Chapter 14 (Last Part):
* * * *
The next day they decided to stay in for the evening. They had gone out to see various places the city had to offer and enjoyed themselves. They were currently sitting inside their hotel room, where they were busy watching a movie.
Prem was busy throwing a few comments where else Mukti kept listening to him.
"Can't she see that there's something wrong?" he exclaimed, clearly referring to the main characters of the movie.
"She can't be that blind not to see the small signs he's giving her."
Mukti raised her gaze from the book she was reading - or so trying to read. She took a glance at him and then back at the movie.
"Wow, talk about roles being reversed."
Prem gave her a small look. "You chose the movie to begin with. Anyway" he said while searching for the right word.
"What's the saying in hindi..."
"-Don't!" she warned him with pointing a finger at his direction.
"What?" He asked with a puzzled expression.
"Don't even say it. I hate it when you say those words."
"What? Oh come on" he frowned at her. "I never pick anything on you."
"That's because you don't have anything to hate about me" she said matter of fact.
Prem rolled his eyes as he turned his attention back on the movie.
She went back on trying to read, but an idea suddenly crossed her mind. She placed the book down.
"You know, I was thinking" she started getting his attention. "Now, that we're trying to become better human beings, knowing each other and all. Why not play a small game?"
Prem turned to her. "Alright, you've got my attention, now keep talking. What kind of game?" he spoke in a teasing filled voice.
Mukti narrowed her eyes slightly, knowing well enough what kind of thoughts was forming in the head of his. She threw a pillow at him lightly.
"Not that kind of games."
"Never hurts trying," he grinned.
She turned to him and decided to explain. "Anyway the game is that we write a few things about each other which we want to change - Not necessarily hate, but just change."
Prem nodded feeling interested in the small game. "Alright, I can take a challenge. After all, Prem Sharma Bajaj always wins."
She couldn't hold herself back from acting out. "Oh really? I've heard that name before, it sounds so utterly familiar."
"Of course," he smirked. "It's the name you say during the night."
Her face turned bright red upon his bluntness of words. "Oh god, I thought we agreed on never speak on such matters."
"Correction here, miss Basanti. You agreed not to bring it up where else I just listened."
She shook her head and stood up. "You're hopeless. You're really hopeless. Now should we begin?" she went to get two sheets of paper and pens for them to write.
A moment later, they were both sitting on each side of the bed, starting on their so called game.
Prem was rather lost in how to begin. The truth was there was nothing he could think of which he wanted to change about the woman he called his wife. He tore his gaze away from the paper and toward hers.
Mukti on the other hand was full on busy writing.
He furrowed his brows. "Easy there Shakespeare, you're writing a few notes, not a whole book!"
She raised her gaze to meet his. "Haha, very funny."
A few minutes later, she heard him snicker quietly to himself as he kept writing. She tried to take a peek at the paper.
He looked up trying to shield the paper. "Hey, no peeking."
Mukti simply rolled her eyes and turned her attention back on her own paper.
A moment later they had finished with writing as they sat in front of each other. Clearly very interested in what they both had written out for each other.
They exchanged the papers within themselves where Prem began to read out loud what she had written about him.
"No more what's the saying'." Prem gave her a look.
"No more loud music." He looked at her. "You do know that this will never change."
"Yes it will!" she told him.
"No staying in bed till late in the morning."
Prem couldn't stay quiet anymore. "That's not fair. I have the right to stay in for how many hours I want."
However Mukti moved to her own sheet of paper. She quickly scanned each paragraph and looked up to meet his gaze. She gave him a look.
"Go on and read it," he encouraged her.
She took a deep breath and read it out loud. "Stop being so cute," she continued. "Stop being so darn cute."
"Don't bit your lip." She didn't even notice that she had already done it.
He reached forward to release it. "You know, I mean what I write."
Mukti took a small glance at him. "Now I feel bad."
"You should" he leaned in where he told her to keep reading.
She lowered her gaze down on the paper. Don't be so bossy,' she silently read.
"What?" she exclaimed while she took a closer look at it, just in case if she had read wrong.
She neared the paper.
"Someone needs glasses," Prem commented.
"I already have contact lenses on."
"Clearly you need to go back to old schooled glasses."
She hit him lightly on the arm. "Don't be mean."
"Mean" he exclaimed sitting up probably. He took the paper into his hand. "This is mean,"
"That" He pointed to the paper she was holding. "Is someone being nice... and romantic and for once actually trying to become a better husband,"
She noticed the sudden change into his voice. It was far more serious than before.
"I'm not perfect, Mukti - but at least I'm trying to make a progress here," he said with a hint of disappointment and irritation.
She caught the look on his face and knew it was serious. "Prem.."
He didn't listen to another word as he stood up and stormed out to the balcony.
"Prem wait."
He came to stand outside at the balcony of their room. His eyes followed the beautiful city right ahead of him.
His hands were inside the pockets of his jeans while his jaw was set tight.
She stood by the doorway watching him in silence. She took a few steps forward where she wrapped her arms around his torso and leaned in. "I didn't mean it like that."
"I know you didn't," he said while waiting a few minutes to continue. "I'm trying my best to be the man you want" he whispered.
"I know you're trying and guess what?"
Mukti came to stand in front of him, "you're the right husband I could ever ask for. The truth is that I thought there was no happiness in store for me anymore - that was until I came back and I met you."
He couldn't help but feel touched by her words.
"Besides I like everything about you, even those annoying things you do sometimes."
Prem gave her a lopsided smile and cupped her cheek into his hands. "Love you too."
