Chapter 11

****

Weeks and months had passed by and they kept the relationship going.

The conversation had played a bigger part into strengthening their bond between them.

The families were happy for them both and by the fact that they had given it a try.

Despite being happy in the relationship, Mukti couldn't get rid of the familiar feeling. She still had her doubt to carry out the relationship. The truth was the fact that she had fallen in love with Prem again.

She recalled a moment where they were at her place making dinner together. He had actually showed up at her doorstep with two full bags of fresh vegetables and food they could make.

A heartfelt laugh escaped her lips by the thought of the evening.

They stood side by side busy with the food they were preparing for the evening. The menu which they had decided was chicken with tomato sauce and pasta.

Mukti was busy with keeping an eye on the casserole where the chicken sauce was cooking. Beside her, was Prem cutting the salad and placing it into a bowl.

Suddenly a yell caught her attention. "Aahh!"

She turned to face him, "what happened?" she said, trying to search for the reason of why he had yelled.

He held a tight hold on his finger and squeezed his eyes. She was unable to do anything at all by the sight in front of her.

"I've cut myself!" Prem showed her the finger with the blood on.

"Oh my god, are you okay?" She asked panicky.

"Water! You need to put it under water." She took a look around, "let me just grab a towel."

Prem, who stood watching her every move couldn't hide the grin from forming on his lips, "relax, relax! It's alright."

She looked puzzled.

"It's just tomato sauce," he told her licking it off.

"What?"

Mukti glared at him and huffed where else he stood laughing.

"Come on, Basanti, loosen up a little."

She couldn't believe that he actually would pull a stunt like this. She shook her head at him, "you're too much."

"And you're so small" he said with a teasing smile on his face.

"What? I am not!" she snapped. "I am not small" she said trying to stand on her toes just to make him see.

He smirked as an idea came into view. "You know what?" he started.

He reached forward and made her sit on the kitchen counter. He came to stand right in front of her - so very close to her.

Prem leaned in. "That's more like it."

They were now facing each other where he held her gaze. She wouldn't dare to lower her eyes.

"Now, the height is perfect." He said with husky voice close to her ear.

They had clearly forgotten all about the food they were making.

Snapping back to the present she couldn't help but agree to the fact that she had fallen in love. She was in love but at the same time, she couldn't get rid of the nagging feeling which was constantly bothering her.

Therefore Mukti started to distance herself from him. Prem had started to notice and couldn't blame her though. He knew she was going through a lot of changes - but so was he.

One day, Prem went to her apartment to see what was going on.

He stood outside her building in the rain with a black umbrella. He didn't even care if it was raining or he was getting wet. He was concerned about her and he had waited far too long for this.

A little rain wasn't going to hold him back any longer.

He reached for his cell phone and dialed her number. He heard the phone getting picked up.

"Hello?"

"Look out," he simply told her.

"What? Prem.."

"Look out" he repeated.

Mukti went toward the window and took a peek outside in the dark.

"Prem? What are doing? Are you crazy it's raining outside."

He looked around, "what? Jeez, it's raining, I didn't know?" he joked. "I thought I brought the umbrella for fun."

She shook her head at him as she closed the window and went downstairs to open the door for him. They stood inside the hallway of the building.

"Seriously, you're impossible." She exclaimed.

"Well, the name Prem Sharma Bajaj isn't for fun, now is it?" He smirked.

They stood in silence for a short while. She turned to him with a serious expression.

"What are you doing here?" she asked softly.

"I wanted to see you" he confessed. "Why do I get the feeling that you've been distancing yourself?"

She wrapped her arms around her body. "I don't know.."

"You do know," he told her.

He studied her for a while, trying to read her body language and what she was thinking at the moment.

"Tell me, after all the things which we've been though, has it ever been easy?"

She didn't answer him.

"No," he answered.

"Then why should this be any different? Look, we can handle whatever life throws our way - and we will make sure to hold on." He paused.

"If you're with me?" he asked with hopeful eyes.

Mukti couldn't say no to him. Those eyes didn't allow her to say anything. It had been days since they saw each other and part of her did miss him.

"Come inside, otherwise you'll catch a cold by standing here."

They took the elevator and came inside her apartment. Thankfully his clothes didn't get too much wet. It was only his white shirt which was drenched a bit.

She gave him a towel where he lightly dried his hair and took off his shirt where she placed it on the heater. She found herself staring at his body even though he wore an undershirt.

She somehow couldn't tear her gaze away from the well-formed chest and his strong arms. She had sudden urge to run a hand through his chest just to feel the muscles he had been trained hard to get.

She felt herself getting flustered by the thought so she shook her head. She went inside the kitchen where she turned on the cattle so she could make coffee for them both.

She took a small glance inside the living room where he was sitting. She went back inside to place a few things on the table. She was about to get back, but Prem grabbed her hand, stopping her from leaving.

She turned around and caught something in his hand. She wore a shocked yet puzzled look. He was holding a ring.

"For the past 5 years I've been carrying this with me. I guess it gave me hope of the fact that I would see you again - hope of getting a second chance and make you mine."

She watched his expression as she sat down on the couch in front of him. "I'm not lying when I tell you that I love you. I wish I could change everything - but this is what life is. I wish I could change my childhood, but I can't."

He studied her for a second, trying to read her expression.

"What are you afraid of?" he whispered with was full of emotions while slowly nearing her.

Just by hearing the voice made shivers run down her body.

"What are you afraid of, Mukti?" he whispered again.

She caught his gaze and held it. It was like she could see his inner thoughts by the intense look he wore.

Thousands of thoughts filled her mind. What was it made her so afraid?

Thode bhare hain hum, thode se khaali hain
Tum bhi ho uljhe se, hum bhi sawaali hain
Kuch tum bhi kore ho, kuch hum bhi saare hain
Ik aasmaan par hum do chaand aadhe hain

"Any other woman would be afraid by the amount of things I've been through - and I'm not saying you haven't been through anything." She quickly replied the last part.

"It's just that we're two broken souls."

"... Which can heal each other. Let me heal you" he said burying his hands into her hair as he made her look at him.

Do raaz milte hain, Humraaz bante hain
Sannate aise hi aawaaz bante hain
Khamoshi me teri, meri sadaayein hain
Meri hatheli me, teri duaayen hain

He brought her closer to him as their foreheads touched against each other.

"Let my love heal you."

She could feel his hot breath on her face as she closed her eyes. She didn't respond to what he said.

All of her doubt vanished along with being afraid.

Opening her eyes, she cupped his cheek and looked into his big brown eyes. She witnessed love and hope in them - something she had longed for in years.

"I think I can say yes to that" she whispered with a smile on her lips.

Ik saath tera ho toh sau manzile ho
Tanhaai teri, meri mehfile ho.

She reached forward and buried her face inside his chest - allowing her to feel the muscles she had been thinking of so many times during her stay.

He felt his emotions run wild by the sudden contact. He wrapped his arms around her in a protectively manner and held her close.

How long he had waited for this moment to arrive. He held on to her, feeling her smooth skin caressing his.

Chapter 12

* * * *

Six months went by and to everyone's settlement Prem and Mukti had finally tied the knot.

There was neither doubt nor pain which could separate them from each other. They had seen enough to know that there were things in life which were important for them.

Uska hoon uss me hoon uss se hoon
Usi ka rehne de
Main toh pyaasa hoon hai
Dariya woh zariya woh jeene ka mere

Prem and Mukti came home late night where they found the house empty.

The elder of the house were at Sneha and Raj's place for a visit.

They were laughing heartily as they walked up the stairs, clearly have enjoyed their evening together. Prem couldn't take his eyes off her. She looked breathtaking throughout the evening. They reached their room as he grabbed her hand and bringing her close to him.

He smiled in a teasing manner and caressed her cheek.

"You look beautiful."

She smiled by his words, "well, you don't look bad yourself either." The black shirt did in fact look good on him.

She was about to leave, but stopped her with placing a hand on the wall. "Is that so?" he said getting closer to her neck where he brushed his lips against her skin.

She closed her eyes as jolt of shock went through her body - jolt of pleasure.

He kissed the top of her head as she raised her head where they held each other gazes. He brushed his lips against her cheek, which made her tightened her hold on his arm. He then went close to her ear, where she could easily feel his hot breath caress her skin.

"I'll be gentle" he promised.

Mujhe ghar de gali de shehar de
Usi ke naam ke
Kadam ye chale ya ruke ab usi ke vaaste
Dil mujhe de agar dard de uska par
Uski ho woh hasin goonje jo mera ghar

All the years which they had spent apart had finally come to an end. They could let the emotions loose which they had hidden from one another - hidden from the world.

She slowly opened her eyes, "You always are" she whispered back not sure if he had heard it or not.

With unsure hands, she went to his shirt where she took her time on the buttons. Prem watched her intensity and wondered how she could look this beautiful yet innocent at the same time. He sensed a bit of shyness from her, so he took her hands into his and carried her to the bed where he placed her down in a gentle manner.

His eyes were locked with hers.

I've always wanted this," he gently whispered with heavy emotions coming through. They had been through a lot in the last few years - they deserved peace in their own way.

He reached out and moved her hair away from her face, but his eyes caught something falling from the side of her eye.

A tear.

A lonely tear had escaped her eye.

Prem lightly brushed it away as he felt the water between his fingers. Something clicked into his mind when he couldn't believe what step he had actually taken.

How could he do this? How could he do this to her?

"I-I'm sorry." He stood up but couldn't meet her eyes. He backed away from her, as if he couldn't breathe and came to stand by the window of their room. Heavy thoughts began to circle around his mind.

Mere hisse ki khushi ko hansi ko
Tu chaahe aadha kar
Chahe lele tu meri zindagi par
Ye mujhse vaada kar

Mukti was beyond confused by the sudden change in his body language. He was at ease a minute ago, and now it looked like he was tense and disturbed. She stood up and made it toward him where she wrapped her arms around his well-build torso.

She leaned in where she nuzzled into him.

"Don't!" Prem said softly with a hint of edge into it. She noticed the small change as if he was trying too hard to say the word.

"Don't what?" she said now facing him.

He was trying his best to avoid her gaze. Those eyes were what draw him to her in the first place. Those brown eyes which held a hint of innocence and playfulness did something to him.

"Don't make me lose control. I wouldn't be able to hold back" he truthfully confessed.

She was beyond surprised to hear such confession from him. If this had taken place years ago, then he wouldn't even give it a second thought.

A new feeling evoked within her by the man she saw before her. Prem was indeed different. He had changed into a better person. In that very moment she knew she could trust him.

She could trust her own husband in not to hurt her.

Mukti could easily see the internal battle he was going through, perhaps trying to convince himself, in not to take the step.

She came closer to him and looked up, meeting his eyes. "Would that be such a bad thing?"

She saw the need and passion in his eyes, while he witnessed forgiveness and trust in hers.

"I want to relive the moment we've taken for granted, Prem."

And that was enough for him.

It was enough for him to hear her soft voice which made him loose his senses. Yet, he promised himself that he would take it slow with her. Every touch, every caress would be gentle.

He wanted to remember everything, every structure so he could save it in his mind.

Uske ashqon pe ghamon pe dukhon pe
Har uske zakhm par
Haq mera hi rahe har jagah har ghadi haan umr bhar

They healed each other for the wounds they had come to experience by the unknown destiny.

Prem reached out and gripped strongly into her hand.

By doing that she had already felt so many strong emotions coming from him. As if he was afraid to lose her again. She reached out her hand to touch his cheek.

"I'm here to stay" she told him with a light whisper.

"I know, and I promise to hold on to you." He whispered back.

Ab faqat ho yahi woh rahe mujh me hi
Woh juda kehne ko bichhde na par kabhi.

Mukti buried her face in his chest as she hugged him close. The words he had said kept echoing in her mind. She closed her eyes as darkness overtook them both.

-----

The next morning:

Mukti woke up the next day, feeling flustered and sheer happiness run through her body. She couldn't really believe where life had brought her.

The only reason of why she had returned back to the loved city was to be able to start a new chapter of her life - and oh boy, did she start a whole life here.

Her mind recalled the previous night she and Prem had shared. The words which they had exchanged set a sudden calm feeling in her stomach.

She yawned slightly and reached out for the other side, only to find it empty. She opened her eyes and saw no one there.

Prem wasn't there.

A sudden feeling of Deja vu came crashing down upon her. Panic and old memories invaded her mind. She had been in the same situation years ago when she was left alone.

But, would he really just leave her alone all by herself in the next morning? Could it be right? Did last night mean nothing to him?

Part of her felt ashamed of thinking these thoughts but she couldn't help it. The fear of it might turning out to be true was far too great for her.

Mukti quickly stood up and checked the bathroom, only to find it empty as well.

She ran a hand through her hair when she noticed something. The sound of the gates being opened filled her ears. Had he left her alone?

She made it toward the balcony of their room and removed the cream colored curtains to the one side. She opened the doors only to be surprised.

She didn't even notice the warm wind caressing her skin as a sudden relief ran through her body.

Prem was standing before her with his back facing her, talking on a phone. He was wearing grey sweatpants and a white t-shirt.

He turned around meeting her gaze and smiled warmly at her.

Something made him narrow his eyes for a slight second but quickly brushed it away. He was still busy talking on the phone when he reached out two fingers, indicating that he was going hung up soon.

She nodded as panic and disappointment left her expression and relaxed a bit. How could she even doubt him?

Prem hanged up and joined her with a smile. "Morning, you're up. Did you sleep well?"

She nodded as she brushed a lock of hair behind her ear. "Yeah."

He nodded as they made it inside the room. He already caught the expression she wore a minute ago and knew what was thinking.

He turned to face her. "You thought I left - that I would leave you alone? Again." He said lightly.

She looked up to meet his brown eyes. It wasn't a question from his side but more like a statement. "No, I was just... I.."

Mukti couldn't help but feel ashamed of even thinking such thought. She was snapped back to the present once she heard his voice.

"I know it happened years ago, but I was a different man back then. I wouldn't do anything like this ever again." He cupped her face as he starred into eyes.

"I'm sorry, I was just worried." She tried to explain and lowered her gaze.

"I'm terrible, aren't I?" she blabbered. "I just can't get the small feeling out of my head. I do try, but it's always there."

He shook his head at her, "you're not a bad person, Mukti" he told her.

"Any other woman would have done the exact same thing. The most important thing is that you're trying. That we're both trying out best."

Mukti smiled slightly upon seeing the soft look on his face.

"Why don't you go and freshen up. I'm sure Mother India is waiting for us downstairs." He watched her leave for the bathroom to get ready for the day.

He stood back as he ran a hand through his hair and took a deep breath.

Never in the world would he ever miss the opportunity to be this close to her. He had lay next to her while watching her calm feature with silent eyes. Wondering if he was even worthy of having her in his life.

His intention was to lay asleep next to her, but an important call from work had prevented him to do so.

Chapter 13:

* * * *

The couple had decided to take a small vacation as lately they had been devoting themselves in their work. Therefore they decided to spend a week at the beautiful country of France where they managed to settle a few meetings before hand.

Satisfied with finishing their work, they took the leave to arrive at the hotel which they had booked for a whole week.

Mukti was roaming around in the room getting ready for the day. She had just finished applying a light make up and got out from the bathroom. She made her way toward the table where a map was lying. She took a quick glance at it, trying to find all the places they had agreed to see.

Her eyes went toward her husband lying in the bed on his stomach. He had one hand under the pillow as he was sound asleep.

She rolled her eyes by the sight. She tried to wake him up before she went to the bathroom, but no movement was evident from him.

She walked over to stand in front of him. "Prem wake up already. We've still got to see the whole city."

He muttered something in his sleep which she didn't catch.

"Prem!"

"Uhf, what's your problem, Basanti? Let me sleep." He pushed his face into the pillow to prevent more sound from his wife.

Mukti placed her hands on her hips and looked at her husband. She silently thought a few ways of how to wake him up.

Should she hit him with cushions?

Throw water at him?

Or use the Choti-Maa-Card?

She dismissed the thoughts and raised an eyebrow at him.

"You know, I would have believed that you may have known a woman called Basanti which you can't forget in your past life."

He sighed and raised his face to answer her. "Yes and she's a Chasmish."

She played along with the act. "She wore glasses?" She asked suddenly very interested.

He shifted into his back and looked at her. "Yes and it's only you my dear Basanti."

She placed her hand on her cheek, "Oh it is? Oh my I didn't know? I feel so honored," she dramatically exclaimed.

Prem rolled his eyes where else Mukti raised an eyebrow at him. "Oh, in case you've forgotten I don't wear glasses anymore."

He smirked and got a hold of her hand and pushed her down on the bed. "But you did once."

"Yes once, but not anymore. Serisouly, Chashmish? That was years ago, besides..."

He raised his hands. "Woah, wait a minute, do you know where I'm going with the name Basanti for you?" He made a talking signal with is hand.

Mukti hit him on the arm. "I don't talk that much, like you say I do."

He raised an eyebrow her.

"Have you forgotten the night were we everyone fell asleep because you talked non-stop? Even Daddy Cool and Mother India fell asleep."

"They were tired!"

"So you keep saying!" he smirked.

"It was 3 am in the morning!"

"Whatever" he shrugged his shoulders.

"Urgh, you're impossible!" she stood up in a quick motion and was about to leave.

"Wait, okay, okay. Alright, listen to this." He stood up from the bed and turned her around so she could face him.

"I like the way you talk - in fact I adore it!" She glared at him and turned around to walk away.

"I swear it's true!" he stopped her with grabbing her hand as he leaned closer.

"And what I love the most is the way you say my name - especially the way you said it last night."

Her cheeks turned bright red and she couldn't shake the feeling, that wonderful feeling, which was invading her heart.

"Last night mean the world to me," he gently brushed his lips against her forehead. He decided to leave her at that and got inside the bathroom to take a quick shower.

She shook her head and decided to wait for him so they could go out.

----

A few hours later they had seen different places which they very much fell in love with. Mukti had already agreed on finding an apartment and settling here for good, but Prem had laughed and pulled her out from her dreamland - Not that he would mind settling here either.

The couple moved on to a caf as they became hungry after walking around from exploring the city. They managed to find a caf where they sat outside so they could enjoy the weather. It was warm yet a light air was caressing their skins just the way they liked it.

They just finished eating their meal and turned their attention on their cold drinks which they had been served.

She sat admiring Prem for a short while. He wore a light blue shirt with sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The top buttons undone only made him appear more handsome.

"What?" he asked her.

She shook her head as she took a sip from her cold juice. "Nothing."

"There must be something," he asked knowing well enough that her eyes were fixed on him.

"Nothing, I'm just.."

"..Admiring my good looks?" he said smirking as he leaned back into his chair with eyes still locked to each other.

Oh, two can play the game'
, she thought silently.

"Admiring the weather" she replied back mirroring the same expression he was wearing.

He grinned thinking it was a good answer. "I'm admiring the weather as well," he said eyes never leaving hers.

"Is that so, what do you think about it?" she asked.

"It's beautiful, fresh and I somehow never grow tired of staring."

He took a sip and asked, "What about you?"

"It's handsome" she blabbered without realizing that she had gone straight into his trap.

Damn it!'
she thought.

He grinned victoriously. "Wow, it's the first time I've heard someone comment on the weather as handsome."

She narrowed her eyes, "you did this on purpose! You knew well enough that I was staring at you."

"Well, I can't help it now can I? I mean I'm just too good looking."

"Please, don't flatter yourself too much."

"Oh, I'm not the one doing it."
