Part 41

The Killing of Hidimb--Hidimbaa-Bheem

Kunti and the brothers fell asleep under the banyan tree while Bheem stayed awake guarding them. He felt dejected to see his brothers and mother immersed in deep slumber due to severe fatigue. They hadn't eaten anything since the morning and it was already half-way through the night. There were scratches and scars all over their body and they were tossing and turning in involuntary pain even in their sleep. He silently vowed to give all the pain back to Duryodhan, in the first chance he got.

On a Sal tree nearby lived a demon named Hidimb. He was vicious to look at and had red hair and beard. His eyes were blood-red owing to intoxication. On seeing the Pandavs asleep, he entrusted his sister Hidimbaa with the task of bringing him the flesh of the mighty Bheem. But Fate had turned against Hidimb; Hidimbaa fell in love with Bheem as soon as she saw him standing under the tree lovingly thanking God for the peaceful sleep that redeemed the energy and will of his precious family. She changed her fearsome form of a Rakshas into that of a beautiful young maid, and approached Bheem.

She said truthfully, "Beautiful Lord, who are you? Don't you know that this is the forest of the demon King Hidimb, who feasts on human flesh? He is aware of your presence in this forest, and is coming to eat you, but there's no need to worry, because I will save you. Your beauty has enthralled my mind, and I want to marry you! Please awaken your family and I'll show you a way out from this danger."
"I am Bheem, the third son of the great King Pandu. Who needs a way out when I'm here? Go call your brother here, or let him come here. Either way, I promise, he will not go back alive today!"
"Sir, he is very powerful, you will not be able to manage!"
"Let me decide what I can handle and what I cannot!" In the meanwhile, seething due to Hidimbaa's delay, Hidimb had himself come up to the banyan tree and had heard their conversation. He roared in anger on seeing his sister mixing so intimately with a human. He shouted, "First I will kill this man in whom you are interested, then the ones asleep, and then you, piece of dirt on the honor of the Rakshasas!"

Bheem chuckled loudly and punched Hidimb hard on his face. As a response the demon screamed in pain. Bheem quickly glanced at the Pandavs, they were still sleeping, thankfully! Bheem overturned Hidimb and dragged him away by his legs leaving his mother and brothers under the care of Hidimbaa who promised to protect them from any other member of their tribe. A fierce fight ensured between Bheem and Hidimb, as a result of which the forestry around them suffered a huge blow (literally, as many trees were uprooted an the the shrubs crushed by both of the fighters!), and the sound of it awoke the Pandavs who were surprised to see Hidimbaa sitting quietly in front of them. Kunti was overcome with affection for the girl and she spoke to her, "My dear young lady, why are you here, in the forest in the midst of the night? And what is the great noise that woke us up?" Hidimbaa replied coyly, "Mother, its your son, fighting my brother, Hidimb, the King of this forest who sought your flesh." Sahdev was worried, "Why didn't he wake us up? We would have helped him!"
"Actually he did not want to disturb your sleep."
Arjun replied, "But now we should rush to the place where Brother Bheem has taken the Demon, maybe he needs help, what do you say Brother?" Yudhishthir replied, "Yes. Let us go there. We both will go and help Bheem, if he needs our help, while Nakul and Sahdev, will protect Mother and Hidimbaa. Come!"

Reaching the field where the two fought, Arjun shouted, "Brother, leave him to me now! You've already weakened him! Now let me finish him off!" Bheem's hair was ruffled; he was breathing heavily. After throwing Hidimb down on the Earth, he replied, "There's no need of your help Krishna, I can manage him alone!"
"Then what are you waiting for? Finish him off! In any case we need to go off to the town close to this forest, so that Duryodhan may not trace us!" Bheem nodded a 'yes' and thrust another blow on the demon; this time it was fatal and the rakshasa king let out a yell; the last sound heard from him. Then Bheem, in a fit of rage proceeded to kill Hidimbaa but Yudhishthir caught hold of his hand and scolded him, "Bheem! What do you think you're doing? You cannot kill a Lady, not just like that! What has she done to provoke you?"
"Brother you don't understand! She will definitely try to take revenge for the death of her brother!"
"No! She won't, and even if she does, we'll check her. Not now. She hasn't done anything so as to incur our wrath and so Bheem, you dare not touch her."

The five brothers smiled at each other and proceeded for the town. Unnoticed by them, Hidimbaa followed them to some distance. After some time, suddenly Nakul poked Bheem on his back, and all of them turned back, to find Hidimbaa looking fearfully at them. Kunti pulled her close to her and asked, "Why are you following us?" Hidimbaa looked into her eyes and said, "Mother, I am all alone in this forest. I, actually, wanted to marry your son, from the very moment I had set my eyes on him. I know, that you will not deny. I promise I will never trouble any human in future, just let your second son call me wife!"
"Do you really mean it?"
"Yes, yes! With all my heart I mean to marry him! Yes! I will even work till my last breath and teach all members of my tribe live like men and not to harm and human! But I want to marry Lord Bheem!"
"Then, Bheem, it's my wish, that you marry her. Right now!"
"Your wish is an order for me, Mother, but I have a condition too."
"What is it son?"
"My condition is that I will stay with her only till she gets a son, and NO more!"
"Fine. Let it be so!"
The first rays of the sun bore witness to the unusual marriage between a man and a rakshasi. Soon a child was born to them, who was named Ghatotkach owing to his bald head [utkach] which resembled a pot [ghat]. He grew up into a young rakshas within an hour of his birth, and was skilled in various branches of magic. He was made the king of the forest, and Hidimbaa stayed back to mentor him. When the time came for the Pandavs to leave, Ghatotkach said to his father and uncles, "My Lords, whenever you need me, just think of me and I will appear in front of you with my comrades." And with this they bid adieu, as the five brothers proceeded to Ekchakra, the town nearby.
