Chapter 9:

Prem however already suspected something was wrong. "Are you alright in there?" he asked in a concerned voice.

The man tightened his hold, indicating that she should make him leave.

"I'm fine. There's nothing to worry about. Look I-I'll call you tomorrow. I promise."

He responded a few seconds later, which shattered her heart into pieces. "Okay, I'll leave you alone then."

Mukti closed her eyes as she allowed the tears fall freely from her eyes. She wanted to let out a scream and tell him to turn back around and save her.

Save her from this hell she was going through again.

All she wanted was to feel secure in his arms - but she couldn't.

How she regretted the few days of her life. How she regretted the decision she had not taken.

Wasn't it fair to give someone a chance to prove themselves again?

The sudden movement brought her back to the present as he pushed her inside the living room. He smirked slyly as he made it toward her.

"So, where were we?"

Mukti couldn't help but take a few steps back - away from the man who was standing in front of her.

He was about to reach out for her, but stopped once he heard a faint noise behind him. He was sure of the fact that he had heard something from the hallway.

She on the other hadn't heard anything as she was too caught up in her fear.

He turned around and moved to the hallway to see if everything was it should be. He took a glance around and got back into the room.

"Too bad that you're all alone and can't do anything." The smirk still visible on his face.

He moved closer to her but suddenly something caught her eye. She saw someone attack the man from behind which gave her the chance to move further away from him.

Raising her gaze, she saw Prem taking a hold of the man's collar and connected his fist with his jaw.

He felt himself getting furious each punch he managed to lay.

A burning anger ran through his mind and body.

He was about to punch him again, but was pushed away and took the chance to run out from the apartment as fast as his could.

Prem was about to run after him but stopped when his eyes caught the brunet curled by the wall in shear fear. His eyes were still furious but were quickly replaced with a concerned look.

He turned to her, "Mukti? Are you alright, are you hurt?"

He reached forward but she backed away as if his intention was to hurt her.

"Relax, I'm not going to hurt you." He paused, trying to find some kind of sign to go on.

"Mukti, it's me, Prem."

How did things turn out like this? It was like she was in some kind of shock. She wouldn't let him near her.

He had been there at a same situation years ago. It was during a presentation where he met up with her at the bathroom to question her about a project she was head of. He still remembered those brown eyes which held so much pain and fear in them.

Never in a lifetime would he forget those eyes pleading for him to stay away - to not touch or hurt her.

He shook the memory away, as he tried to calm her down. She raised her gaze and knew who was in front of her. He carefully placed a hand on her arm and brought her close to himself.

"Ssh, I've got you. I've got you now. Relax, I'm here, no one can hurt you."

Tears flew from her eyes as he continued to hug and console her. His mind was too fragile despite the words he was whispering.

"Listen to me, it's over! He's gone and you're safe, alright. You're safe, Mukti." He got a hold of her face, looking straight into her eyes.

"It's over. He's gone."

She shook her head, "no, he..."

He buried his hands into her hair and made her look at him. "Listen to my voice. It's over. You're safe!"

Prem wrapped an arm around her in order to calm her down. She was shaking violently and taking ragged breaths.

He moved her closer and rocked her gently, trying to let the painful feeling wash away. Eventually her ragged breaths were replaced with slow and calmed ones.

Prem looked down at her and saw that she had drifted off to sleep.

He gently stood up, carrying her still form in his arms and placed her ever so lightly on the bed. He placed a blanket over her and tucked her in with gentleness.

He stood studying her for a while. He slowly reached forward and lightly brushed a few strands of hair away from her delicate face.

"I wouldn't let anything happen to you, Mukti. Not this time," he whispered.

Prem went inside the living room where he took a chair back with him to the bedroom and placed it near the bed. He sat down and watched her.

His brown eyes were fixed on brunette as he silently watched her sleep throughout the night. He vowed to himself that he would never leave her side.

-----

The next morning:

Mukti stirred lightly in her sleep as she opened her eyes. She took a quite look around her surroundings when she felt flashes of last night came crashing down on her. She felt sudden relief by the fact that the nightmare she was struck in was finally over.

Prem who was already awake sat watching her in silence. He saw her sitting up in the bed as her eyes caught him sitting.

Mukti on the other hand couldn't believe that he had stayed the night over to watch over her. Was he awake the whole time? Did he get some sleep?

"Morning, how are you feeling?" she heard him speak.

"Uh, I don't know?" she said while reaching up to touch her forehead. She felt a small bandage there.

"You've got a small bruise there. I bandaged it while you were asleep. It'll be gone in a few days."

She nodded and couldn't help but feel thankful for him.

Prem reached forward and handed her a glass of water, so she could drink it. "Here, you should drink this."

She muttered a thank you, and took a small sip. Her eyes were wandering around her bedroom, trying hard to figure what to do.

Should she look at him? Should she say something?

She wasn't fan of awkward silences.

She wasn't the only one who was having the same thoughts. Prem didn't know whether to start a conversation or not.

A few minutes of silence passed as none of them spoke as they were too busy with their own bundle of thoughts.

Mukti bit her lip and finally looked at him. He looked tired and worn out. What caught her attention the most was the bandaged hand which left so many questions in her head.

She settled with a different question which was dominating her mind.

"How did you know?"

He raised his gaze to meet hers as he already knew she would ask the question. It took him a while for him to respond.

"I knew something was wrong" he said as he took a glance down at his hands.

"When you said you'll talk to me the next day, I knew something was wrong," he sighed as a bitter laugh escaped her lips.

"Just doing something I should have done years ago."

The man before her was a different man. He wasn't the one she had hated for years. This man was not UD or anyone else - but Prem.

She felt a weird feeling run down her body by the sudden realization. Guild started to creep around her by the way she had behaved lately.

She opened her mouth to speak but no sound would come out. What was happening to her? What was the feeling she was so caught up with that she forgot how to speak?

Was it guild, pride and ego? Or was it something entirely different feeling?

"I'm sorry. I don't know how to thank you for what you did. If it wasn't for you then..."

"Don't!" he warned as his gaze rose from the floor.

His hands were clenched into fists and jaw set tight. She saw the same fire burning in his eyes like she did last night. It was quickly replaced by a soft look.

"It's over and you're safe - that's all that matters. Nothing is going to happen to you. Not anymore at least."

He whispered the last part, but Mukti had heard it. She knew what he meant. However her eyes went down to his bandaged hand. She thought it was a time to ask him about it.

"What happened to your hand?"

Prem took a small glance down at his hand as he lightly shrugged his shoulders - trying to mask the incident as if it didn't really matter.

"I caught my hand in a door at work," he lied.

He was avoiding her gaze where Mukti already knew that he was lying. Before she had a chance to ask, she heard the doorbell ring.

She knitted her eyebrows in confusion.

"I've called someone who can change the lock." He paused. "To make it more secure."

She nodded as he left to answer the door. She decided to get up and head toward the bathroom to take a shower so she could freshen up. Once getting inside, she took a small glance at herself at the mirror.

Thank god, the damage isn't that much.'
She thought to herself as she closed the bathroom door.

After a small while the lock was already changed. Prem entered her bedroom where he heard the shower run.

He looked down at his watch and decided to leave, taking the keys with him as he locked the front door after him.

Half an hour later, Mukti came out with already dried hair falling loosely around her shoulders. She made it inside the living room where she saw the table was decorated with breakfast. She was pleasant surprised by the sight in front of her.

Everything was there - Fresh bread, pastries, fruits and juice.

She didn't know what to say. She wasn't expecting this much for him.

She tore her eyes away from the table and to him, who was standing near the hallway.

"I went down to get you something to eat." He said not knowing how she felt with the gesture.

"There are a few things in the fridge as well."

Prem's eyes lingered at her longer than he had intended. He took a step back.

"I should probably go."

Mukti wanted to stop him and tell him to stay for breakfast with her. There were no way she could eat all this all by herself.

She would be lying if she said that was the only reason of why she wanted him to stay.

Prem went to the front door and placed the keys on one of the top shelves before exiting from the apartment door.

All in while she stood and watched him leave. She didn't say anything to stop him. Why? Why didn't she say anything to him? He deserved that much after staying with her the night.

She took a deep breath as she ran a hand through her damped hair as she settled down on the chair. She couldn't help but feel touched by his choice and gesture he had done for her.

Maybe, I should have spoken to him?'
She thought to herself.

Prem came out from the tall building and got inside his car. He closed his eyes, trying to collect all the wild emotions he was feeling at the moment. He gripped into the steering wheel as his knuckles became white.

He released it and shook his head.

"Life" he breathed out and started the engine of the car and drove off.

Chapter 10:

*******

Prem entered the Bajaj House hoping he wouldn't meet any of his family members. But he wasn't lucky in that matter.

"Prem."

He heard his mother speak from behind. He took a small breathe and turned around where he saw the concerned look on her face.

"Thank god, you're home, I've tried to call several times, but you never picked up."

"I know, sorry about that. I'm really tired, Maa. I'm just going to lay down a bit, alright. I'll answer your questions later."

Prerna considered his words as he did look worn out. She couldn't help but nod as he went up to his room.

Prem woke up during late in the evening and ate dinner by himself. He went up to his room to get his car keys and made his way toward the front door.

Rishabh Bajaj was silently watching him coming down the stairs as wore a concerned look on his face.

"Prem, are you going somewhere?"

The son stopped by the front door and turned around to face his father. "Yeah, there are a few things I need to take care of."

He didn't feel like staying home at the moment.

"You just got home." The father explained.

"You were gone all night without informing us. Your mom was worried."

Rishabh Bajaj paused. "Son, we're worried about you."

Prem shook his head, "don't be, I'm fine. There are just a few things I need to take care of. I'll be home in a few hours."

Prem stopped a few minutes.

"I'm not going to go all evil on you again, dad. That chapter is closed for good now." He couldn't help but joke.

"You know that's not what I meant" he scolded.

"Anyway, I'll be home in a short while."

The father nodded as he decided to give him some space.

"Don't worry, Daddy-Cool. I'm fine, really!"

The senior man smiled lightly upon hearing the old nickname his son had invented for him. Despite seeing the smile on his son's face, he knew something else was going on behind the expression.

He decided to leave it that for now.

-----

Half an hour, a figure stood on the beach with his hands inside the pockets of his pants.

Prem needed fresh air. There were so many things running around in his head. He found it hard to figure out what to think or what to do.

He stood taking a deep breath as he watched the waves ahead of him. His ears picked the calm sound of the air around him.

Pictures of Mukti flashed before his eyes. She was everywhere wherever he looked.

Shamaa ko pighalne kaa armaan kyun hai
Patangeko jalne kaa aramaan kyun hai
Esi shauk kaa imtihaan zindagi hai

He couldn't help but ask the question which was pleading him the most. Was it possible for him to find peace?

Get what he wanted the most in his life?

Mohabbat jise baksh de zindagaani
Nahi maut par khatm usaki kahaani

Was it really the end?

Was it all over? Did he blow the chance he had? Did he really have a chance at all? He swallowed by the thought of not having her in his life.

Kaise jiyaa jaaye
Ishq bin
Kaise jiyaa jaaye, ishq bin

Prem let out a frustrated yell as his knees fell flat down on the cold hard ground. The feeling of being defeated filled his veins. He felt pathetic. He felt alone. He felt broken.

Nahi koi insaan mohabbat se khaali
Har ek rooh pyaasi har ek dil savaani
Mohabbat jahaan hai wahaa zindagi hai
Mohabbat naa ho to kahaa zindagi hai

He raised his gaze and starred into the still night.

Was it really true what people said about him? That he was empty of emotions? That he was empty of love? Didn't he know the value of the word?

The truth was that he did! He knew every emotion which was running through his body - The change which was happening inside of him.

He wanted to protect her.

He had the sudden urge to make her his.

To mark her.

To let everyone know that she was his and he was hers.

Tose naina lage mili roshani,
Tose mann jo laga mili zindagi

Prem ran a hand through his hair and closed his eyes for a minute. He opened them again and stared into the still night, witnessing the waves moving back and forth.

All he could do was hope. Hoping for the fact that the waves had washed away the pained feeling he felt.

-----

The following day, Mukti went to work like she used to. She finishing the important meetings she had to attend and handed in the projects.

Throughout the day, she had caught Prem taking a few glances at her as if she hadn't done the same as well.

There was an unspoken bond between them which had formed on the night he had stayed with her. She knew there no use of running away from the truth.

The clock passed 5 in the evening and most of the employees were leaving work to go home. Among these were Mukti, who was standing inside the elevator with none other than Prem.

Awkward silence filled the air.

The elevator dinged and the doors opened. Before they could separate in different directions, Mukti lingered her eyes on him debating heavily if she should ask him what she was thinking.

"Prem can you give me a ride home?"

This caused him to look up in surprise but he quickly regained his senses and nodded at her.

They both walked to the car where they sat inside and drove out from the parking lot. After been driving in silence and thanking god that he hadn't turned on his heavy music in the car, she turned her attention on the road.

"Can we, uh.. drive further down the road? I know a really good place where they offer cold drinks?"

Prem almost had a heart attack by her words and almost lost the grip of the steering wheel.

She was talking.

She was asking them to go to a place.

Did the word end? Is the earth shaking?

Nevertheless he gripped tightly into the steering wheel and controlled his excitement and expectations. He lightly cleared his throat.

"Uh, sure."

He parked the car right outside the caf she was talking about. He recognized the place but it had been a while for him to come here.

They came inside and found a table near the window to sit at. A few minutes later, he looked at her asking what she wanted to drink.

"I'll just have water with lemon."

He starred at her as if something deadly was wrong with her. He raised an eyebrow at her, "I've just burned the gas of the car by driving all the way here and you want water?"

"Its water with lemon," she reminded him.

"...Which you can easily make at home without any problem."

She rolled her eyes lightly, "Okay, fine. I'll have a juice of strawberry, banana and apple."

"That's more like it."

Mukti reached out for her bag in order to search for her wallet, but Prem had already stood up.

"Wait" she called after him.

"Remember what I said about being a gentleman?" he said just before leaving to stand at the counter.

She shook her head, placing the wallet inside her bag again. She found herself staring at him for the first time. Without being disturbed or taking small glances and peeks. He was only standing a few feet away from her.

His dark grey blazer was neatly placed on the chair beside her.

He wore a black shirt which fitted him well on his well build body. She realized that he had been working out since she last saw him years ago.

The top buttons of his shirt were undone, giving a peek at his well smoothed chest. She would be lying if her eyes hadn't ever wandered there at occasional times.

Her eyes went to his facial expression he wore. A small smile escaped his lips once meeting up with the worker.

She noticed the firm cheekbones and the light stubble he was sporting lately.

Dare she say what she was thinking?

Dare she say that she found him handsome, more mature in an away - if that was even possible?

She tore her gaze away from him once he made it toward her.

He sat down as they waited for their order to arrive. "I'm surprised that you remember this place?"

"I remember. Some things in life are not hard to forget."

He nodded not knowing if there was a double meaning to it or not.

A moment later they both got their orders.

She took a sip from her own drink as she starred at the choice of his. "Coke, really?"

Here he was telling her to order something else than the water.

He simply shrugged his shoulders as he took a sip. "I just wanted to see if my opinion had an influence on you."

He studied her for a long while and already knew why they had come to the caf at the first place.

"Prem..."

"What did you think, Mukti?" He interrupted her.

"Did you really think that once you're back everything would be the same? I'm a changed person and it's..." He paused lightly.

"And it's all because of you. No matter how much I've denied in the past but it's the truth."

She couldn't help but feel touched by his words. She had to give him a chance. That's what had kept her awake all night, thinking about what decision she should take.

"First of all, are you done with interrupting me because it's rather annoying?" She said.

Prem couldn't help but smirk and muttered a small apology.

"You better be!" she said.

Mukti took a sip from her drink as silence fell between them both.

She raised her gaze to meet his. She knew she shouldn't stare into his brown eyes, because it was her weakness but he was probably already aware of that.

"What makes you so sure that we won't be in the same situation like before?"

Had she been thinking about giving him a shot? Giving them both a try?

"We won't!" he said assuring her the best way he could. But it only made her quieter.

"You know," he leaned back into his chair.

"Men usually take a lot more time to realize the value of their loved ones. It'll take weeks, months or even years. Where else a woman can already settle a whole future with someone with just one glance."

It was true. Women were far more ahead of this matter than men.

"I've finally gotten to know the value, Mukti and I'm not going to let this opportunity pass me. Not this."

She was beginning to believe him. She saw truth in his eyes.

"It won't be easy."

"It never is," he responded back.

They finished the conversation at that and turned their attention back on their drinks. One hour later they decided to leave to get home.

They were driving back to Mukti's house, where he parked the car right in front of the tall building.

She opened the car door while he was watching her at the corner of his eye. He gripped into the gear of the car.

"I meant what I said." Prem told her.

She caught the look he wore.

"I meant it too."

She responded to him just before she closed the door after her.

He watched her get inside the building, and turning around giving him a faint smile.

Hope arose within him by her gesture. - Maybe it wasn't the end for him after all.
