Chapter 3
Flashback
"Dadaji!" The girl called out!
"Betiya! Oh Betiya. I am here." the old man called out. He saw an 17 year old girl coming to him. She wasn't the same as she was when he first met her. She wasn't the most pretty now, but she was his little sweetheart." Glimpses of her fear, her tears, her lost-ness came back to him. She gave him one of their bear-hugs- when she was small she used to try to hug him the tightest. His eyes started to water, and upon seeing that, she shook her head and smiled.
"Are Dadaji, you need to make up your mind. You either be happy when I leave and sad when I come or you become sad when I leave and happy when I come. What is this," she said wiping off the tears off his cheek, "the sarpanchji that everyone idols, that everyone is afraid of, is actually crying. He frowned and took off his turban. To her, His greyed hairs were few now, old age started taking a toll on him,the wrinkly edges on his face creased when he did.
She continued in her mocking child voice, "Chutki and the rest of the others, didn't come to meet you because they're afraid of your sternness. But if you were going to cry, then I should have told them you were a teddy bear." She laughed and he still frowned.
"Oye. Just because I don't say anything to you when you make fun of me, doesn't mean I won't scare the others. I am strict because I am the Sarpanch for them, but for you... I am your Dada, right? If you don't come to visit me, then I will obviously be upset. Bol. Why'd you come to meet me now? What makes you remember me after all this time?" He questioned as if he was the child now.
"Dadaji, I understand. And no, I have been meaning to come for the longest time. I was coming today. But I got late because I just now heard of these city people. I just thought that those people would be another thing to ask you about." She justified herself.
"Oh them! Their teacher came to me the other day. " He came into his Sarpanch mode. "By the way, what have you done to your face? You can do your eyebrows now. Why don't you? It doesn't look good."
"Dadaji! I know I can get them done. I actually look better at other times. But why do I need to get them done if I am here with you? I would've got them done, but now just to irritate you, I won't do them until they're gone. Ha! Wait, Dada, teacher? You mean, these people are college kids?"
"Oh god. What do I do with you? But, yes, they are! I don't want you messing around with them! Poor them, if they ever face you, it will be their nightmare" he joked!
Ha! This is going to be fun. College kids. I will find out where and who they are from.
But his expressions turned serious as he said, "I don't want to hide anything from you. But he is the same one twelve years back. I told him straight up not to mess around with the villagers. I will not tolerate the brainwashing... I told him I don't want to make the same mistakes again. You were too small then. I don't know if you remember those people, do you?"
"Dadaji. I won't ever forget 12 year back. But, the exact people you're talking about, I don't know and I don't want to remember it."
Not giving much emphasis on what was said, she continued, "Anyways. Dadaji. I need you to do me a huge favor. You can't tell these college kids about me. Just consider it's for me. Please, please, please! I need everyone in the village to know that they can't tell my secret to these people. And I need you to tell them that! Get your messengers to tell every single living soul. Dadaji, I can't answer your questions right now, but once they leave I will tell you why! I promise! PROMISE!"
And with that, she left.
Present
Coming from sarpanchji's house, the girl started towards the cottage. On the way, she saw a boy. She could see that he wasn't from the village and saw the frustration in his temperament. Kakaji was about to tell him something, but right before that she thought of a plan and called out with an extra thick village accent.
(Switch perspective.)
"ARREY SAAHIBJI!" A person from a distance called interrupting the Randhir and the villager.
Randhir, annoyed now with all the disturbances, looked over where the voice came from and looked disgusted. He saw a girl, tall, but was disturbingly not good looking.
The girl ran toward them, and the villager surprising beamed at seeing her, "Arre Betiya! You? When did you come? Gudiya bhi na, she didn't even tell me that you're here. Kitna dino-"
Randhir stood there. God, what is this? I am surprised someone can be so happy seeing some girl like this. She is hairy, but I guess she isn't that ugly. BUT Sahibji? Really?
"KAKAJI! AAP BHI NA. You just say any nonsense. You didn't know? Uh...HA. HA. Uhm, yeh kaun hai?" the girl cut the uncle before he could reveal everything. She forgot that the messengers probably left after she did, and probably hadn't told everyone yet. She felt relieved when she changed the subject by asking him who the college boy was.
"I am Randhir. I need to know where I can stay. I have a group with me." Randhir began, he was tired by now. He just spent six hours with Sanyukta in a bus and ... god. If as if that wasn't enough, now they have to look for a place to stay.
"Sahibji, you have came to the right person. Don't worry, I will take care of it. First, introduce me to your group. Besides, where are you all from?"
"Thanks, but who are you? We are from FITE college."
The girl paused for a minute. Her mind went blank until she realized that she still hadn't answered him. "Who am I? Main hoon ek GAO(village) ki chokhi, kya hai na, mujhe na, ek shok hai padhai(study) karne ka, paar MEIN PAANCHVI PAAS PAIL hoon."
"Pail nahi hota. Fail." Randhir shook his head.
"Haan haan, vahi toh mein kehrahi hoon, PAIIL!"
"Ahh. Fail. Let it go. I mean, what's your name?"
"OH. Mera naam? Haanji, Sahibji, sorryji. Voh kya hain na, main ek paanchvi paas pail hoon na, toh issiliye mein sabkuch thoda der se samajh jhati hoon. Maru naam che Khushi."
"Huh? You keep on going back and forth from Punjabi, to two or three words in English, to now Gujurati? Can you speak in one language? It's hard to keep up." Randhir now agitated with this Khushi.
"Oh Sahibji, sorryji, (in hindi) the thing is that my grandparents were both Punjabi and Gujurati, and I wanted to learn a little English. So when I was younger, I really didn't know a lot of words. So I had learnt a little of all four languages and fill in whatever I don't know. Sorry Sahibji, but I don't know all the words in a whole language, so I have to switch back and forth. But don't worry. You all will get used to it!"
"Par betiya tumh-," The uncle began. Before he could continue again, he was called by one of the messengers which made him leave. Khushi gave a sigh of relief.
"Okay, okay. Stop calling me Sahibji. I don't like it."
Randhir was now feeling uncomfortable with the name Khushi started calling him. It made him feel superior to them, which he always liked in the past, but this time, it made him feel ashamed. He had no intentions of belittling the villagers.
"Sahibji, how can I? Na, ji, na. I can't do that. We villagers are nothing compared to you city people. I can only call you Sahibji." Khushi said. Although she was mimicking the mentality of the urban people, Randhir didn't see that.
"God, you girls. Whatever, now show us where to live."
And with that, Khushi walked with Randhir to Khala's house. Khala's house is usually where all guests went because her house was the biggest to accommodate people. But when they reached there, Khala had said other people were already there. Without disclosing who, Khala apologized and told Randhir to find another place. Now Randhir, whose rage was at the top of the line, had to think of another place to stay.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Aap na, sit here. I will think of another way." Deep down, Khushi knew that she could keep them in her cottage. She was surprised of how God even played his game into making them stay with her. She felt bad for the great fun that those kids were going to face.
Meanwhile, what has happened with Sanyukta.
After Randhir and Sanyukta's fight of seeing who will find the place first, Sanyukta stood stumped. She didn't know where to stay. She had asked a couple of villagers who didn't want to help. She had the feeling that those villagers had a bad past with outsiders.
About twenty minutes later, she saw a group of kids and thought of an idea.
"Baachalok!" Sanyukta called in a sweet voice.
Immediately, the kids looked over and recalled that those were the city people that came. And then, they remembered what their Didi said. Nonetheless, they went over to her.
"Baacha kisne bola." The second oldest, a boy of 12 years, came over to her with an attitude. Kaustuki and Yoyo, who were behind Sanyukta, were shocked at the audacity of this small boy.
"Yeh lo ji, baacha bolta hai ke baacha kaun hai, dekho Kaustukiji!" Yoyo exclaimed as he was baffled by the child.
"Oye. Hum koi baacha-vaacha nahi hai. I don't know why were talking to these bogus people. Chalo." The boy began to leave until Sanyukta caught him and pleaded, "Oye. Please don't leave. See, we're from FITE college and we have a task here. But before we do our work, we need a place to stay. Can you please... please help us? And I am sorry, I shouldn't have called you guys baachalok. Forgive me and please help us find a place to stay."
The boy saw the sincerity and the longing for a place to stay in Sanyukta's eyes and gave in to help the group. The first thing that he thought of was to ask his Didi, but he thought she was at Sarpanchji's and nobody wanted to go there. After a while of brainstorming, he and his friends thought of taking them to Khala's. However, when they went, the kids saw a boy and their Didi sitting together talking.
"OYE! What are you doing here? Go! GO AWAY!" The boy rushed to the boy.
"Hey, no! He's a part of our group." Sanyukta said as fast as she could before the boy could touch Randhir. "The main culprit is her. Actually, who is this girl?"
Khushi looked up and saw Chote. Chote, from a young age, had always been possessive of her, and she smiled. Beside their kid gang, there was a group of college kids. Must be the other group.
Khushi got up.
"Oye, Madamji! Mein hoon Khushi. I am no culprit. I was actually thinking of where he and you all could stay." Khushi glared at the kids before they said anything.
"Haan, toh. What are you doing here with him?" Sanyukta asked, not liking the closeness in which Randhir and that Khushi girl was sitting in. What a hypocrite. He tells everyone that he doesn't like girls... 'HE HATES GIRLS'. But look now, how close he's with her. I mean look at her. She isn't even the best looking girl.
"Hey. Don't tell her anything. And you, Farzi, you have to ask these kids to help you. Atleast, she might have more brains than you!" Randhir defended Khushi. Secretly, Randhir liked the possessive Sanyukta. The anger in her eyes was evident to him, but he couldn't let that get to him. He had to continue their regular fight and arguments. They, then, went into a series of nok-jhok.
Laagta hai...yeh dono pehle se ek dusre se nafrat karte hain. Mera job aasan hua. Khushi smiled on the inside until her thoughts were interrupted by...
