Janmashtami TS: Will he or wont he?
Translation for Part 2
28.08.13,8:30 am,poolside..
When Khushi came to the poolside,she found Arnav standing alone by the pool,deeply lost in thoughts.
The waves of the pool were reflecting on the sharp contours of his face.
Khushi lifted her saree slightly above her ankles & frowned.
Khushi(thinks): I'm wearing my anklets.Then y didnt Arnavji turn around?
She kept her hand on his shoulder and called loudly.
Khushi: Arnavji..
Arnav was momentarily startled.
When he turned around,he found his wife frowning at him.
Arnav: What happened?
Khushi: a.. Mohanji is here. So.. we're.. leaving.
Arnav: Okay. All the best! I'm sure u'll do well!
Khushi(faint smile): Thanks! Listen..
Arnav: Hmm?
Khushi: I've kept the fruits on the dinning table & the orange juice is in the fridge. Hav ur breakfast after Aarav wakes up.
Arnav(shocked): Aarav is sleeping till now?
Khushi: Yes.
Arnav(quirks his eyebrows): Strange!
Khushi: Dont wake him up. Let him sleep. His tests got over yesterday so now he deserves to take rest!
Arnav nods in agreement.
Khushi: And listen, Nanheji has gone to meet a friend. When he comes back,tell him that he,naniji & Aarav need to be at the open ground behind Lakshminagar by 6 pm.
Arnav: But ur program will start at 6:30,right?
Khushi: Ya,but if they dont come by 6,they wont get to sir in front. And watching the program from behind wont b fun.
Arnav: Fine. I'll tell him.
Khushi: Almost all the preparations r done for the Janmashtami pooja. U only need to bring the pooja items from the market & give them to Hari Prakashji. And.. hav ur food & take ur medicine on time.
Before Arnav could even nod..
Khushi: And yes! U need to remind naniji that today onwards,apart from the yellow pill,she has to take the green pill as well.
Arnav(frowns): Which green pill?
Khushi: The one that Dr.sa'ab has prescribed this time.(holds her head) I cant place its name..
Arnav: Not a problem! I'll check it out. Now stop worrying about the house & listen to me.
Khushi: Ya,tell me..
Arnav: Keep ur phone next to u. If u dont answer my call,u've had it!
Khushi: Alright,alright! I will tie my phone to my pallu! Okay?
It was only after Khushi said the above line that Arnav's gaze fell on her saree.
Arnav: Y did u wear a saaree today?
Khushi: Since its a festival I thought wearing a saaree would b appropriate.
There was a minute of awkward silence between them.
Khushi: So.. should I.. leave?
Arnav: Wait! I havent finished yet. I know u'll b very busy with the preparations & practice,but dont forget to have ur meals. U didnt eat much last night. Today u've kept a fast. On top of that,u have to dance! So if u dont hav anything,u'll feel weak.
Khushi: I understand..
Arnav: Did u hav breakfast?
Khushi: No,I've taken it a tiffin. I'll hav it once my dance practice is over. Now I'll hav to leave or else I'll get late.
She turned & was about to leave when Arnav called her back.
Arnav: Khushi..
Khushi(turns around): Yes?
Arnav(pats her cheek): Take care.
Khushi felt herself tearing up.
Khushi(in a small voice): U too..
Arnav: And..
Paayal(calls loudly): Khushi...!
Khushi(turning towards the door): Coming jiji...!
She wipes her tears before heading out of the room.

15 minutes later..
Arnav recieves a text message from Khushi which reads: Apart from urself,u need to take care of ur son. Just ignore the fact that u dont like milk. Today the responsibility of getting Aarav to finish his milk is urs! No matter how many excuses he makes or how long he takes,dont let him leave his chair until he finishes the entire glass of milk! And dont even think of doing ramanchi(cheating) with me! If I come to know that u've gone on his side & he has skipped having milk,u both will b in trouble!Arnav's lips curved into a smile as he read & re-read the text.

NK was more shocked & less surprised when Arnav entered his room.
NK: Hey Nannav,mere bhai! What brought to u my mamraa, I mean,my room?
Arnav(through gritted teeth): Its not mamraa its kamraa!
NK(holds his ear): Sorry,sorry! So ya,what brings u here?
Arnav(admits): I need ur help..
NK: For what?
Arnav thrusts a pendrive into his palm.
Arnav: U need to prepare a dance on this song in 2 hours.
NK(confused): Dance?And that too in 2 hours?!
Arnav(nods): I'll wait for u in the car at sharp 4 pm. If u're late,u wont get ur costume! (points to his clothes)And then u'll hav to wear this,track pants & T-shirt for ur dance. So dont b late!
He is about to leave the room when NK stops him.
NK: Hello!? Oye Nannav! R u asking for a favour or r u giving orders to me?
Arnav(without turning around): Whatever u like!
NK: What if I refuse to help u?
Arnav(turns around): In that case,u will responsible for Khushi's tears!
NK(frowns): tears? But why?
He runs after Arnav who had already left the room by that time.
NK: Hey Nannav! Wait!
Arnav stops,turns around & glares at him.
Arnav: Now what?
NK(concerned): Is Khushiji having some problem?
Arnav: Ya,but she does not want to share her problem with anybody. I want to help her outta the problem & for that I need ur help. Is it clear now?
NK: Yeah! Dont worry Nannav! (shows thumbs up) I'm with u!
Arnav: Thanks!

Later that day,6:10 pm,Gupta House...
Khushi(wearing her earring): U carry on,jiji. I'll come there once I'm through.
Paayal: No Khushi. I'll wait here. There's nobody at home. How can I leave u alone?
Khushi: Come on jiji! I'm not a kid that u cant leave me alone! I'll come there pretty soon. Meanwhile,u go & reserve seats in the front row for all of us.
She slides the necklace down her head & pulls the tussel.
Khushi: And anyways,its been a while since jeejaji called u.(wearing nose ring) By now he must've dropped those clients to their hotel. He must b on his way. The rest of the family will b here soon. So if niether of us goes there to welcome them,it wont look proper. And then we'll get buaji's scolding as well!
Paayal: Okay,I'll leave now. The lock & key r on the dinning table. Try to come as soon as possible.
Khushi(wearing hip belt): I just hav to wear my bangles & apply altaa on my hands. I'll b there the moment the altaa dries up!
Paayal: And what about ur gajraa(flowers worn in the hair)?
Khushi(realizes): Oh yes! I completely forgot about th gajraa! Thanks for reminding me! I'll go & take it out of the fridge now!
She goes towards the kitchen & Paayal follows her.
Paayal: Take it easy. Chachaji that r dance might start at around 7:30. We still hav a lot of time at hand. Even if u forget to take something,there'll b enough time to come home & take it.
Khushi(unwrapping the gajraa): Thats true,jiji,but I want to watch Krishna leela & Raas. Thats y I need to hurry up. Now u leave or else jeejaji will reach before u do!
Paayal: Okay. Come & close the door.
Khushi: U close it before leaving. I dont need to bolt it since I will b leaving soon anyways.
Paayal nodded & left.

10 minutes later..
Khushi(thinks): The program will start soon. Let me apply altaa to my palms. Its more important for it to dry up first. (opens the cork)Then I'll apply it to the back of my hands. (tilts the bottle of altaa) That can take as much time to dry as it wants to!
She soaked the cotton swab with altaa and had barely started applying it on her fingertips when she felt a breeze.
A soothing breeze which gently played with the stray locks of her hair.
She was suddenly aware of the rate at which her heart was beating.
Khushi(looks around): Ar.. navji..?
She got up & peered outside from the window.
Khushi(thinks): There's nobody out here. Then y did I feel like that?..
She dismissed her wayward thoughts as she came back to the bed.
Khushi(thinks): May b bcoz I'm missing him?.. Anyways! I shouldnt waste time. Jiji must b waiting for me.

The bell rang the moment Khushi finished applying altaa on her left palm.
Khushi(loudly): The door is open,amma..! Come inside..!
Aarav: Its me,mom...!
Khushi(smiles): Aarav? Come to the bedroom,beta...!
The door opened & in walked Aarav & NK.
Khushi(smiles): Nanheji,how's ur friend now?
NK: He's fine,Khushiji. How r u?
Khushi(frowns): Me? I'm absolutely fine!
NK: Is there a.. problem?
Khushi(wide smile): No! Y would I hav a problem? Everything's fine with me! Where's naniji?
NK: She's with aunty & buaji.
Khushi: And what about jijaji?
NK: Aakash bhai is also with them.
Khushi: Great! a.. Aarav,beta.. where's ur dad?
Aarav: He's in the office.
Khushi: Oh! Is it?
Khushi didnt know why she felt disappointed,when she herself had asked Arnav to stay away from the function.
Aarav: He's sent something for u.
Khushi(eager): What is it? Show me..
Aarav took out a steel tiffin box from the paperbag in his hand & showed it to her.
Khushi: Since I'm having altaa on my hands,u'll hav to open this for me.
Aarav opened the box & showed it to her.
Khushi(surprised): Sabudaana paapad?
Aarav: There's one more thing..
He took out the other tiffin from the bag after placing the steel tiffin on the bed.
Khushi: U'll hav to open this as well,beta.
The second tiffin contained tiny rasgullas.
Aarav: He told me to make sure that u have these.
Khushi: I'll hav these later. Right now I need to apply altaa on my hands. U both carry on. Enjoy the program!
Aarav: No mom. I want to stay here.. I'm not interested in the program. It'll b very boring.
Khushi: U must not say that,Aarav! Go & hav a look. U'll b told Lord Krishna's story through drama,devotional songs & dances! I'm sure u'll enjoy!
NK: She's right,Aarav. Lets go.
Aarav: But chachu..
NK: In case u dont like it,we'll come back. Is that okay?
Aarav(reluctantly): Yeah.Okay.

Khushi felt the breeze for the second time minutes after Aarav & NK left for the function.
This time it was stronger.
And her heartbeats were louder. And faster.
She was sure he was around!
Khushi(looking around): Arnavji,u're here. Arent u?
No response.
She came out of her room while looking for him.
Khushi: I know that u're here. But u're hiding since I'd asked u not to come for the function. Isnt it?
Still,no response.
She checked the kitchen,the living room,the backyard,the verandaah but they all were empty.
Khushi(irritated): Where r u? Come to me!
When she did not get a response this time as well,she gave up & went to her room.
Khushi(sitting on the bed): Dont come! U love irritating me,dont u?
Arnav: I cant deny! Yes,I do love irritating u!
Khushi turned around to find Arnav in front of her.
Not wanting to give away her true feelings,she continued her act of pretense.
Khushi: From where hav u come?
Arnav: From the office!
Khushi: From where did u come inside?
Arnav: From outside!
Khushi(irritated): From the door or window?
Arnav(points to the window): Window. When u were looking for me in the other rooms,I was waiting for u over here.
Khushi: Y did u come? I made u swear on myself & yet u came here?
Arnav: I think u're mistaken. I'm not here to attend ur program. I'm here only to see my brother's dance.
Khushi(shocked): Brother's dance? Jijaji is also going to dance or what?
Arnav: I'm not talking about Aakash.
Khushi(confused): Then who?
Arnav: NK!
Khushi: Oh wow! U dont like it when he refers to u as his brother. And today u urself r referring to him as ur brother?! How come?
Arnav: Desperate times call for desparate measures,u see!
Khushi: Very bad! U're so wicked!
Arnav: Who knows it better than u?
Khushi(agrees): True! BTW,what happened to Nanheji? I mean y did he suddenly think of dancing for this function,that too so late?
Arnav: He's the best man to answer these questions.
He pulled the wooden chair & sat down on it.
Khushi: Yeah,I know. I'll ask him once I meet him. For now,will u plz tell me y u're dressed to perfection?
She checked out his outfit from top to bottom,appreciating it inwardly.

Arnav: I'm the daamaad! So I need to b well groomed & dressed to perfection!
Khushi(sarcastically): U're absolutely right!
Arnav(stands up): Stop the useless talk & come here..
He opened his arms wide & waited.
Khushi: I cant. (raises both her palms)Or else ur white clothes will turn pink!
Arnav: In that case..
He unbuttoned the waistcoat & threw it on the table.
Khushi: What r u doing?
Arnav(unbuttoning his kurta): What do u think I'm doin?
Very soon the kurta found its place on the table.
Khushi: U will ruin ur well ironed clothes.
Arnav(tossing his vest on the table): I dont care! (opens his arms)Is it okay now? Or do I need to do something else?
Khushi shook her head as she approached him.
Arnav pulled her closer by her waist & crushed her to himself.
Khushi wrapped her arms around his back,unmindful of smudging the altaa.
Arnav(kisses her hair): I missed u!
Khushi(tearing up): I missed u so.. much!
Arnav(breaks the hug): Y didnt u tell me about it? U hav no idea how I've spent the day! From the time I saw tears in ur eyes this morning,I've been so disturbed.

Khushi does not reply to his question.
Arnav looks at the bed to find the open tiffin boxes.
Arnav: U didnt even hav the food that I'd sent with Aarav. Great!
Khushi: How could I eat it? My hands r..
She gasps upon seeing her palms.
Khushi: Hey Devi Maiyya! The altaa is ruined!
Arnav: Its okay. People r coming to watch ur dance,not ur altaa! Come now..
He made her sit on the bed before sitting beside her.
Then he popped 1 rasgulla into her mouth.
Khushi(after having it): Thanks! (points to the steel tiffin) Hav some papad..
Arnav: No,thanks! (feeds her)U have it. I know u must not hav had lunch properly bcoz u were both,tensed & excited.
Khushi: U're talking as if u'd finished everything that was cooked for lunch! I know u too well! U must've convinced naniji to take her medicine & Aarav to finish his glass of milk .(gets up from the bed) But when it came to feeding on ur ownself,not more than 4 morsels of food must've gone down ur throat!
Arnav: Where r u going?
Khushi: Hav patience! I'll tell u after coming back.

Khushi returned with a bowl & spoon in less than a minute.
Arnav: Now what's that?
Khushi: Sabudaana khichdi. Have this.. (feeds him) U'll worry about everyone except urself! U'll take care of all the family members but will ignore ur ownself!
Arnav(swallows): Thats what u do as well! U dont want to hurt the people of Lakshminagar, niether do u want to hurt ur jiji. And u certainly dont want to hurt Arnavji! But what about ur own self & ur feelings?
Khushi lowers her gaze.
Arnav(feeds her):U wanted me to appreciate ur saree this morning but u never asked me about it! Similarly,u wanted me to come here & watch u dance but then u made me swear on urself! How stupid is that!
Khushi(enraged): Dont call me stupid! (feeds him)I care about ur sentiments! Thats y I made u to swear on myself! Devi Maiyya knows that whenever I heard that song,u were the only person I thought about! Every single line reminded me of u! No matter whose name is there in the song,whenever I would pretend to sing the lyrics,I had only 1 image in my mind-it was urs!
Arnav: Y didnt u say all this earlier?
Khushi: Didnt u tell me that u wont b able to tolerate the dance? So I thought since u wont b coming for the dance,what was the point in telling u about it?
Arnav(sighs): Look Khushi,I appreciate the fact that u care so much about feelings. And also that u think so much about me.But I dont like it 1 bit when u sacrifice ur wishes for my sake! Thats exactly what u did this time! (feeds her)Everyone else's feelings matter to u,excepting ur own feelings!
Khushi: Yes,they do matter to me! Thats how I am & thats how I want to b!
Arnav(shrugs): As u wish!
He gets up from the bed & walks out of the room.
Khushi(gets up): Now,where r u going?
Arnav: Relax! I'm only going to wash my hands.
Khushi(sighs): This lard governer is too much!
She looks at the smudged altaa & sighs.
Khushi: May b if I wash my hands repeatedly with soap,I'll b able to get rid of this mess.. But if I do that,the altaa on the back of my hands will also get washed away. And then I'll have to apply it all over again. I dont hav that much of time. Now I'll hav to make do with this,the way it is.
She stood in front of the mirror & checked herself.
Arnav(entering the room): U're looking good!
Khushi(dryly): Thanks! Hurry up. Everyone must b waiting for us.
Arnav: U carry on. I'll wait here.
Khushi(shocked): What?
Arnav: Yup! NK will text me before his dance starts. I'll b there shortly after I recieve his text.
Khushi: That means.. despite being present here.. u.. u wont watch my dance?
Arnav: How can I watch ur dance,Khushi? I swore on u! Remember? Now I cant go against it.
Khushi: Let it b! I know how much u believe in all of this! (shakes her head)At times u cross the limits!
Arnav: Look who's talking!?
Khushi: I dont want to talk to u!
Arnav: But I wanna talk to u! I mean I wanna say something-all the best!
Khushi: Thank u so very much!
She storms out of the room leaving Arnav smirking behind her back.
