Part 39

The Race for Syamantak

A few months had gone by since the marriage of Krishna and Rukmani.

One morning, an overseer came to report an extraordinary incident in the city. He reported that all the people of Dwarka had assembled to get a glimpse of the Sun god who had appeared in their land. Krishna chuckled loudly. Rukmani smiled coyly for she had come to know very well, in the last few months, that no God visits a place only to show his face, and the ones who come, they meet her Lord secretly in a chamber that stays locked otherwise. Krishna asked the spy to return to his work and to bring to him the full story of the Sun God descending on earth.

The spy returned at night with the full story :

Satrajit, the treasurer of Dwarka, had gone out to the sea for his morning prayers to Lord Surya. Lord Surya pleased with his worship, appeared in front of him. His dazzling radiance almost blinded Satrajit, and the latter requested his Lord to appear in a calmer form. Hearing this, Lord Surya opened a necklace and said that the jewel in the necklace was the source of his extraordinary brilliance. Thus, Satrajit, asked for the jewel, as a boon offered to him. He had been wearing the jewel on his way back to Dwarka, and this was the reason why people mistook him for Lord Surya. A news is roaming that whoever possesses the jewel will be gifted with 8 Bhaars (Around 120 pounds) of Gold daily. The jewel also ensured that the land it remained in, was absolutely immune to any natural calamity.

Hearing the story, Krishna appeared to be immersed in a deep thought. Though he addressed Rukmani, it seemed as if he spoke to himself, "If this is the power of the jewel, then it is more appropriate that it stays with Grandpa, as a part of the royal treasury, so that the wealth produced is used for the welfare of all the people of Dwarka. But wait, I could raise this issue in the king's council next year, that once we receive the jewel, the gold be divided equally amongst all the kingdoms. No ! Before any such proposal, I need to reform the Kings, or else the resultant pact might turn into a massive war." Rukmani went close and embraced him, "But Swami, before that, you need to convince Lord Satyajit to submit the jewel to Grandpa."
"Yes, you're absolutely right sweetheart, but I'm afraid, that's not going to be a cakewalk for me ! Nevertheless, I'll speak to him tomorrow."

The next day Krishna approached Satyajit, and his proposal was obviously faced by a big fat 'no'. Krishna tried to convince him, "Sir, I'm afraid you don't understand my point. Fine, if you don't want to part with the gem, it's absolutely fine with me. You can keep it, but then, you could just submit the gold that it bestows. Just that !"
"Oh really ? Let me ask then, who worships Lord Surya so ardently, who has pleased him with his devotion ?"
"Sir, its you but Suryadev must have agreed to give the gem to you because he had faith in you that you would use it for the welfare of your fellow citizens ! After all, Gods don't distribute gems just like that."
"Keep your mouth shut you blasphemous prince ! I'm not giving up my jewel at any cost ! Now run away from here before I lose my sense of righteousness."

Balraam roared in laughter when he heard of this unsuccesful effork of Krishna, "Kanha ! I had warned you against that Satrajit ! You chose to ignore the words of wisdom your elder brother tried to push into your head, and now-" he interrupted himself with another loud bout of laughter, "You ended up with no jewel, and yet another interesting name -blasphemous. I hope this lesson will help you to remember to pay heed to your brother's advice from the next time."
"I'll think about that, Dau." he turned before leaving, "And remember one thing, I haven't given up as yet. I'll not rest in peace until that gem rests in our treasury."
"Kanha, you sound quite like our beloved Uncle, who now rests in heaven."
"I can't help it Dau and yes, I need to give Suryadev a sound talking on his choice of devotees."

A few days after the incident, Satrajit was seen at his doorstep wailing, while his friends and family, stood mourning the death of Prasen, a cousin of Satrajit.Prasen had borrowed the Syamantak jewel from his brother, as he went out for hunting. He was found dead the next morning- and the gem was missing. But Satrajit, was more grieved about his gem that his brother. Thus the words came straight from his schizophrenic heart, "Krishna had an eye on the jewel. He even came to seek it. I'll not be surprised if you come to know that he has murdered Prasen and taken away my Syamantak." Krishna, who was then speaking with Satyabhama, the beautiful daughter of Satrajit, overheard this statement and left without another single word. Satyabhama was deeply hurt by this mean nature of her father, she spoke to him in a low voice, "Father, but you had said the Uncle Prasen had been killed by a lion ?"
"Keep your mouth shut, Satya. This matter needs none of your concern."

Krishna urged King Ugrasen to summon all the dignitaries of Dwarka, and got his palace thoroughly searched, while he stood outside with Rukmani. Obviously, the jewel was not there. But, by that time the rumour had already spread that Krishna might be the thief as well as the murderer. This discussion enjoyed a stable backing of Satrajit's allies.

When he came to know of these rumours, Krishna took the permission of the King and went to sight where the corpse of Prasen was found. He saw the footsteps of a lion nearby. So the lion had had killed him ! He took some close friends along with him on this voyage.

The forest was deep, dark, and eerily cold. The deep, dusty greenery seemed to beckon the traveler into the mouth of death. Every time a thorn dared to scratch him,Krishna's followers begged him to return, but Krishna was adamant, "I won't return. If you do not want to follow me, you are free to turn back."

After riding through the deep forest, they reached an open field. The golden rays of the setting sun were harsh as though they were determined to reduce the field to ashes. They rode on. The sun seemed as if it was burning itself for having put Krishna through so much of trouble and humiliation. The temperature was exceptionally high. Beads of sweat appeared on the fore head of Krishna and his followers. Suddenly, Krishna's horse neighed and moved back. Krishna was not surprised. He had expected something of this sort. The lion lay dead on the ground; and the jewel was not there. Without wasting another second, the prince raced his horse along the trail of the footprint of a bear that led the way.

The footprints led them to the mouth of a huge cave. Krishna understood that his friends were already terrified. He smiled and entered the cave alone. He walked throughout the night and when he reached the other end of the cave, the sun had already rose. Krishna was amazed to see the beautiful scenery around him. The contrast soothed his eyes. He washed his face in a nearby stream and entered another cave, which was the largest among all the stood in.

After walking for some distance, he saw a group of bear-cubs playing with some stones, among whom one cub held the Syamantak. Krishna, overcome with relief, approached the cub under the misapprehension that the heart of a bear-cub would melt with his charm, just like that of a human child does. Needless to say, the cub clung on to the gem and shrieked. Though Krishna was able to extract the gem from the hand of the cub, he turned to see a huge bear, presumably his father, who looked at him with great rage. Krishna smiled at Jambavaan, his devotee from his previous birth as Lord Raam. But unfortunately the King of the bears was unable to identify the divine aura common to the majestically serene Raam and the majestically mischievous Krishna, and thus he challenged Krishna to a duel, with the gem at stake.

They fought endlessly for 28 days, with only short breaks for food. At last Krishna thrust Jambavaan on the ground with such force that the latter was unable to get up again. The King of the bears and an ardent devotee of Lord Raam, spoke in a faltering voice, "W-who are you ? I have not been defeated by anyone in the world till now, though only because I have never fought a duel with my Lord Raam. Then ?" Krishna knelt down beside him, and gently massaging his hands, feet and head spoke, "Jambavaan, you just identified me. I am indeed your Lord Raam- born at a different place, known by a different name, offering obeisances to my own idol on the insistence of my mother." In a few minutes all of Jambavaan's pains were healed, and he fell at the feet of Krishna. He fed his Lord all the delicacies of his land, gave away his daughter Jambavati in marriage to Krishna, along with the Syamantak jewel, and led him out to a shortcut to Dwarka.

When Krishna returned with his beautiful bride, he first visited his friends who told him that they had returned presuming his death, after waiting for twelve whole days. They also told him how Rukmani had stopped eating and drinking since he had left the city, and was adamant to starve herself to death. Krishna was deeply affected by the bit of news, "Why didn't you even enter the cave, when you knew where I had gone ! At least you could have come back with Dau ! He wouldn't have returned without entering the cave ! I was there making merry with my old friends and new bride, while my wife was starving herself to death ! Shame on you people !"

Ugrasen called for an urgent meeting of the dignitaries of Dwarka, where Krishna related the whole story and returned the Syamantak jewel to Satrajit. Satrajit was overcome with shame that he had falsely accused Krishna of the theft. he thought hard of ways to make it up with Krishna, and at last he decided to give his daughter Satyabhama to Krishna in marriage.

During the ceremony Satrajit offered Krishna the Syamantak as a gift, but the latter politely refused saying, "Sir, I don't need it. I have enough wealth to support your daughter, and her two sisters. What would I do with the jewel ? I had only come to ask for it, so that might be used for common welfare, which I'm sure you'll contribute in from now. So, I don't need it."
"But Krishna, how would I ever get rid of this guilt ! You were innocent, and still I blamed you- not only of theft but also murder ! How am I to ever forgive myself ?"
"Sir, keep doing good works, spread happiness among people, and all your guilt will vanish ! Only repentance matters, not the gravity of the sin. Now, I see true repentance in your eyes, and I want this to be soon replaced by some more kindness and goodwill."
"But still, I do want to give this to you ! Please !"
"Fine, fine ! You can keep it with you now, and make sure this goes to your daughter after your death. So, she'll get her share of property and you'll get rid of your guilt."
"Fine Krishna, if you say so, I'll make arrangements for that."
"Thank you, Sir."
"Excuse Me, not Sir anymore, son."
"Oh ! Sorry, Father."

Finally when the ceremony was over, Krishna came to bed to see Satyabhama waiting coyly for him. He said, with a large yawn, "Bhama, I hope I can call you that, may I please go off to sleep today ? We can do all the love-filled talking tomorrow night. I'm very tired today. You know, I haven't slept for a whole month. So, I need at least a night's sleep to revive myself for tomorrow's work. I hope you don't mind. Please !" Satyabhama nodded and took up his feet on her lap and massaged them while he slept soundly.
