, hooded his eyes as his face flushed. As cheers, dancing and clapping was invoked by Naku's positive respond of acceptance.

Baji, Krishna, Roops danced with gusto before and around Dutta and Naku. Dutta moved away from Naku as she was pulled and twirled around by Roops. Aye Sahib too stood up from her place and moved to Naku, held her face between her palms and kissed her forehead .To formalize the bond ,Aye pulled off her kadas from her wrist and one by one pushed them through Naku's hand on to her delicate wrists.

" Naku my child , by these kadas, I confirm you as our future daughter in law". Aye Sahib turned to Kala and pointed towards Naku. Kala too smiled and took off a gold chain from around her neck and gently put it around Naku's neck

"welcome to the family Naku, was impressed by you from day one, I am so proud of my brothers choice," and Naku smiled bashfully as she stole sided glances at Dutta who stood beside Baji smiling. Then Dutta looked across to his mother , raised his palms and collected every ones attention , with his guttural voice

" Aye Sahib, how come Baji is exempt from giving his reasons for why .. Roops? I think he should be allowed too" and he turned to Baji,

how about it Baji? we are all waiting?.. ragged Dutta. Baji shook his head side to side and replied

"I thought I 'd never be asked.. so .."and he too took Roops hands and led her before Bappa's statue and continued

"well I won't lie I developed an instantaneous liking towards you Roops, due to your vivacious personality. Baji is not shy to admit that your attractive face is also a big reason for liking you. But one of the main reason is that you and Naku can be together in the same house ,like me are Dutta are..that your bond with Naku doesn't break after she gets married. I know this is not usual , as friends do part from each when one of the gets married. but in mine and Dutta's life we had the chance and we took it, isn't that so Bhau.? he asked Dutta who pointed to Roops and urged Baji

"get to the point Baji, quit beating around the bush! Baji gave a dimpled smile to Roops and got down on one knee and said

"everyone here knows Roops , Baji wishes to marry you for an easy life .. so how about giving me an easy life? and all laughed as Roops too obliged Baji

"sure Baji I too am looking forward to offering you an easy life" Roops replied happily. Again great celebration followed on, and Roops too was offered pieces of expensive jewellery as she too was accepted into this fold. Dutta stared at Naku and with one hand folded behind his back he progressed lazily towards her, leaned sideways to her ear and whispered

"now this time you too need to join in the dancing Naku .. I want to see how you look.. how about it? Naku turned her face sideways slowly and replied

" Naku will.. Sahib, after you dance first"Dutta shook his head and mumbled down at her

"that will never happen Naku , you can dream on.." and Naku giggled but Dutta flared his nostrils and then turned to Kala.

"Tai get with the food bits now , don't forget they have to leave as well" ,Dutta reminded and all proceeded to the dining table and Dutta hoped Aye Sahib would iron out any issues with Naku over the table as it were. Dutta pointed to a chair with his sided hand and Naku sat down at his side at one head of the table. His mother sat reverently at the other head with Kala by her right side. Naku nervously looked sideways at Dutta with her wide green eyes and Dutta doubled his chin at her once, assured her he was by her side. Food was passed around and Naku sat with a minute amount on her plate, with her eye on Dutta's empty plate and he gave her a small slanted smile as he offered her his empty plate to replenish it. Naku looked at him quizzically and he stared at the gujar halwa with a raised eyebrow. She scooped a serving spoon helping and dished it out on his plate and dipped the spoon for a bit more ,but he raised his palm to indicate what she had dished out was enough. Dutta sat with his plate under his nose and waited for her to start. But Naku 's green eyes pleaded for him to eat first. Dutta eyes smiled as he scooped a bit of halwa on his spoon and popped into in his mouth. Sure enough, she followed.. and Baji clapped and nudged Roops beside him

"have you seen a more meant for each other couple than those two Roops? just watch them do the first you act! Dutta just rolled his eyes at him ,but Roops replied with a cheeky smile

"yes I have Baji.. us two!, why you have doubts about it ? she challenged him and Dutta smiled at both of them , as he looked at his mother across the table. Aye Sahib mopped the side of her mouth and turned to Naku

"Naku , we want to formalize something between you and Dutta as soon as possible. So we were wondering when we could meet your side of the family.. we mean an elder". This threw Naku slightly and she gave Dutta a vulnerable glance and waited to be bailed out

"elders Aye Sahib ,she has none, and neither does Roops for that matter.. both have a similar back ground like me. So I leave it in your good hands Aye, to do what you think fit in this case", explained Dutta. Kala put down her spoon in her plate and suggested a possible way out

"Aye as I am the eldest here, if it is suitable to every one present here, may I offer myself as an elder who represents both Naku and Roops? all looked in apprehension towards their mother as she held the final word.

"yes Kala ,your suggestion is a plausible solution, and as such , we formally ask you for the hands of Naku and Roops in marriage for our two sons , namely Dutta and Baji? asked Aye Sahib formally and Kala confirmed she did! followed by a loud cheer from both Baji and Krishna who beat their cutlery noisily at the table! Kala stood up from her place and went around, hugged all her family members , especially the new ones and said

"congratulations every one! and now myself and Aye will join our heads together and work out a suitable date to get the ball rolling". Dutta and Naku both got up from their places at the table and touched the feet of both Aye Sahib and Kala Tai.. Dutta glared at Baji , who in turn jerked his head at Roops and they to offered their reverence and received blessings from the two elders of their family. Dutta looked down at his watch and then gave Naku the sign to get a move on. He brushed past her to go to his mother and whispered

"look I know you want to stop at my place forever, but now is not the time to put it into action" he chuckled as she giggled and watched him touch his mother's feet

"Aye now I have to leave and also drop these three back at the shop. Business picks up after lunch and he turned and yelled at Krishna who tried to hide behind Bappa 's huge statue

"krishnaaa! get a move on! you're holding every one up! Dutta yelled. Krishna slowly emerged from behind the statue and hiked one of his shoulders up, shook his head, pulled his mouth down, walked up and stood at distance before Aye Sahib. Dutta raised his palm and roared

"Krishna what is the meaning of this insolent behaviour, come on I am going to the jeep! follow me immediately ! you hear that! rumbled Dutta and as he turned to see if Krishna moved.. Krishna called out

"Dutta Bhau! don't want to come! I want to stay here with Aye shahib" he said with a face ready to bawl.. Aye Sahib opened her arms and Krishna shuffled ahead slowly towards them as she melted with fond affection for him. Dutta turned and called out from the hall exit

"Aye don't encourage this brat! He too is another Baji , shirks out of work! then he glared and pointed a finger at Krishna

"you! get a move on now! tell me are you going to leave your tais all by themselves? thought you were their BG .. don't you worry about Aye Sahib she has Baji , Kala and in case you haven't noticed Dutta too all looking after her!! but Krishna shook his head obstinately and refused to budge , Aye Sahib added as a consolation.

"look Krishna listen to your Bhau, I'll ask him to bring you back some other time to see me " but Krishna just protested

"no Aye Sahib! I want to stay here..it's such a big place I can play around and hide in places too" he smiled sweetly. Dutta had enough and he marched to where Krishna stood folded his arms and grappled Krishna around his back raised him up from the floor and marched out while Krishna kicked his legs around as he yelled

"put me down Bhau ! put me down I am not a baby! and Dutta growled as he thumped Krishna in the back seat neat to Roops

"you did behave like a baby so treated you like one! so stop crying now! Dutta ordered, sat in his jeep slammed the door and drove to Gul bahar..

Naku sat beside him and gave him sided look. she gulped which told him . let it be. Dutta adjusted his rear mirror and ensured it captured Krishna's tear stained face and then Dutta spoke

"what is it you see me as Krishna? your babaa.. well then people's babba's tell their boys off to don't they?

" they do Dutta Bhau.. but you tell me now when will you take me back to Patil Nivas again? sulked Krishna and Dutta changed the gear, and looked at himself in the shape of Krishna and replied

"will take you their soon Krishna.. now be a good lad get off and help your Tai's to cope with the customers, see there's a small crowd here already? said Dutta as he stopped the jeep and pulled the hand brake up. Once Roops and Krishna had gone, and Naku turned to get off too, he said

" stop!.. she did and gave him a questioning look as Dutta continued softly

" Naku .. when you left this shop an hour ago ,you were single.. now as you return ,you are not anymore.. you are connected to me.. are you happy? Naku 's eyes warmed his face with love as she replied

"ask your heart Sahib.. the answer will be the same as yours..

"thank you for accepting me in your life Naku.."he finished off and then stretched his right arm past her lap and released the car door for her.. she slide out fixed her sari, and swished off towards the shop door.. Naku.. I love you dearly, his heart cried out to her back.. and he slowly turned his face to the road ,switched the engine on and drove off, a little more complete than he was before.

Ravi arrived at Tavde's house and as was expected he was frisked by the guards at the door. His mention of Dutta Patil's name gained him access, straight to the man's study who caused grief to his boss Jhingar. Tavde looked up from his desk , ,felt his thick black moustache and stood up, as with intense eyes he studied the well turned out young man dressed in a tucked in fitted powder blue shirt and smartly tapered narrow fit black trousers. With an eye brow raised , Nana watched Ravi from far and commented

"interesting but I thought you would be in the black security services uniform like Dutta...why ever not?

"with due respect sir! being in plain clothes draws less attention and easier for us to identify potential dangerous elements, replied Ravi as he shifted his eyes around the study window which over looked the main hallway of the house. Where was the person he was meant to mind mused Ravi.Tavde stared at Ravi and reiterated facts

"yes Ravindra ,Dutta must have impressed upon you that our daughter means the world to us. I would expect you to shadow her every move , each time she leaves the house and ensure that she is safely returned to this place" No sooner had he finished when the study door opened and Seema swanned in and realized she had interrupted a one to one meeting between her father and this brawny man young stranger she took a step back and mumbled apologetically

"I didn't realize babba you had company? But her father as she very nearly turned stopped her

"stay child ,it's a good thing you popped by, meet your body guard Ravindra. I have explained my requirements of the job to him and you too may ask him any questions you wish to? explained Tavde than turned to Ravi

"this is Seema ,my daughter for whose security you have been recruited. Ravi looked at the pout mouthed , rather voluptuous looking young woman in a fitted shirt and churridar. Seema, noted his interest , but closed and firmed her mouth. as she looked at her father searchingly

"so does this mean that I can go out and about babaa,?Now all your concerns may be lessened as we have got a person watching my back now?

"yes, that should be fine Seema, but that doesn't mean you should become less aware of your own personal security about yourself ,my child. be vigilant at all times.. your father is an affluent and influential man , and as such a prime target for extortionists in these time. There are lots of needy people who are in wait for easy quick money." explained Tavde and Ravi lowered his gaze to the floor and scratched the top of his brow, to mask his guilt. But soon after he pulled air subtly by his nostrils as he stood smartly with his taut arms by his side. Tavde cast a glance at him and ordered

" best go with Seema ,Ravi and let her chose the car she wants to be driven in". instructed Tavde.

As he waited behind the steering wheel of Tavde's saloon car, Ravi dialled Jhingar's number and briefed him about the latest development. Ravi asked when should he act? and Jhingar replied

"areee! don't be in such a hurry? if the girl is attractive then woo her! and win her trust. it'll make things easier for you.. got that? otherwise you cock everything up! so do what I order you to do! don't listen to yourself! yelled Jhingar down Ravi's phone. Seema came and he popped out of the car , opened the back door for her and with a thanks she slide across the back seat.

Soon after Ravi followed simple directions that Naku gave and reached the flower shop. Seema was greeted at the door by the friendly staff. Seema felt her body guard breathing down her neck and cranked her neck , met his eyes and suggested

"will be safe in here Ravi ,you wait in the car while I look around in the shop!.. Krishna stood before her and smiled cheek to cheek and pointed to both Naku and Roops..

" Seema ma'am want to give you the good news that my both my Tai's are now spoken for! like engaged! Seema 's jaw dropped , as she looked at Naku , aghast

" wot? I mean super news .when did this happen? how come I didn't know? Seema commented gloomily

Naku explained how it all came about and soon after Seema appeared to be calm and Naku showed her around and pointed to the new arrivals in potted indoor and outdoor plants. Although Seema bought quite a bit.. she somehow seemed preoccupied and that made Naku uncomfortable .So after Seema left Naku phoned Dutta who was doing the end of the day paper work in his cabin. One look at her name and he threw one leg on the other, folded his arm that held the phone to his ear and reclined back in his swivel desk chair..

" hi spoken for! what do you want with your would be? he asked with a chuckle. She rewarded him with her typical giggle and then replied

"nothing much just wanted to know what you were doing? Dutta palmed his stubble face with his hand and replied

" why nothing much.. except swatting flies! He jeered and she laughed and he interrupted

" Naku.. now don't be withdrawn.. just tell me the real reason why you have phoned?

"it's not like you think Sahib. I mean yes and no.." she fumbled awkwardly and he lurched forward and poked his elbow on his desk and asked

" yes as in you like me Naku? and no as in you are not sure how I would react to such an admission ? am I correct in my assumption Naku? she raised her palm in consternation at the other end of the phone..

" no Sahib.. it's about something else I am ringing about Sahib.. actually before you ask , it's about Seema.. Dutta stood up at his desk and yelled

"what about her? has something happened to her? hired a new BG for her! he shouted

"relax Sahib she's fine! in fact she came to see me. Her BG drove her here and back . Sahib tell me did you say anything about our roka to her? she seemed in the dark about it. don't get me wrong, but she was very chaffed about both rokas but I felt she may be hurt.. of not being included... just a thought but thought might as well share it with you Sahib. I did right didn't I Sahib? Dutta studied his buffed up nails and sighed and replied

" you did right Naku.. from now on you have all the more right then you did before ,to make me aware of things I tend to overlook. With regards to Seema , yes she is and has been close to our family.. and emotionally fairly dependant on me for support.. may be I should have told her what I was thinking..but even I didn't know what I wanted Naku? things just followed as one thing led to another with us. But have to say Seema played a pivotal role in kicking my hind into action. .You remember just before we went for the picnic.. it was Seema who insisted that I show you in some way that .. ummhh errh ,what I feel for you.. humm sometimes I am such an ass! I overlook small details, which are in actual fact important issues.. thanks for being there to wake me up Naku. For once Dutta made the right choice" he admitted. But Naku veered him back to the purpose of her phone call.

" phone Seema ,Sahib.. she may be smarting.. only you can take away the hurt from her.

Seema studied the back of Ravi's head. but soon enough moved away her eyes off him as she caught him staring at her from the rear mirror. She was hurt today to hear that Dutta was Naku's and not hers. She had never envisaged life without him. Dutta was always there for her. Why does he seem distant from her now? it's not that he's going far from her? like moving out of the area? but it's not the same like it was before. for before she lived in chance.. maybe he would be her's forever to have and to hold on too.. but it didn't.. in fact he never even told her about his plans.. suddenly his phone rang .. her sullen face , changed back to life!

" Dutta.. ring me back after ten minutes, I'll be home by then" she suggested as she didn't wish Ravi to listen on..

She ran to her room and dropped her bags and waited for his call and when it came, she answered

"some friend you turned out to be Dutta.. how could you forget your moaning Seema..? did you think I would be happy in being left out of your life' biggest event..? speak up she yelled Dutta replied curtly

" calm down Seema.. never known you to lose the plot.. get a grip over yourself only then will I bother to explain matters to you! and he waited for a bit and then resumed..

"Aye Sahib wanted to meet Naku.. and Roops both..we all have been talking about their business.. she felt she wanted to meet with them. She did and approved of them... now can I remind you Seema ,you were the one who tipped me to tell Naku how I felt for her.. I did. and I also told every one at home ,in a formal way.. so Aye Sahib has done the "spoken for" ceremony with Naku and Roops.. now I don't know what you are jumping up and down for?

"Krishna said you were engaged Dutta! she cried and Dutta shook his head..

" Krishna thought giving of jewellery meant a formal engagement.. that's all! besides the ceremony cannot happen without you or the presence of babba Tavde.. honestly women! such drama queens! Dutta complained and ended the call.. Seema smiled and felt content that she still was part of their family.. Dutta's family!

Baji stopped his jeep before the dysfunctional old orphanage of Patil Vadi. He was surprised that the office section still functioned. An old overweight senior clerk type man sat behind his desk and looked up as young Baji walked in. The clerk could tell that this here was a rich guy.
